Whats Your Industry Secret/ Loophole That Gets You Perks?

Hi guys

I am in the aviation industry and I travel a lot
I know a really good trick/secret/loophole which gets me priority boarding, immigration express lane and bunch of other things usually devoted for first class and business class passengers only or people with silver/gold memberships with their relevant airline.

I am too scared to share the secret as it will mean airlines/airport staff will find out eventually since everyone will try to use it and then it wont be there for me anymore.

However, as a sweetener I can share my other secret.
So 4 years ago Subway email me an offer which was buy any 600ml drink and get any 6 inch sub for free - it was a mobile offer, but the loophole is it has no expiry date.
So I can confirm I have been eating $3.80 6-inch Sub and Drink for past few years. And it tastes amazing after a good sat night out.

Few years ago, I was leaving a job, and the HR guy was furious with me. Till today, I do not understand why he was complaining of the paperworks he had to do for me and now I was leaving after 3 months only. The upper management was okay, they understood and we are in a very good relationship that exists even today.

Out of all the heated conversations, they forgot to take my ID card back, which I could then gracefully use on their stores that are their subsidiaries and get staff discount. Certainly not very ethical, but every time I do so, I remember the rude guy there, chuckle, and remind myself why everyone needs to take their job professionally, not personally.

I think this guy is just using ozbargain to brag about how good he thinks he is

    This guys last post

    Hi Guys,
Have contemplated posting this many times - but have seen few posts recently of people seeking the Internets opinion on their financial lifestyle
I am trying to seek your opinion on how I should go about with my moneys

    Age - 25 (Partner 26)
    Occupation - Engineer (same)
Salary - $100k After all taxes ($105k before taxes)
    Savings - $105k YTD ($150k)
    Emergency - $27k ($2k)
    Shares - $20k ($0k)
    Everyday Floating - $5k ($5k)

    I don't have a house, I have a simple car worth $10k maybe takes me from A to B
I am frugal as f**k and try to save every dollar I can

Heres my last two months spent - https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/68522/48709/personal_b…

What I want to do is retire early - maybe by 45-50
how can I do this ? buy an investment property ? buy 2 ? so lost
I also want a nice car and mrs wants a house. Can I achieve all 3 things? (House, Nice Car, 2 x investment properties?)
Does any of this mean anything ? Because at the end we are all gonna be ded anyway. Man I am so confused.

    And now this post

I know a really good trick/secret/loophole which gets me priority boarding,

Priority boarding sucks. Any frequent flyer knows it's best to be the last one on plane. Why spend more time in a confined space than you have to.

      immigration express lane

Really depends where you're travelling to. It's irrelevant at airport with electronic immigration gates. It's irrelevant if you're eligible to join the 'locals' line.

Apart from that, you just have to read the situation:
      - Join the line for locals and play dumb if you get you get caught.
      - Sneak into the express line when no one is watching
      - Chat up someone with an express pass and tailgate them
      - Chat up an air hostess and get her to give you an express pass

For infrequent flyers, I doubt the 20 min saving in the immigration line is making a difference to their lives. For frequent flyers, you should have a legitimate way to fast track your way through and airport.

      The OP is a tool.

      • +1

the trick with priority boarding is to use the priority boarding lane. they don't actually make you line up in the other lane if you aren't suppose to be there

        • +2

Yeah, I never do this, but heaps of inconsiderate people use that line when they shouldn't all the time.

        • @serpserpserp:

agreed, it devalues the benefits of being gold/platinum

        • Ymmv. Seen people domestically and OS being told to go and wait…

      • +4

You get on the plane first so you can stack all your carry on baggages which totals about 40KGs in the overhead lockers while the people who get on last cry in the aisles about not having anywhere to put their massive bags that should have been checked-in in the first place.

I wonder if he's an investment banker at Westpac?

      • Exactly what I was thinking. Haven't we heard this BS before?
Wonder if he washes his own car?

    • +6

This thread in my opinion is fishy and is either an attempt to fantasise about his own existence or an attempt to make the front page of ozbargain.

      Additionally:

The OP pays 5k tax on an salary of $105k?

That seems worth a mention in his original post on industry loopholes or at least a mention as a career benefit.

Therefore, I'm not buying his fertiliser.

That stated there is one scenario in which his entire story is believable as such let's give OP a chance to explain his situation.

OP if you read this post please state:
      Job Title/Position:
      Reason for the tax brake:

      I.e

      Job title: Senior Systems architect.
Reason for tax brake: Own the Business.

      • +2

No he earns $100k after tax. His partner earns $105k before tax

        • +1

Still it's hard to believe that an engineer would be on $150k at the age of 25.

So I'm even doubting the fact that he is engineer. Although, I'm fair and thus I'll give him a way to verify his claim:

          Please answer the following questions:

          Y' + Y = 2x.

          3x + 2y + 2z = 4.

          x + 6z = 4.

          4x + 6y = 4.

          Y'' + 2Y' + 3Y = sin(x).

          Sin(pi/2) = ?.

