PayPal Forcing Its Exchange Rate Service?

Is it still possible to choose the option to be charged in original currency and not have it converted to AUD and get charged PayPal rubbish exchange rate.. I can no longer find the option on a mobile device.. And since I rarely get internet I often can't use my computer and need to buy things on the run..

So is it just a mobile thing..

It's very annoying that they seem to not offer it.. Before they had the option hidden away but now it seems gone?

It still works for me on Desktop, not sure about mobile.

    It's still there on mobile.
Select the card you want to pay with and then select "View currency conversion options" under the exchange rate. Then select "Convert with card provider".

Yes, it's still available, they have just made the process harder by making you jump through more hoops to get to the option!

They have a convenient habit of "forgetting" your settings and defaulting back to using their conversion rate. I've had to watch it very closely after I got stung recently, though I was able to get them to credit the difference back by kicking up a fuss through their Facebook Messenger support.

    • I believe the default setting is now their own conversion option. I haven't been able to set up PayPal to use my CC conversion rate as the default like it used to let you…

  • It's there but takes more effort to get… also frustrating that it doesn't always save. Either way, need to be careful but worth the savings if you do - it's quite satisfying to see the amount on the 28 degrees online statement vs. the amount PayPal quoted me!

  • I got hit by them in a bit of a different way.

I was buying from Asos in AUD and I have some USD balance from something else I don't want to withdraw because of their crappy exchange rate.
When buying through Asos you don't just pay for an item normally, you open a purchase agreement with Paypal.
According to customer service, transactions like this can't come from anything other than your Paypal balance, whatever currency it is.

Kicked up a stink and got the difference refunded.

  • I have a credit card and a bank account linked to Paypal. However when I go to pay it defaults to the bank account. I can see why they would want this, but is there any way that I can change the default - other than just on a per transaction basis? I only have the bank account linked so that I can withdraw on the rare occasion of refunds/payments. It is annoying having to delete the bank a/c permanently, and then later having to set it again.

There should be a 'change' link that allows you to opt for any of the credit cards you've registered with PayPal, when you click on it the different credit card options appear and you opt for whichever. Maybe the link isn't available on smart phone but it works on a desktop and tablet. One thing for sure is that if there is balance in your Paypal account which you did not transfer out to your bank account, this balance will be used first.

Forgot to mention this is not something you can set by default in PayPal Settings, (to credit card by default), but is available per transaction each time you go to checkout page.

  • okay thanks peeps for the info

  • Have you tried these steps?
My Account -> Profile -> My Money -> My preapproved payments -> Update -> See Available Funding Sources (or Set Available Funding Sources) -> Conversion Options (for card you'd like to change this option)-> Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice -> Submit

Merged from How to Permanently Disable PayPal's Thieving Currency Conversion Rate

Don't know if anyone has posted it but I found it on the Reddit. It was through a secret link I was never able to find in my PayPal profile.

Log into PayPal then click this link. Then click 'conversion options' and select "Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice." However it works for my Mastercard but not AmEx.

  • Yes as said, but it's always worth changing. Nasty trying to hide the option. I guess it's 3 or 4 percent they tack on, but not sure.
