Even the new Surface Pro has been launched yet the Surface Pro 4 is not back to sale in Australia. In US they have marked Pro 4 selling price down for $150. I waited enough and decided to order it through Amazon. The current price is less than $1,000 so you don’t have to pay duty.

The blue type cover is also very attempting.
hyperlinked text

The best deal I can find is US$128.99 (Stone Deals USA) + $3 handle & shipping by using fulfillment by Amazon bundle (Australia RRP is AU$250), yet it will jack the total order value over AU$1,000 and trigger duty charge. Ordering the type cover separately will be cheaper. I only realise this after paid my order (dang!). I also am aware Microsoft Amazon have the type cover on sale for $117.99 but shipping fee to Australia is over US$100. What a joke… BTW I'm from Sydney and not sure if Amazon shipping fee is different to other cities/states.

Microsoft Australia offer 10% off to students and educators which doesn't apply to Pro 4/only applicable to New Surface Pro.

Also as "emperorcrispy" mentioned on his/her comment the duty policy has been updated by removing the $1,000 threshold. Therefore duty is applicable technically.

However, on the checkout it still shows $0 for duty charge on order value less than $1,000 when I posted this deal. I guess either Amazon or ATO has not updated their policy yet. You won't pay it on the checkout and I don't think you will be charged afterwards (will ATO track us down and knock our doors for $80?).

Better grab it before they realise this loophole.

4GB RAM is not big enough. Better pay more to get 8GB one if you want to use it for more than 3 years.

    • +4

4G RAM is not a lot but depends on what do you plan to do with your Surface Pro. I have a PC at home for gaming and sort of. I just need a carry around tablet for works mainly using Office.

If you are a designer or ish better get the i7 version.

      • -1

$900 for MS Office is a bit steep for me.

    • The 8gb also has 256gb storage

      • +2

But it costs US$400 more. That's almost 60% expensive!

        • +2

Yeah as it's not part of this sale. I am writing this message on the exact device we're talking about, and I paid $400AUD more than this. $900AUD is a good price for this model, but it might not do everything you want it to, as fast as you want it to!

    • Actually, 4GB RAM is still acceptable but 128GB SSD on a windows machine make it almost useless. It would fill up in a couple of months for normal use.

      • +1

128GB is limited but there is a microSD slot - chuck 256Gb card in there and you're set

      • Totally depends on the workload

      • 128Gb coupled with a 128Gb Micro SD is enough for me. Everything else is on OneDrive and Dropbox

        Sorted

    • +1

do you know what is big enough?

    • 4GB is plenty for some workloads, however it is also useless for some. Best thing is to look at the requirements for what you plan to do on it, then make a decision based on that

    • 4GB is plenty for general use - internet, Office, streaming videos, some basic gaming etc. I have a 4GB SP3 and it is still an awesome device.

  • Looks like 6% CashRewards ($53.79) is applicable too making it $842.78 … or am I mistaken?

    • +5

Only selected categories, where "Computers" is not one of them.

  • Nice Find, I am hoping Australian Retailers will discount more and not just the M3 model

  • Any recommendations on if it's worth getting an older model Surface Pro tablet if I'm looking at one that is snappy for productivity and can do very light gaming (older titles)? Preferably with a I5 CPU.

Any major disadvantage other then change in specs and warranty if I go an older model like the 2 or 3?

    • You mean 2nd hand? Crap battery life would be the first thing I'd consider but of course it may be the least of your worries if it's been dropped and/or mistreated. In saying that though I've had experience with a lot of used computer gear and most of it has been absolutely perfect! The majority of it was desktop based but most of the Laptops were pretty decent too… apart from the well used battery.

      • Yes, 2nd hand or refurbished - if I could find somewhere reputable or from Microsoft directly if they sold them. It's a shame the batteries aren't easily swappable.

        • I doubt you'll find anything decent for under $600-$700 so it may be worth considering saving up that bit more and grabbing a brand newbie when they go on clearance as per this one.

        • @SteveAndBelle:
Found a few Surface Pro 2 and some 3's for under $600 but like you said, it may be worth spending a little extra for something better and peace of mind.

        • +1

@cheepo: yeah this might be a time that you have to put aside being a cheepo

        • @GossipGoat:
I see what you did there!

Actually don't consider myself that bad in real life. I only picked this username to align with site and not have any association to the regular one I usually stick to.