          Everyone else:
Please allow the original poster to answer these questions. However, if someone would like the answers please Pm me and I'll give them to you.

        • +1

          @Fortuna21:

you could have easily done any of those questions above with lateral thinking of high school maths.
(going to assume the middle 3 are one question, to solve for x,y,z)

I'm not in a STEM uni course right now, and I just did those questions for fun (albeit probably not as eloquently as I'd expect from an engineer)

Damn it's been a long time since I've touched maths. Almost miss it…

        • -6

          @lux:

Please have a bit of common sense before posting.

The question themselves are not supposed to be difficult, although those without a good compression of maths would find them to be difficult (OP).

There is also one question asked above that no amount of lateral thinking can solve. Therefore, one of your answers is likely to be wrong.

If you still believe that each question can be solved through lateral thinking, PM me.

I'll be glad to correct your mistake/mistakes.

        • @Fortuna21:

Fine, I'll also replace the X, Y, Z question above.

          Solve for X, Y, A, Z.

          9x + 5z = 11
          3x + y + 7z = 5
          12x + 4y + 5a = 22

Impossible to solve by lateral thinking.

We now have two questions which can not be solved by lateral thinking.

        • @Fortuna21:

You seem desperate for a reply / for someone to agree with you. Whilst there is some truth to what you're saying, your condescending tone is really unwarranted.
So what if an engineer is earning 150k at 25 years old? I feel like this statement irks you, perhaps hit a raw spot for you? Not going to make any further assumptions.

Look, I didn't realise the y" + 2y' + 3y = sin(x) question, but second order differential questions were included in the HSC Extension 2 / 4u syllabus prior to 2000. I make no apologies for saying that lateral thinking with high school maths, makes all these question solvable. You can easily translate knowledge of homogenous equations into non-homogenous equations.

Just because you seem so eager for my reply, to absolve any doubt in your mind that I can solve this (as a non-STEM background), y = yp (particular) + yc (complementary). Particular equation, sum the two particular answers (i.e. real components) to form the "y" answer from Im(z). For the complementary, let equate co-efficients with acox and bsinx to get a solution for a, b, and thus yc.

Don't know where you're heading at with your reply; 3 equations, 4 variables. Unless you want it in terms of 'a'.

By the way, I didn't neg you. Feel free to confirm with a mod, or what have you.
@mods, feel free to delete if this is off-topic - my apologies.

        • +1

          @lux:

"So what if an engineer is earning 150k at 25 years old? I feel like this statement irks you, perhaps hit a raw spot for you?"

          I'll keep this short.

          OP made three claims:
          1st: Employed as an Engineer.
2nd: Works in the Aviation field.
          3rd: Travels for work.

There is only one type of engineer who and might consider their field as aviation.

These engineers are unlikely to state themselves as working in the aviation field, or do theybtravel for work or even work in Australia.

Furthermore, OP has claimed to have insider information acquired by travelling for work but mysterious will not share this loophole.

This is uncharacteristic for an engineer as they cannot help but show loopholes in society.

          Case example:

There was an engineer who found a reoccurring pattern in the lottery syndicate and instead of being rich he told the newspapers.

So the reason I'm raw is either the OP is lying about being an engineer or is expecting to get something in return for nothing.

Furthermore, people that lie about being qualified in my opinion are disrespectful to those who have earned their position like Engineers and to a lesser extent other professionals.

Regardless, why would the OP lie?

Is he embarrassed? or ashamed of his situation?

People need to stop worrying if they qualified or unqualified, because in reality the gap between professionals and non-professionals is closer in Australia than people realise.

          Case in point:

Both my brothers earn significantly more than my father (lawyer) and none of my brothers are qualified.

Words of wisdom from my father:

"University is for getting a higher education and not in hopes of earning an unachievable salary".

So is asking for a little truth so much to ask for?

Also note that a high salary is not my goal in life.

In fact I'm self employed while earning my third degree, after which I'll attempt my forth, fifth, sixth and so on.

          y" + 2y' + 3y = sin(x)

          "Look, I didn't realise the y" + 2y' + 3y = sin(x).

""lateral thinking with high school maths, makes all these question solvable."

Depends on what you call high school maths. Regardless, without an advanced high school maths background these questions would require research:

          y" + 2y' + 3y = sin(x)

          9x + 5z = 11
          3x + y + 7z = 5
          12x + 4y + 5a = 22

          First question:

That might be correct, assuming your answer is reached by I and contains Exp.

          Second question:

"Don't know where you're heading at with your reply; 3 equations, 4 variables. Unless you want it in terms of 'a'."

Yes, in terms of A is fine.

Also I believed that you implied in your first post that by just lateral thinking these questions could be solved.

"By the way, I didn't neg you. Feel free to confirm with a mod, or what have you."

Why would I care? I'm only interested in the claims made by the OP.

So neg me all you want it's a free country.

This means you are allowed to disagree with me, which is not surprising as I'm an ass***, and return I'm allowed to disagree with you.

