  • Is it better than Kxx?

    • They're the former flagship headphones of AKG and from what I recall from the last time I heard them, yea.

  • +2

Might be useful to throw "AKG K712" at the front of the title :)

    • +1

lol, I thought I put it in there already. My bad haha, edited now thanks!

  • I've been using a pair of these for a couple of years now and they're great, no complaints whatsoever.

  • Some reasonably comprehensive reviews here:
    https://www.head-fi.org/f/showcase/akg-k712-pro.16244/
    http://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/akg-k612-k712

It would be interesting to know how these compare to the Sennheiser HD598SE headphones that I bought through Ozbargain recently. Got them from Amazon France for AU$140, down from around EU300.

I'm tempted to buy a pair of these anyway, to use with my guitars in my music room, and then keep the 598s for audio in my office.

Easier than swapping them around constantly!

    • From memory these are more comparable to the HD600, and if you haven't got one already you'll need a headphone amp to get the most out of the AKGs.

      • Thanks dav3.

That's about what I thought about the quality comparion, reading the reviews.

I decided to buy a pair of the K712s - so I'll soon be able to compare the two!

I've already taken the headphone amp suggestion on board - just about all the knowledgable sites say that you need a headphone amp for both the HD598SE and the K712.

So it's now a question of finding two good but cheap(ish)amps. Although most of the time the K712 will be used with two of my modelling guitar amps, and only occasionally through software amps on computer.

        • I use a E10K to run my K7XX. I had been looking at getting the SCHIIT units though.

      • +1

According to message posts on headfi an E10K can power the K712s. That's as cheap an amp as you're going to find. And it's a portable amp, so you can use it with your phone.

        • Thanks guys.

Decisions, decisions. The E10K for AU$105.90, or the Schiit Audio Magni 2 for AU$199.00.

I think the Schiit will probably be the better choice for my computers.

For my modelling amp I'll have to go from USB out, as the headphone sockets are crap. So I'll need a USB headphone amp for this.

        • @edwardcr:

I'm surprised E10K costs that much. I bought E17K for about $80 which includes a DAC. Also supports USB.

    • You got a good deal on your 598. I almost bought a pair myself, but I have too many headphones and can't use them all.

      • Yes - that was a great deal.

I bought them to replace a pair of Sennheiser HD457s which have performed really well for 15 years, but are falling apart.

Edit: dav3 - sorry, didn't mean to directly reply to your comment

    • Go on. You know you want to.

  • got it from last deal. indeed really good.

buying headphone is easy part…now pair it with propriate amp/dac…..

i really want the schiit combo but rip australia….

    • Wha's the best price you found the schiit for so far?

      • cant remember, at leas 300$+ almost 400$.

and right now, there are only auctions on ebay….

  • So connecting this directly into my phone is a waste of money without a decent amp?

    • What phone do you have?

    • Depends on the phone. Both my S6 and S8 can handle 250 ohm (and probably 600 if I had a pair to test it on) no problem. They must have a built in amp of some sort. But I can't promise every phone has it. I would assume an iPhone has a built in amp just based on how expensive they are.

      • Every phone has an amp, otherwise you won't be able to hear any sound.

And you can hear the sound using you S8 doesn't mean your phone drives the can well, it might just sound no better than a $20 pair headphones.

        • They definitely sound better than a $20 pair of headphones. I can assure you of that. And they're loud.

  • How are these vs massdrop 6xx aka sennheiser hd650?

    • Crap, I didn't realise the Massdrop Sennheisers were the 650's - I thought they were (based off) the 600's. $271 delivered? Just ordered a pair. Thanks, man!

      • lol

      • Might have to wait a bit.

Mass drop also do AKG K7xx.

        • Yeah, shipping isn't until December for the HD6xx. I wouldn't bother with the AKG K7xx when you can get the K712 for less.

  • They don't look like they will fit a long head like mine. Can anyone comment?

The leather strap moves up I'm assuming, but they won't move past the orange metal bands will they?

When I pull my Beyer bands as far as they will go, the distance between the arch of the band and the earcups is longer than they look on these K12. If anyone has a pair please tell me if the band extends far or not. And if it's enough. I imagine that even if I cut the leather strap off and used only the two orange wires as the headband, it still wouldn't be long enough for my head.

Some headphones don't extend far enough for me. And it's not like I'm a freak of nature or anything.

Another concern I have is that the detatchable cable does not look like a standard 3.5mm cable. It looks proprietory. Which means you'd have to buy their (expensive) version instead of using ones you already have. And is it a long cable? Because I'd like to replace it with a 60cm cable if possible. Do AKG make shorter cables?

    Can anyone comment on that?

    • Just a XLR cable. Most professional grade audio equipments use that. You can go buy one from Jaycar. It has XLR on one end and the 3.5 on the other (along with an adapter).

I am not sure if I have a long head, but am a big person and it fits perfectly. The headstrap rests on top of your head to put the ear cups over your ears, and it has adjustments.

      • Did a bit of research. It's actually a mini XLR, and these are not cheap or common on ebay (at least in the length I want, which is 1m). The full size XLR is cheaper and more available.

        • Happy with my two 1.2m from eBay.
Several to choose from.Prices start at $11.42.

        • They have 1.2M mini-XLR everywhere on eBay for $10 - $100. Dunno what the hell you're doing wrong to find nothing and at too high a price. I've also had my K712s for >5 years and haven't changed the headphone cable once.

        • @potplanty: Well, I consider $10 not cheap for an audio cable. Full sized XLR can be bought for $4.

I'm not changing the cable because it's damaged. I want a different cable because the ones they come with are too long.

  • ARGH. Ok you got me. I bought a pair.

    Damn you.

  • +1

    Have two pair.
Run them off Xduoo X3 portable players,my laptops and a 1080p projector at night time without the need of an amp.
Do have a couple of Topping NX2 portable amps,if required.
K712 are comfortable and sound great. Have a large head and over an inch left on both sides.
    Fantastic price!
Get in before Samsung start making them. They bought the firm a while ago.

    • K712 are comfortable and sound great. Have a large head and over an inch left on both sides.

      That's good to hear.

Get in before Samsung start making them. They bought the firm a while ago.

Samsung bought them, but I don't think they'll start making it themselves. May as well use the factories that AKG owned. They're already set up to go.

  • Btw for anyone still interested can use the code COZZIE to get it for around $244.
