Cheapest Way to Go to The Movies? (Melbourne)

Hey I'm in Melbourne and wondering what the cheapest way to get a cinema ticket is. Some of the prices are crazy and (compared to the UK at least) even most of the deals and special offers are not cheap.
Thanks

  • How much are you happy to pay?

    • Less than $10 would be good to go regularly!

Reading Cinema has $10 tickets, and $10 drink/popcorn combos.

    • Thanks, none of them very close to the city but with keeping in mind.

  • You can get tickets around $12 from optus/ telstra if youre a member

    • Thanks, will check it out.

    • once you're in that portal you can pay with a giftcard as well.
which is good if you can source cheap giftcards.

If you are a member of RACV you can also buy discounted tickets through them

RACV Hoyts tickets have gone up in price and are more restrictive than before (not after 2 pm on both Saturday and Sunday). I bought a couple of Adult tickets yesterday and was charged just over $30.

  • Are you living here, or on a holiday? If you are living here, and can drive, head out to http://www.waverleycinema.com/

    Sessions start from $6

I used to go there when I was at uni, they had $2 sessions. I clearly remember seeing Shawshank Redemption.

The website doesn't look like it's changed much since then LOL.

How is it inside? Isn't it very dingy looking? I accidentally went in once a few years ago walked straight out. Felt I would get murdered in there.

It's old. The screens are small. I went there multiple times and lived.

Look, it's nothing like Village Cinema if that's what you are used to. You can't expect much for pocket change. I still go there once in a blue moon to see movies I may have missed in the big chains. It kinda feels retro dodgy, as opposed to retro cool LOL.

      • I remember going there with a school holiday program when I was a kid and I was scared of it in the 90s. I doubt much has changed since then.

  • How much are tickets in the UK on average?

    • I paid 9.80 GBP less 2.00 for student discount (obtained by doing a free course to qualify for a NUS card) less 1.00 for a before 5PM session plus 60p for online booking then used Meerkat Movies code (obtained by taking out a one day travel insurance policy through comparethemarket UK) to buy one get one free on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

So…Standard price is 10.40 GBP and discounted price 3.70 GBP each.

      • 10.40 sounds cheap.
I remember it being closer to 14GBP per ticket and 7 discounted.

  • Do you work for a large company? All the banks and larger corporations I've worked at have deals where you can get $10 tickets in books of 5 or 10 tickets through their social clubs. They've recently introduced some stricter conditions on those tickets though so make sure you read before purchasing.

    Found this too:

Maybe I'm just a tight-arse or something, but I can't seem justify in my head the cost of a movie ticket. Usually it's buying two - plus drinks and popcorn. I haven't bought a full price ticket for many years!

    • I used to get a friend of mine who works for Village to get me those books, but now they've switched to these cards that you scratch off after you've used one

      • I've never actually bought a book myself. Does the card restrict it's usage even further?

Wait until the ticket checker goes for a pee break and stroll right in

    • Or sneak in through the fire exit.

Go to a 10am session and just keep moving into a different cinema all day to see new movies… See 4 movies for the price of 1. On a $10 discount ticket that makes them $2.50 or less per movie.

  • Most have cheap days on Mondays or Tuesdays, cheaper during the day as well on those days.

  • Sun theatre in Yarraville is awesome. I believe its $10.50 on a Monday/tuesday and they do reasonably priced beers. If you watch a less popular film then its likely that you'll get a small cinema full of plush sofas and its amazing.

  • Get a senior's concession card for free, then tix are just $10. You only have to be 60+, so you might have to wait a few decades.

  • Whatever you do, if you go to hoyts, don't buy a drink combo. I'd avoided it in the past because it was expensive even then but it's just way over the top now. I noticed they weren't even displaying prices, I was in a hurry so ordered a 2 drink, large popcorn and 2 choctop combo. They wanted $38 for it!

when i ask to see a menu they always tell me it will be faster them to tell me.

      • The funny thing is at hoyts broadmeadows they've got TV screens displaying the combos available for purchase, but the prices you'd expect to see along side the displayed menu items are conspicuously absent. That's pretty dodgy in my opinion. They're relying on people choosing based on desire alone by purposefully hiding the prices, whereas if the prices were displayed then people would be less likely to buy what they actually want. Because the prices are shit

  • At Highpoint the causal dining restaurants near Hoyts do a movie ticket deal for around $10-12 if you buy a meal from them. Can be a cheap date night as I think you can even use these tickets on a Friday and Saturday night after 5pm.

What a timely offer for OP :-)
      Chocs and movie for $9.50!

Went to the local Coles last night and bought 3 boxes with the movie offer shown on them (lots of boxes didn't have the offer).
Then went to the self-checkout and put each box through and paid individually using my Diamond AMEX (3x points) + FlyBuys card.
AMEX didn't like the 3rd box so I switched to my Mastercard (1.25x points) + FlyBuys.
Staff member was looking at me strange…I felt like saying "OzBargain"…but I just left with the booty!

        • Hope you also use Android Pay to get the extra 2pts/$, if you have the offer :-)
But anyhow, already a real bargain. Now is hoping they still have these marked packs left when I go shopping later.

Edit: BTW, Why do you have to pay individually?
Is there a T&C saying 1 claim only, which I missed? To make it easier to claim the tix I suppose? Thanks

@bluesky: I was being paranoid. In the end I went to Coles in Southland and they had heaps. I bought 5 boxes in one transaction and paid using Amex (3pts per $1). I scanned the receipt in once and attached the same receipt to all 5 claims and I got 5 movie tickets.

Now to claim for the other 4 boxes I bought via my daughter.

I've put on 2kg in the past week :( any specials on gym equipment?

        • @backpaqer: Haha, the problem with so much choc goodies. Halloween is not too far off, if you can lock them up :-)
