First Mower for Small Backyard Recommendations

Good morning Ozfam

I recently moved into a small apartment with a gross dirt backyard
I planted grass seeds because why not, and they've actually grown.

I need a mower for this backyard approximately 15m x 5m. I've never bought a mower before and I'm not really sure what I need to look out for
What about things like:
- electric vs petrol?
- whipper snipper or mower
- is my budget of $100 even realistic?

We are moving in 6 months to a house. We don't know how big the backyard there will be so future proofing is something I need to keep in mind

Are these mechanical push mowers worth looking at?
This ozito is in our budget but I don't know if it will be even half decent

If i were to blow out my budget to $300 what would you recommend?

Any help or recommendations would be awesome

Cheers

  • Hi,

15mx5m seems a bit large area. I would buy second hand 4 stroke victa on gumtree for $100 or honda to $300.

Just bought second hand Victa and it was much better than the ozito electric. You may be able to sell it for the same price when you want to updgrade your mower 6 months later. So win win for me.

Got a sthil whipper sniper and tried that to cut the small council strips with very thick and durable grass. Didn't work well VS a mower. So it is a no for me. They are good to trim but not designed to mow. Thus the mower.

The ozito electric was very weak and slow and don't forget the cable.

    Happy hunting

  • 15x5 is a decent size. Too big for a mechanical push mower I think, and they're rubbish anyway.

If you really want to spend as little as possible you could keep an eye out for a petrol mower at hard rubbish time. Lots of mowers get put out that might only need a good service to get them running well.

Otherwise if you can spend the $300 you should get something half decent new.

    • this, I always pick up mowers during hard rubbish. 80% of the time they just need a new spark plug, fresh fuel and some oil.

  • +3

Get the Ozito electric - no worries about petrol or oil. You'll need to get an extension cord. It's got a 3 year replacement warranty for peace of mind.

You'll just need to manage the cable - keep it to one side of you (and obviously don't run over it); you'll get the hang of it in no time.

If you don't let the grass grow too long, the Ozito should have all the power you need.

Are you likely to move in towards the CBD or out?

If in, there will be only small backyards; out an the backyards will be bigger. That could help guide your decision.

    15m x 5m

I'm not sure why the other two comments think this is a biggish area. In my suburb, this is around the size of the council strip! So it's all relative.

    • 75 square metres is massive for a unit.

      • 5 square metres is massive for some units.

Electric will be fine, bloke I know used a battery powered (12v lead acid) one for years.

Those Flymo-style ones work ok as well.

    • is my budget of $100 even realistic?

      = push mower

depends on grass type, users fitness

    • I'd suggest a push mower on this size. Its a decent workout and saves going to the gym. Just make sure that you learn how to sharpen the blade. Too many people give up, but the reason they find it hard is because they let the lawn get out of hand or are using a blunt blade.

  • hand push mow for you good ones. excersising more muslce and slim diet

  • Have the ozito 1400w mower for 2.5years now. Doing just fine almost same size small lawn.

  • Watch this op.

Honestly though it's winter, in the 6 months you'll mow it like 3 times? Pay a neighbour $10 to do it or the local yobbo for $20 each time lol. Use free 10 mins for a beer.

  • For $100, you can buy a decent shaver.

  • Second hand electric plus and extension cord. Mow across and back, away from the power point. If your next house needs more sell it for what you've laid and buy what you need. I used an electric for a while for a much bigger yard and it was fine, but the cord was a pain. Gone battery now and it works well, but costs a lot more than equivalent in electric or petrol.

  • whatever you do , do not buy the cheap online edisons mowers . we just went trough 8 weeks of pain with them .

  • we bought the masport for $400 from hardly normal as we bought a new fridge at the same time.

we owned the masters 909 100cc mower for 4 years and died with out a service or oil change in that time $150

i was going to go for this

would of been fine for a few years

  • If you decide to go petrol ALDI usually have a 4-stroke petrol mower in Sep/Oct. Last year it was only $139.

    • Did you buy one and was it any good?