        • @cheepo: haha didn't mean any offence I just had to :P

        • @GossipGoat:

None taken. I could see the humour in it and I up-voted your comment! :)

    • worth considering a surface alternative. Lenovo Miix 510 with i5/8GB/256GB is selling for 929 at JB HiFi. Get Officeworks or Good Guys to Price Match and you get it cheaper with the keyboard and pen included and better specs.

However, it is a different product and if you prefer Surface and then so be it.

      • Apparently it has inferior display and mediocre battery life compared to the surface.

      • I have previously looked Lenovos range as I've impressed with the durability of their laptops but not sure of these in the long term. Really need something durable and capable of everyday use regardless of setting. Also trying to consider resale value if I decide to sell it later down the track as I can get a bit finicky with my tech.

Currently using an Android tablet and an old Windows Laptop to move/transfer/convert files, emails etc. It's becoming too counter productive trying to manage those devices alongside my phone.

Thanks for the tip though. I'll take a better look at this model.

    • +1

If it was cheap enough and in good nick I would certainly recommend it. I'd bite at $500 for a good i5 SP3 and $750 for a good i5 SP4.

I've got a SP3 128/4GB i5 that I use as my primary PC at work and it's been great. It's driving a 32 inch 4K monitor (at 4K which means the surface screen is off) that has 4x USB ports in it, and it is more than up to the task of general office-y duties, multiple applications open at a time, remote connections to other PC's and the odd older game. I've got a 128GB micro SD card in it that holds music, pics, and docs, and programs are installed on the main drive. The only time I notice it slowing down is when I've got 7+tabs open in Chrome and it will reload when I switch applications or switch between tabs if I've got Outlook and excel and our work software open at the same time.

      • Sounds more then adequate for my needs.

How long have you had it and how's the battery life on it considering you're using it a daily driver? Are you running Windows 8 or 10?

        • I actually got it from Microsoft as a direct warranty replacement for my SP1 after it failed 1 month shy of the 2 year warranty expiring. It was about 6 months after the SP3 came out, so I think from memory about 2 years ago (I will forever sing the virtues of Microsoft hardware warranty).

It was running W8 for a while, but as soon as W10 came out I jumped on board. The battery is still pretty good when I take it out for on-site meetings, but I don't let it get too low all that often. At a guess I would say about 3-4 hours of solid non-stop use before I start looking for a charger, but I can take it on the road all day for meetings and I don't get too concerned as I just take steps to stretch it out (lower the brightness, turn off all radios, etc).

        • @ebosh:

Surprising that you can still get a few decent hours on it after nearly 2 years of daily use and that its handling Windows 10 just fine.

Now to decide which route I take. Wait for a possible further price drop on this or take a chance on second hand SP2/3. Thanks for replying.

        • +1

@cheepo: This thing (and MS) has impressed me so much that I am practically an MS evangelist. Hell, I was entirely happy with my SP1, and I even said on the phone to them that I was more than happy with a refurb unit but they sent me a brand new SP3 and type cover instead. I even almost bought a windows phone as a result of my experience with MS and my SP3 ;) I take credit for 7 other people I know buying SP's and they are all wrapped with them as well.

        • @ebosh:

Awesome. In my opinion, feedback from somebody whose used the product everyday is a lot meaningful then any video reviews or those that are posted on a product page.

I've only dealt with MS regarding warranty when it came to 2 separate Xbox 360s I owned a few years ago and they are were great then too. Any other time I've dealt with them since on the phone or via live chat regarding a digital purchase or a billing problem, they have always been more then accommodating to help me out (even when it's been entirely my fault) so I certainly believe you.

        • @cheepo: No worries mate; happy to help.

    • Best bang for buck would be the SP3 with the SP4 type cover, only thing is battery life and slightly lower IPC.

  • -3

Why has this received enough up votes for the front page?

$900 for 4GB RAM, 128GB storage and one USB port. Are you having a laugh?

    • +1

Because it's cheaper than it's ever been. Duh.

    • +1

Yes of course you can build a super computer ultrabook with 4x Titan XPs in SLI in a slimmer body for half the price (we know), but this SP4's price is much cheaper than the Australian equivalent version. Hence a bargain.

Don't forget, it also comes with a magical pen.

      • so true. how is it different to people comparing Android specs to iPhone specs?