"to absolve any doubt in your mind that I can solve this (as a non-STEM background)"

On the record I never stated you could not solve them. Instead if you tried solving them lateral you'd only get the partial answer for the de.

Honestly, I disagree with your implied stance that a majority of people are able to answer these questions.

          Especially, seeing how a major
of the general public are math illiterate and even find general mathematics hard.

Also remember, it's not you I'm trying to catch out but the OP.

Regardless, it's absolutely wonderful to see people enjoying maths.

          Note:
I was also going to ask some series questions but for obvious reasons was unable too.

Moving back to the topic student discounts are fantastic, and there are methods to register online for free and not enroll in classes thus free discounts.

          Quick google search should help.

    Insurance.

Insurance companies aren't allowed to offer deals to existing customers because it's discrimination.

This is why you always see awesome deals for NEW customers, but nothing if you're an existing customer.

CHANGE your insurance. CHANGE it often. New customers get great deals. Existing customers get jack sheet cos it's the law.

Insurance companies aren't allowed to offer deals to existing customers because it's discrimination.

Huh? Who told you that? Did they tell you pigs fly and unicorns are real too?

That's gotta be the funniest thing I've read in a long time. I agree new customers get a better price, but the reason old customers don't get good deals is, because that's how insurance companies make money.

    • +1

Insurance companies aren't allowed to offer deals to existing customers because it's discrimination.

Offering discounts to new customers would technically be discrimination also if the reverse was true. Which it's not.

What's the big deal of priority boarding. The person who sits and waits patiently and boards last, spends the least amount of time in the fart cabin , therefor is the winner in my eyes

    • +5

the advantage is having your belongings above you in the storage instead of the other side, 5 seats back

I guess the whole 10 minute of shuffling in a queue is a little annoying too

I'm happy to be last on, I always pay for an up front seat in domestic flights.

      • the advantage is having your belongings above you in the storage instead of the other side, 5 seats back

I haven't had this problem in a long time and always board last. Airlines have gotten pretty good about enforcing the cabin baggage limit.

If you travel light how do you know Qantas enforce cabin baggage limit? I never see them do it even on the busiest routes.

        • @serpserpserp:

Just seen people gate checking bags and haven't experienced overhead storage above my seat being full.

      • Had this tonight, bag was stored 4 rows back and no one would allow me to go back to get my bag for a good 10 minutes.

        Priority boarding is everything

Your airline industry secret is the APEC card.

Not sure if it's changed recently, but how many airports have to actually seen an APEC card line at immigration? I've only seen them in Singapore and Hong Kong … and I've never had to queue up at immigration in those countries anyway, because they're incredibly efficient. I haven't see any US airports (the one APEC country, where immigration lines are ridiculously long) with an APEC card line.

I understand that there's other benefits to having a APEC travel card, but jumping the airport immigration line seems to be of limited use.

Not to mention that, even if you manage to jump the immigration line, you'll still have to wait for your baggage if you have an economy class ticket … might as well wait in the immigration line.

    • I use to have one. Travel through SE Asia like a boss. Even out of Australia you could use the embassy line. Great card, unfortunately expired now.

I wonder if one of the loan criteria is your performance appraisal for get a loan? Otherwise all the dud employees would just get huge mortgages (which are low margin for the bank) and slack off. The bank would probably be hesitant to make you redundant, because then you'll just default on your mortgage.

Jeez everyone is holding their cards close to their chests.

A whole range of random fees waived such as:
No monthly account keeping fees on transaction accounts
No annual fee on all credit card, including the $500/year types
    The various home loan fees
Discounted interest on all loan types and credit cards
    Discount brokerage for share trading
$1000 worth of shares a year if the bank performs well
Various discounts on insurance products etc. - doesn't mean it's the cheapest though

    • +1

We qualify for those staff discounts with one of the big 4 yet we still have cards and our home loan with others cos they still beat it after discount lol

      • +1

I found that too. Discount rate for staff at a big 4 bank wasn't great. So I went in and negotiated at the internal staff branch. I told them the rate I was targeting on my mortgage and asked them what LVRs were the best priced.

Then structured my LVR accordingly by tacking on an unused line of credit. Got a pretty good rate in the end.

  • Well, I 'may' get a $400-500 gadgets/toys for free like once a year, I can get $50-100 device for free like every month, and yeah those fidgets and stuff (which costs around $5-10), I can get those for free anytime I want. But being honest I hardly take stuff (just did once) for free; I don't just feel comfortable. For anyone thinking what I do, I am an expert loop hole hunter.

i used to work for a huge hotel chain. we used to get 50%-80% off on hotel rooms depending on the season. I travelled through Europe with friends and paid 20e a night in 5* hotels! i miss that discount so much

    • Is that because you split the room with 2-3 other people?

20e @ 80% discount = 100e full price for the room … Must've been an eastern European country at that price.

      • +1

That was for 1 room with 1 person. With breakfast included. Occasionally it would go up to 60e depending on the hotel. at one point we were in a hotel in Paris that had the standard room rate on the back of the door as 600 euro a night!
