MEL Return Helsinki, Finland via BA (Finnair)/Qantas (w' 2 stopovers in Japan) $950 (Oct/Nov) @ IWTF

680

Hi all,

Here's a bargain price to Helsinki, Finland in October/November 2017. Play around with the dates, but an example is 25/10 - 15/11:

  1. Melbourne (Qantas) to Tokyo, Japan
  2. Stopover for 14.5hrs in Tokyo
  3. Tokyo, Japan (British Airways) to Helsinki, Finland
  4. Helsinki Finland (British Airways) to Tokyo, Japan
  5. Stopover for 9hrs in Tokyo
  6. Tokyo, Japan to Melbourne (Qantas)

Weather in Helsinki is ~3 degrees, so pretty damn cold at this time of year
Plenty of things to do in Helsinki

A few things can be done in Tokyo too
Around 20 degrees in Japan at this time

Hope this helps someone out there.

  • Nice, that's half of what I paid for my trip at end of Aug. I'm flying with Qantas/Finnair via Singaport with a 5 hours stop both way, so I guess total travel time is a lot less.

Nice find, although I'm hoping to travel to Helsinki in February. I heard it's better to see the northern lights then, as December is pretty miserable - from what I've heard.

    • Correct though it's only a three hour flight to Reykjavik in Iceland so there's that option too for cheap as well.

I've been to both cities and they are fantastic. If one hasn't been before then they should go

      • Reykjavik Is where Santa is right? That's definitely on the list

        • Get on his list and save an airfare. Leave a carrot out for the reindeer though…

Lapland is where supposed North Pole santa home is but that is in northern Finland. That's on my bucket list too.

Reykjavik is nice and quiet, think Hobart. But you do see northern lights , snow etc. the real highlight is when you go out on tours to other parts of Iceland and see glaciers, geysers, underground ice cavern etc. the scenery is just so lush and the air so clean.

Ok so I miss it terribly i will just shut up now.

No, Santa is in Rovaniemi, Finland.

        • @dm01: Yes, the one and only: http://www.santaclausvillage.info/ About 800km north from Helsinki. There's most likely not any snow in Rovaniemi yet in October, probably not in November either. It's actually just really dark, wet, cold and miserable then most likely. Length of the day is less than 6 hours in mid-November https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/finland/rovaniemi?month=11&y… If you want to experience proper winter, go around Feb-March. On the other hand, if 24 hours of sunlight is your thing, go in June or July.

@adrianhughes1998: You're not alone - I've been to Iceland twice - both times in the winter - and it's my favourite part of the world I've seen so far. I'd like to get there in the summer some time as well, but in the winter time…it's serene, and so quiet once you leave the city. And the first time seeing the aurora….oh wow, just incredible!! Yes, I miss it very much as well. Planning to get there again next year…hopefully…

@dm01: Santa is in Lapland, depending on who you ask & whether they're from (Norway/Sweden/Finland) as to which's Country's part he lives in ;-)

        • +1

@dm01: I've only been the once and in July in summer just lots of rain and then sun then rain. Like Melbourne where the weather changes every few hours.

My favourite part of the world for sure too. Haven't seen aurora yet so Need to get back for that.

@jakentta: went in July few years back and sun only goes down around midnight but never completely goes down. About 3am the sun is bang on the horizon and then comes up again hahha.

Very surreal walking in park at midnight and seeing people walk their dogs. Absolutely loved it

Surreal in winter too… We woke up at 7am, showered, had a leisurely breakfast, strolled down to Senate Square steps and still was able to watch the sunrise!

@kiitos: that's epic. Love the username too - thankyou in Finnish!

        • It is not recommend to go and try to see the Northern Lights in December?

    • I had a quick look but couldn't find anything decent for Feb. Did you have any luck?

  • no love for brisbane. absolutely no deals from brisbane for ages

      • +7

what are you talking about? I live in Brisbane and 3 weeks ago I thought about putting on a light jumper. it almost got down to single digit temperatures here!!!

        • bloody climate change! No wonder you're digging up coal, you'll need it to warm the state soon.

if you change the departure city and keep the dates he provided the best price is only an extra $95 with Finnair, Cathay Pacific, Qantas

      • +1

I'd rather Tokyo than Hong Kong but saying that, I would like a lot more time to visit in Tokyo. Don't get me wrong, Hong Kong is fantastic as well. Ah and Cathay Pacific is a better airline..

Oh dam, just forget what I just typed :-)

  • Great

  • +3

Can I extend my time in Tokyo?
    Using stopover
    No jokes pls…

    • +6

Why don't you try and tell us?

Oh and why did the chicken cross the road?

  • Flightcentre won't beat Cheapoair as they don't have an ABN

  • Booked this route less than 48hrs ago :'(

  • The Tokyo/Helsinki flights are operated by Finnair, not BA.

$100 more can get you additional stopovers in Singapore and Hong Kong: https://imgur.com/a/TgpYf

  • Flight Centre WILL not price match this fare because it includes stopovers with departures that are not ex-Australia and/or arrivals into Australia.

Like Harvey Norman's price promise, Flight Centre's best price guarantee isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Finnair… NEVER again. Flew them once, lady across the aisle had a baby, asked for a bassinet, was handed one… couldn't connect it in the wall as it wasn't made for it. Stewardess said: Just put it in the aisle.

    • +9

Asked for a bassinet?! Holy sh*t - most people would ask for a doctor!!!

Tokyo-Helsinki is fine, probably their most profitable routes. Food and beverages are from Japan, so is half the cabin crew. Well this was 10 years ago but I thought that was one of the best flights I've been on.

    • They're definitely on the poorer side of customer service standards. I've flown Singapore-Helsinki return with them and they made the Jetstar flight from Melbourne to Singapore look 5 star. I would say slightly above United but not by much.

For $950 I'd probably still fly them though!
