I have two of these in my home - for checking in to make sure my dogs haven't done anything stupid. The setup process is a bit strange when you first try it - especially since it talks to you - but only in Mandarin. One day I'll get around to setting up a recorder, at the moment they function as security cameras, but they won't help if the thief steals the camera.

    • How long do these record for?

      • +2

They record onto a microsd card in the camera hence his comment about not helping when if the unit is stolen.

You can also setup motion activation, and that records and uploads a 15 second clip to the cloud somewhere, and you access it via their app.

      • Depends on the size of the SD card, my one has 32GB card and records around 8 days

        • Yes. There are also different quality settings, I tend to leave mine on low because I just use them for basic surveillance. They do rolling recording, so when the card is full they will delete the oldest recordings to make space.

I found that mine will record for about a week to ten days on a 32GB card.

        • @macrocephalic:

Is it possible to access the recordings remotely, via an app or web interface?

I.e., you are away from home, fire up the app to find your dogs not inside. Could you then view video footage from 60 minutes before?

        • +1

@Marty131: Yes, you can access the all the past recording via the Mi APP

        • +1

@Marty131: By default, the camera records to the SD card. You can use the Mi Home app to view the camera, and you can rewind back, and also view previous days. All this is stored on the SD card. You can set it to record to the Xiaomi Cloud servers as well, but I haven't tried (also, half the interface is in Mandarin).

        • @macrocephalic: Thanks and thanks @mahasona:

I bought an Edimax IP Camera (for much more), and this functionality is missing.

    • +1

Is there a reason why you haven't tried the cloud storage option? I'm thinking of buying two, and set and forget at entry points to my house. If its stored onto a SD card the theif will just take the camera.

      • To get the camera to work, I had to set the app to Mainland China (not sure if they've fixed that issue yet), so half the interface is in mandarin. I mostly bought the cameras to check in on my dogs, I'm hoping that any thief who breaks into my house is to stupid to take the camera.

  • Hey Op - is the processing time for these really 2 to 3 days? It's been close to two weeks and I am still waiting for my order to be shipped from this deal!. That item is also listed as 2 to 3 days processing time and I have previously contacted customer support.

    • Hi, normally, processing time is 2- 3 days. Would you pls tell me your order number for last deal? I'll follow up for you.

      • Hi Rep,
Why can't we place order for more at this price?
We have to place for 1 pc & wait till you give more code next time. Why?

        • Hi, you can place several items (5 at most) in one order and just apply the coupon "20170724xiaomiaus" and you can get all of them at the same discounted price.

        • @zapals: Thanks. Worked. Placed 2nd order.

    • +1

Yeah I have had to wait on a few orders more than a week and still no confirmation of the item being shipped.

When I email them, magically the item just got shipped.

Zapals, some feedback, fix your dispatch notification as we, your customers should not be waiting over 1 week before our orders are shipped. This is one area you can and should definitely improve on.

Other than that, Zapals has some good stuff at good prices.

      • Hi Dear, thanks for your valuable suggestions. Normally, the processing time is 2 - 3 business days. We will take it as valuable feedback to improve dispatching speed and make customers happy with zapals. Thank you so much for your support for zapals.

        • Hi,
I have received my cameras but the power adapter sent will not suit for australia. Could you plz send me the right one for aus?

          Thanks

  • I still haven’t got mine from the last deal and the zapals reply to the PayPal dispute has been lacking at best

    • I'm still waiting for my one from the previous deal ( 08/07/2017 ) but giving them 28 days to deliver. Hopefully arrives this week as I'm eager to try it.

  • Coupon doesnt work

    • Same here :(
Tried in both USD and AUD

      • +2

hi, need to log in your account to apply the coupon "20170724xiaomiaus".

        • Thank you! It worked! :)

        • The most secured coupon i've ever seen

  • I received mine promptly from the last deal and I love it. Great little unit to help monitor my front door.

I do wish it came with an AU plug though.

  • coupon worked for me when I reduced it to qty=1

    • I ordered 1.

  • Hi Op - is the code still working or am I too late?

    • +2

hi yuhannl, it sill works. Just log in your account to apply the coupon, then it's the discounted price.

      • Yep, it's working! Thanks.

  • I mainly want to use these to monitor the wife, but when we're away it'd be good to be alerted if there is any break in.