        • Because this is a Windows device. You can get other Windows devices, at the same price, with much better features.

OzBargain community's IT prowess (or rather, complete lack thereof) is mind numbing.

        • +1

@O15: Well what other Windows device can you get that is < $900, weights less than 0.87kg, is a 2 in 1 and have better specs?

The Acer Switch Alpha 12 with i7-6500u, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, keyboard and pen included at binglee ebay with 10% off sale?
Battery life is worse, but spec and cost wise, it's better than a sp4 i5.

        • @feidao:

Cost wise? Deals are a separate thing, Sp4's can be found for much lower than this.
MS is offering pretty good bang for buck if you ask me

          Acer Switch Alpha 12, 4GB, 128GB SSD
          Quick Overview
          Windows 10 Home, Intel® Core™ i3-6100U processor Dual-core 2.30 GHz, 30.5 cm (12") QHD (2160 x 1440) 3:2 IPS, Intel® Shared Memory, 4 GB LPDDR3, 128 GB SSD

          A$1390.00

          Direct from Acer

          MS Store

Same specs(m3 tho), better battery, not to mention Microsofts killer support, build quality and amazing screen
          AU$899.00 incl. GST

Could even go up to the i5 model and be under

        • @O15:

Mate, what people see in a laptop is not the same as what you see, theres a reason this stuff sells. Microsoft have amazing support behind their products and they are built extremely well. Specs aren't everything for everyone. Even saying that, its still a bloody good deal, My SP4 has been serving me well now since launch, only being used as a secondary as of last week however it hasn't missed a beat and I'd have no troubles recommending it to anyone.

  • -4

If these Surface Pro's only have 4GB RAM and/or Core M processor… is it safe to call them "netbooks" ??

    • +1

You can call what you like. The bargain above does not have Core M processor. Not sure what's the point of your post. This is a good bargain.

  • Hi OP.
    I am wondering about warranty.
Will Microsoft Australia give this a one year warrantee?

    • +1

Yeah they do, they don't even ask for the receipt, its handled very similarly to Apple warranty as long as you activate it in aus

  • +1

I got my Type Cover from Harvey Norman B&E for $158.40 shipped. Go to the website from the Cashrewards link.

    • -2

Does this not even come with their atrocious type cover?
Not much better than an on screen keyboard.

      • +1

It's heaps better than the on screen keyboard.
Looks like Harvey Norman put their price back up to $198, so don't bother looking there.

      • +1

Have you used one?? They're heaps better. They're not as good as a good desktop keyboard, but they're pretty decent.

        • -1

Yes. I've used a type cover. I've also used many other types of keyboards, so I know what a good keyboard feels like.

I would rather use one of the cheap membrane keyboards, bundled with a Dell/HP/etc. system than a type cover.

Look, I can't stop random people on the internet from purchasing a Microsoft Surface (nor does it bother me enough to want to). I would just hope people explore their options, before spending a decent bit of money on device with such a low utility to dollar ratio.
In saying that, it did genuinely annoying me when Linus recommended the Surface as the best laptop for a university student.
He should know better, it was a ridiculous decision. I'm fortunate enough to have the knowledge and experience to watch his videos and form my own conclusions. Most of his viewers would not have this ability, he did them a disservice.

        • +2

@O15: I work in IT. Advised my wife to get a Lenovo that had a great ozbargain, she decided on the Surface. Having actually now used it for a decent amount of time, I concede I was wrong, my opinion now is that it is by far the best device for many situations if you can afford it.

The weight, keyboard and stand are better than competitors, the trade off for this is the price. Yes you can get a similar device cheaper, but not cheaper and better.

      • It's MUCH better than any on screen keyboard of any type. I use my type cover a lot and find it works really well. I use an expensive mechanical keyboard on my desktop PC and Mac, and although not as good as one of those, obviously because it really can't be from a design perspective, it's a very decent experience IMO.

    • I just want that bright blue type cover because I'm brain washed by all the commercials. Do you hate it as much as I do that they put a good colour item on all their commercials but make it unavailable all the time and/or overcharging you for it. Since it's only colour difference I bet the manufacture costs are identical.

      Just take my money! :(

  • If only they have the core m version on sale too. I actually want that one because it's fanless.

