(So it has been around a while)- headed as TP-Link TL-PA211(KIT) Review

    • +3

The thread reported real world sustained performance ranging from 1 to 4 megabytes per second.

your mileage may vary but this product was an absolute garbage and unreliable.
i wouldn't pay 2 bucks for it. definitely not recommended based on my experience. unexplained drop outs and very poor performance even when it works.
it's currently gathering dust in my drawer for the last 2 years

+1 to this. I have the TP-Link AV500 and experienced decent data transfers but frequent dropouts. They're now sitting unused. Then upgraded to decent Ubiquiti UniFi AP's and have a very reliable network now.

      • +1 for the Ubiquiti stuff. I bought one about 2 yrs ago to replace a TP link, which replaced a DLink, which replaced a crapper DLink etc… In the last 2 years I've only had to hard power cycle it 2-3 times. It's extremely stable and the range is much better than any of the normal dlink consumer stuff.

      • want to sell your unused TP-Link AV500?

      • Same. No issues with PS4 online gaming using the AV500 model :D

(and using it for remote play)

    • +2

I tried some of the higher end TP-Link EOP adapters and they were woeful.

Later purchased an AC router which is much faster and more reliable.

      • pretty much what i did. i went down the eop route after a lot of people bashing effectiveness of wifi extenders. wrong move. after i ditched tp link eop, i just got netgear ac1200 wifi extender and it's been flawless. easy to set up, reliable and hardly any loss in performance

    • My experience with a pair of them over a long time has been different when used in a rural area. Pretty happy with mine these many years. My previous Netcomms were a big problem here.

    • I have the TP-Link AV500 version and never really had any dropouts, in my scenario the modem/router is at the front of the house and i live in at the back of the house so it all depends on the the house and the age of wiring.

      • It also depends on if your whole house is on the same circuit, or if you have a really complicated circuit. I have the AV500 as well, took a very long time to set up the initial connection and had a very low connection speed because my house's circuit is a mess. I did have dropouts from time to time, but they weren't often enough to bother me.

    • +1

I'm running the AV500's on different circuits and they work really well, no dropouts and decent speeds.

Much much much better than my experiences with wireless.

  • none in bankstown

I own the same exact TP-Link product and still use it from house to remote shed over many years replacing a Netcomm NP825 Turbo Homeplug 85Mbps pair (bought 2009-8 from UMart) that degraded over time and got slower and dropped out lots etc. Can't find my TP-Link order (obviously not from U-Mart as in not in the orders) but maybe bought it 3-4 years later? It has worked very well ever since and has never died in spite of the lightning in my rural area, rarely needed to be repowered whatever. I have repowered it from time to time (like once a year) when trying to solve some unrelated issue but have never identified it as the problem.

Mileage may differ as people say but mine has been so good and reliable I will buy some as spares (and for IT support for the various friends I give support/help to) if I can get my hands on them this cheap.

Possibly people that have had some issues are in congested areas (like big cities) that have much interference from other gadgets? There are only so many channels and bandwidth around in sardine land :) As a lifelong IT worker I have moved from Brisbane to the country a few years back so have some idea of the technical differences for gadgets operating effectively in either location.

  • not bad

The 79 are the superior AV500

You can still get the powerline adapters for free if you're with Foxtel. Called up last week and got a pair for my father.

And you get to keep the adapters if you cancel your subscription! I now have 4x netcomm "500mbps" - a pair from a cancelled telstra 3month free trial and another pair from a cancelled foxtel 3month free trial.

      • Not a bad score.

      • damnit never got them when i had free foxtel. should've asked though :/

        • I now use the adapters with my foxtel now subscription + smart tv :) so im not a complete freeloader

  • +2

Just a quick note that while you can mix and match AV200 and AV500 or higher speed products, the whole network will run at the slowest speed. I have used this TP Link adaptors before but they were quite unreliable and disconnected frequently. So YMMV.

  • +2

powerline stability and speed all depends on your home wiring & appliances/gadgets connected on the same circuit.

i get 2MB/s (16mb/s) on adsl2+ internet downloading through powerline and no dropouts.

  • The hunt is on!

  • +2

Tried these out in 2 different houses (< 5 years old so decent cabling) a few years back and found them to be useless. Far too slow for what they're advertised for.

  • I had their higher bandwidth AV500 model for a couple of years until one failed suddenly last year. They have to be on the same electrical circuit otherwise they'll be so slow as to become unusable. Not all electrical outlets in a multi-room house share the same circuit due to power draw and wiring contraints.

    • +1

Not true; mine are on different circuits and speeds are decent.

  • +1

I get 1.4MB/sec via ftp over my LAN with these pieces of poop

  • 70-80mb/s from my powerlines. Using Netgear 200s and TPlink 200s. Much better than wifi as it's stable.

  • Anyone know of any stock in sydney?

  • +1

If anyone is curious, I bought the AV2000 version (149 dollars) around 1 year ago - these are the top of range product.

    My NBN is 100mbit

Using these in a separate room I got 35mbit out of 100mbit.

Im not happy with it but its better then wifi.