Does the camera send an alert and snapshot when motion is detected?

    • Yes, you get alerted on your phone and it will record a 15sec snapshot of the movement which you can download to your phone.

    • +10

monitor the wife? Concerned the mailman is delivering more than just mail are we?

      • +9

This sounds like a chicken or egg scenario…..Need to camera to watch the mailman but need the mailman to bring the camera.

      • +3

I doubt the camera will capture anything, it's probably Express Post.

      • The milkman always knocks twice.

      • Santa will come down the chimney

  • +3

Last time this item sell for less than $22 with worst currency than now.

I think OP can do a better deal on it, at least for $21.5 to have it equal.

  • Has anyone used this as baby monitor?

    • +1

Yep we use it as a baby monitor, works well - setup is a little weird but once done it works well on iOS and Android Apps

Picture quality is good and you can pinch to enlarge if you want a closer image

      • Thank you

    • +2

Yep, I use it as a baby monitor. The LEDs are a little bit on the bright side for my liking, but I stuck a bit of tape on the rear status LED. My bub definitely noticed the red IR LEDs at first and did that creepy stare-at-the-camera-omg-the-baby-knows-I'm-watching thing for the first few days.

Since I didn't like the idea of constantimages of bubby going off to China and my wife wanted a bit of privacy while feeding, I used Fanghacks to disable cloud access, as well as a few other things to restrict access to within my network.

      • Thanks

      • to you think the hack is hard to follow?

        • It's easy if you just download the image file and flash that to the SD card (I used a free program 'Etcher' to do that). Then just start the camera, wait for it to boot, and then insert the sd card. Done.

        • @Jangle:

          Thanks i will try

        • +1

The hack itself is pretty easy to install as Jangle mentions, but there are a few quirks about it I needed to work around when disabling cloud and restricting it to my network. By default MiHome manages the camera's wifi network access. You can configure Fanghack to do this, but it has some limitations you need to be aware of.

          • Firstly it doesn't let you have spaces in your SSID name, which might not be a problem for you.
          • Secondly it doesn't allow for WPA2, only WPA.

Other quirks - like they say in the instructions, when you're expanding the partition size in the web interface and leave it alone. It can take quite a while to finish. Also when you're first configuring it, sometimes the services don't boot up - just manually start them the first time and they should work again all subsequent times. They've been basically set and forget since then.

Also, the USB cables (for power) that mine came with were pretty long. I want shorter ones, but the socket is set deep in the camera, so none of my spare cables fit. One day I'll get around to buying new shorter cables…. maybe….

        • @HYG:

Thank you for sharing how you did it, I hope when I try this weekend, it work out fine.

        • @HYG:

but the socket is set deep in the camera, so none of my spare cables fit.

Yeah that's the annoying thing! I've yet to find a spare cable to fit it. so I'm wondering if I'll be able to buy one that does fit when the cable that comes with it eventually dies. I actually want to extend the cable for mine as the camera's location is far from the outlet.

  • Whats with the long coupon code??

    • +5

      Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V…

Would this be okay behind a clear glass window? Thinking of setting one up to monitor the driveway.

    • +1

Night vision wont work through glass, it will reflect the light back onto itself and look a mess. During the day it would be fine however.

      • Have this camera and there's an option to turn off the night vision which will make it better for behind glass (note its a weird chinese menu)

    • Shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: see above, except for night vision.

    • That's exactly what I use it for. I've stuck small tape across the glass that just covers a part of the road so I can avoid alerts every time a car drives past.

  • I paid in USD and when converted via (28 degrees) credit card exchange rate I was charged $21.40

    • Really strange exchange rate. It should be US$16.94 after using the coupon. Could you pls pm your order number?

      • Everything is fine. :)
I mean that I was charged AU$21.40 onto my credit card because I chose to pay US$16.94.
The exchange rate is a bit better with my credit card than paying by AUD.

        • ok. Got it:)

  • +2

as long as you dont mind this thing constantly sending your data to the chinese servers, then I guess its ok

https://github.com/fritz-smh/yi-hack/issues/118 <— loads of good info here

    • I have hikvision NVR at home. Would this camera connect to it after hack?

      • asking as well, can this record to an NVR?