    • There was a sale for that at AUD $699 few month ago.
I got one fantastic device, high quality screen and very nice details.
I doubt if it below manufacture cost.

only downside is battery life is very pool,4 hours maxium

    • The Amazon link I post does have the core m version on sale for $618.99 + Shipping & Import Fees which is 31% off from RRP according to the website.

      • That one's still expensive.

    • The M version is now part of the deal and $551 USD.

      • I was all over this, tried to check out and it doesn't ship to Australia, probably because it is not fulfilled by Amazon.

        • sorry about that, it does appear to be a different seller, but on the page has the usual:
This item ships to … Australia. Want it Friday, Aug. 18?

i5 is down to $644 USD, but understand you're after something else.

  • The (black) Type Cover can be had for about $140USD from Amazon too: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0163H1HT6/ref=od_aui_deta…

Just ordered one to upgrade the wearing keyboard on my Pro 3; should be a good improvement.

    • Oops, I did mean AUD. It's $100USD.

  • Great price! I bought one a few months back, but found very little use of it. I use mostly the desktop at home, laptop when moving around the house, and when outside I just use the phone. I guess I would use it more if I don't have a laptop.

  • Just a note to the original description about not paying duty below $1000. As of July 1 2017 the government now charges duty (GST) on all imports including those below $1000. Take note that you will pay another 10% on the cost of the item and also the cost of the shipping price.

    • I did thought about that. But on the checkout it still shows $0 for duty charge on order value less than $1,000. I guess either Amazon or ATO has not updated their policy. You won't pay it on the checkout and I don't think you will be charged afterwards (will ATO track us down and knock our doors for $80?).

Better grab it before they realise the loophole.

    • +1
    • +1

That's from next financial year - 1st July 2018. not this year. They delayed it. There's only added tax for digital services like eBay sellers, netflix etc for this financial year

Does surface have international warranty I.e if it's faulty can you send to Microsoft in Aus ?

Secondly will power supply work here with a different cable or do you need transformer ?

    • Yes to both

  • Further price drop: $851.30 via something like 28 degrees mastercard.

Tempted to upgrade from my surface 3 (atom) but concerned about battery life.

    http://donovancolbert.blogspot.com.au/2016/05/surface-3-vs-s…

    • Don't be, battery life is amazing, used to get me from around 8am to 4pm everyday with pretty heavy use. From Unity to just web browsing, lasted every day and didnt have to worry about bringing a spare charger

EDIT; Periodic use, not non stop

  • Does anyone know whether Microsoft Australia will honor the warranty of a Surface Pro 4 purchased from Amazon and shipped to Australia?

    • Nope you have to go through Amazon who are pretty good for DOA stuff.

I ended up holding out on this. Surface 3 still holding up well and I'm used to the size and 7-8hr battery life vs 4-6 of the surface pro 4. Might wait for sales of the new surface pro next year…

      • I beg to differ…

    • Yes they will, I had mine sent in and they sent it with a second charge for free!

  • Much better off with ASUS Transformer 3 @Kogan with $9 delivery

Thunderbolt 3 is a big selling point for that tablet, only thing is ASUS warranty tends to be pretty dog$hit and build quality isnt the best from what I've heard.

Still worth taking a look at

      • all warranty is crapola, but its better than the alternative for such expensive items

        • Yeah, had to return an ASUS board once and it was pretty bad, MS is great on the other hand. However if you had the chance to have a look at both at like a JBHF or something that would be good to compare both of them as ASUS tends to also have pretty crap QC

        • @H32017: Thanks, going to jump on this.
If you wanted to update the thread, the M version is now part of the deal and $551 USD and the i5 4gb is down to $625 USD.

        • @noone025: Good to know. Hopefully you have as good of an experience as I did!

  • The M version is now part of the deal and $551 USD. I still think the i5 is worth it for any multitasking and overall smoothness, but if you wanted it without the keyboard cover for very basic usage, is a great price.

    • Doesn't ship to Aus though :(

      • Does for me?
This item ships to …, Australia. Want it Friday, Aug. 18?

  • Does anyone know if we need a voltage converter or sth similar given it's shipped from the states?

    • +1

No. Just a cheap plug adaptor for the wall. Runs off 110-240V.

  • no longer ship to oz

    • on the product page it seems to, which version are you looking at?

  • This is still available and actually even cheaper now, plus better exchange. I get approx. $815 AUD delivered to Sydney using Amazon exchange (would probably be a little better using 28 degrees or similar card)
