Your best Deal on a suit?

What's the best deal you guys have had buying a suit in Australia? Despite all the bargains for travelling to Asian countries I still think the money would be better spent locally, LOL.

I live in Sydney, and looking for a few suits for work.

The $35 wool suit clearance from Target 18 months ago. Excellent price and very good quality (even from target)

    • How was the fit?

      • Excellent fit

    • I agree I got a couple from that deal, great quality and surprised how well they fit.

LOL, if only I worked in a florest, then I could blend in and get away with not doing any work. Unfortunately I need to blend in with the dull and grey corporate world instead, to achieve the same result.

MJ Bale. If you are buying multiple - use your haggling skills.. they are desperate salesmen and will discount for a sale.
Suits are decent quality, have been wearing 3 on rotation for about a year now.

Recently bought 3 shirts there too.. I chose 3 I liked, the guys said the best he can do is $240. I said 'make it $200 and I'll grab them today'.. 'ok, done'. haha I should have said 180!

Sorry, I know I havn't specifically mentioned a 'deal', but worth a shot.

    • Can get custom fitted (built to measure) shirts for about that price online, surely a better fit? I bought a stack from pickashirt ($70-$90) and the quality and fit (and customization options) hit the mark

      • $200 / 3 = $66.. plus the fit from MJB is perfect on me. Would rather buy in person to be honest. and CBF measuring myself up and potentially risking getting it wrong. plus i like to touch and see the fabric and pattern that i'm buying.

Invest in 2 to 3 decent suits - i.e. from MJ Bale, Boss (if you can afford the DFO prices), Politix, etc. I'd probably say the best bet is MJ Bale when they are running specials - last one I saw was 2 suits for 1500 AUD with shirts included. Not a bad deal - considering the fabric is good and I've seen most suits take a decent battering (commutes, running around, etc.) from fellow colleagues.

I'd stay away from Tarocash - not sold on the quality of the fabrics really.

There are some Sydney CBD stores - I've forgotten their names - but have had some reasonable suits for sale - in the range of AUD 300 to 400 per suit.

One thing I'd say is that budget for alterations, inseams, shoulders, back, etc - a good suit fitting will feel like a second skin on you.

TLDR: MJ Bale - good suits, decent prices (when sales in force). Check out Brooks Brothers, Boss (if you want to feel fancy). Politix as the last resort. Stay away from Tarocash.

  • Despite all the bargains for travelling to Asian countries I still think the money would be better spent locally, LOL.

In Asia, sometimes it takes one or two or three tries before you find the right tailor. Once you do find the right place, it's definitely worth it from there.

A quick email or two and a few suits get shipped over for about $200 each.

It is especially worth it if you're like me and suits off-the-rack just don't fit right. If I was to buy a suit off the rack at get it all altered and fitted to shape, it'll probably cost me more than $200 just for the alterations alone!

  • Avoid crappy artificial material I.e. polyester

  • NZ is pretty much local so I would recommend https://www.hallensteins.com/

They have a spin to win at the moment where you can get a significant discount. I have bought a few suits from them, the merino suits are really nice.

    • some of the quality from Hallensteins is like taro cash.
ok if you get a nice fit but it will be suit churn - which is ok if you get it for the right price.

  • Mine was on Zegna fabric suits from Moss Bros.
I ended up with three suits for around $1200 with cashrewards.

I have a tailor from Asia who comes to Australia once / twice a year.

  • I bought one from this deal, still haven't had a reason to wear it yet.

  • Hey mate,

I just posted this on another topic:

Check out Institchu, they do custom suits at a reasonable price. Price varies with cut and fabric.

Personally I've ordered 3 suits from them and think they are much better value than off the shelf. Also, on their home page they have a range of deals, its always worthwhile trying to catch a deal with a second pair of pants.

I'm a funny fit, and have never really got a great off the shelf fit. I used to get my suits from TM Lewin (similar to MJ Bale), they sometimes do the 2 suits for $1000 deal.

I think quality in a suit is important, particularly in the Australian summer - the lighter the fabric the more breathable it will be. Ive found that sometimes the cheaper suits don't breathe real well.

Good luck with your suit hunt!

    • Roughly what did you pay per suit via institchu do you know? Didn't think they were that good a price last time I looked into them compared to other custom fit options

      • The last one I got was $580, they had a promotion where if you bought a suit with 2 pairs of pants, you got a 3rd pair of pants free. So $580 for a tailored navy coloured suit with 3 pairs of pants.

I ordered, just the other day, a formal suit (black with silk lapel) for a wedding I have soon. That was $420.

  • $99 Hugo Boss jacket when they appear at the outlet.

  • $6 Hugo Boss jacket/suit still with tags and mint condition, at a local Good Sammy store.