  • Grand total in AUD is $26.05 for me.
Do I need to select USD?

    • +1

Hi, full AUD price is 29.43. After using the discount coupon "20170724xiaomiaus", final price is AU$22.67. If you select USD, the final price will be US$16.94.

  • +1

I previously had a Kogan one of these for a baby monitor. Then I found it hitting my NAS and sending data out. Unless you know what you are doing with a firewall, I'd avoid chinese branded cameras.

    • all Xiaomi products phone home… this camera does even when you're not using it

  • +6

    Good deal +1 from me…

    However I found this..
Listed at $32.95, with ebay discount code COLLECTING it comes down to $26.36
So pay the extra $4 and get it by the end of the week! Me personally i need these now and don't want to wait for shipping from China

got this camera recently from last deal.

Ppl keep mentioning it stores to a cloud, how is this possible? do you need to hack first?

Or is it first recorded onto sd card then you access it?

also does the camera continuously record or can you change to record Only when motion is detected?

    Thanks.

    • +1

I bought this camera in a previous deal. Its OK but its a Chinese camera made for the Chinese market so the app is partly in Chinese (they have been updating the app with more English) and they have disabled the camera so that it only works through the app. Luckily there is some people who have written some scripts/hacks which turn off its app restrictions which enables you to use the camera directly without the app. See this website for more details https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks

      • I've been holding off to buy one as I have the same concern. But once it's hacked(english mode and disable cloud) do you know if I can still connect it to the Xiaomi app?

To my knowledge the iOS app seems alot safer than the Android app as it access fewer phone content?

        • +2

Not at the same time. You can't access the xiaomi app once its hacked but to unhack reboot without the sd card and you have your default camera back. Basically the hack stops you sending all of the video to China.

    • When the camera senses motion is saves a 15sec snapshot onto Xiaomi servers. You can then download it from their servers to your phone.

      • How long does it store the footage on the server? Have you tried setting up a couple on the same account?

I'm just thinking, if someone was breaking a window [where the camera] is pointed at, will 15s be enough to capture the crooks face or will it just capture the glass breaking.

  • Crap. I just purchased this morning on yesterday's deal. Do you think they will cancel?

Do they make these in black?

  • With the code when selecting Quantity of 2 it comes out to be AU$52.10.
    That's AU$26.05 each.
OP, how do we get it for AU$22.67 each when ordering more than one?

    • buy it separately.

    • Yip I had the same issue… I ended up placing multiple orders.. seems a little silly as they will pay double freight and sending more than one together should actually cost them less? Any way just wanted to confirm separate orders does work and you can re-use the same code on your account…

      • +1

Chinese government pays the freight anyway.

  • Got one this time. Thanks OP!

  • Thanks

  • expired?

    • Hi, it' still valid now. Did you log in your account?

  • Expired. "Coupon code "20170724xiaomiaus" is not valid."

    • Coupon still works. Need to log in your account to apply the code:)

      • The Apply coupon button doesn't do anything.

    • Please disregard my previous comment, works after signing up to the site.

  • Never mind, it does work.

It wouldn't work in Firefox, but I switched to Edge, and it accepted the coupon.

No one has mentioned it here yet, but don't forget to claim your free gift. I chose a MicroUSB cable.

  • Does the app still need to be set to Mainland China to work?

    • +1

Yes. Could not get one I helped setup recently to work if I selected USA as the locale.

Also tried changing it to USA (in the settings) once initial setup was complete but the app stopped recognising the camera. Worked fine again once I changed it back.

      • Thanks :)

  • Thanks OP. Bought another 2. That brings my total to 5 now :)

  • Still cannot figure out of the hack is reversible or if you can revert back to stock if you take out the SD card?

    • Apparently it reverts back if you remove the SD card, but why would you want to?
It's a much more useful (and safe) device once hacked.

      • Thanks. I was asking to determine if there was a risk that the camera could be permanently bricked if things were to go wrong.

No danger in trying the hack then if it only sits on the card itself.

        • Well that's not quite the same question. There is certainly a risk that the camera can be bricked if things go wrong. I suggest you read up on what the hack does and how to undo it. I prefixed my first reply with "apparently" to indicate that I'm reporting what I've read, but I've not tested going back to stock myself.

        • @Jangle: What app do you use for for the RTSP stream?
