  • Any idea which 500gb you get free? Also, these guys don't seem to stock the Goflex accessories (USB3.0)? I'd be keen if the 500 was also a goflex!

    • The red hard drive on the coupon is a go flex, but I doubt that's what they're offering. If it were, they would make it explicit since it would be a hard deal to pass up. I think it might be the Go, which is cheaper.

Get FREE 500Gb Freeagent with 1Tb model (limit 1 per customer)

  • Is this a good deal? Curious, like having 1.5TB of 2.5"!

  • I like the bit where it says you can upgrade to usb 3.0 lol

For those looking to pull the 1tb apart for the drive inside, it's not a true 2.5", but slightly thicker, so you'll have to decide whether your laptop/console has the room to accommodate it

    • "true 2.5" ??? Actually this is a 12.5mm thick drive as apposed to the 9.5mm drives usually found in laptops. Both are standards. Some laptops (such as current MBP and many 17" Win Laptops) ca use either.

      • Please forgive my ignorance regarding standards. I have merely read reports on various forums of these drives not fitting into certain laptops. Perhaps a better word would be "typical."

        • Think you are confusing Width (wide) vs Height

The only 2 widths commonly available for laptops etc are 1.8" & 2.5"

Height well Ozdavo said it best

          • @Mikinoz: er…I'm referring to the height…not sure what you're talking about.

I'm merely pointing out that the specs on the Seagate website list the 1tb as thicker than the 500gb. If they were the same thickness, they would use the same case.

If anything, I shouldn't have assumed that 2.5" hdd were built to a 9.5mm thick standard.

            • @illusionarybreeze: That was obvious from your first comment! it does say it clearly that i am referring to width and i am assuming you know what width is ?

              let me explain

when you measure something you measure normally in height width and depth

  • That is a very good deal to me. I'm in fact about to press the checkout button but decided to read a bit more about them. And I found this review:

    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/centre-com.html

No sure which reviews are true, which are scams, but if you never bought from centrecom before, might be worth having a look at what others say about them.

    • Centrecom are always flat out. Generally I've found them to be okay… had faulty monitor replaced no questions asked, bought an Asus laptop from them a few years back… etc.
Biggest problem I've found is that if you buy something and need to return it they charge a 15% restocking fee. I find this completely unacceptable and am surprised that it is legal to charge it. After being burnt by this about a year ago I haven't been back. Hope this helps

  • Officeworks sells this for $249… I wonder if they'd price match the entire deal…

Btw I bought a 2tb WD Green hard disk from the Hawthorn CentreCom store and it was fine. Charged me a surcharge for Amex but otherwise it was ok.

  • The cheapest via staticice appears to be http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Freeagent+G… $183.20 (before shipping). Hence you are paying about $35.80 for a 500GB external. (Although if you actually go to GreenBoxIT's website it says $201.XX for the 1TB - http://greenboxit.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=3837_3847&pr…)

How do you UPGRADE it to FW800?
EDIT: Centrecom appears to have a picture of the smaller 500GB drive. The bigger drives are chunky:
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-au/products/external/external-…

  • How do you upgrade it to esata?

    • There is an upgrade kit that allows you to change the interface between the drive and the computer. Drive>>upgrade kit>>computer.

The upgrade kit is basically a cable with a dongle like thing at the end that contains the interface, be it usb 3.0, e-sata, firewire etc

I also wonder what kind of "Bouns" (Hot Cross, Wholemeal, etc ???) u get as per the linked email pic - http://upload.ozbargain.com/2010/09/29/4497_centrecom1tbdeal…

    Shipping to NSW = $18
Shipping to metro Vic + Geelong = $8.25

  • Looks like a really really appropriate deal for me in terms of what I'm currently looking for. I wanted a 1x 1TB External Hard Drive with eSATA and a 500GB with eSATA (preferably 2.5", even though I know 2.5" with eSATA is rare). This pretty much fits it perfectly!

Although, I too am looking for a bit more information.

As nfr asked, I am also curious as to how this is upgraded to eSATA and USB 3.0 (and whether this is for just the 1TB or the 500GB too)
As with atlas, I am also curious as to whether this could be price-matched at Officeworks.
Also wondering whether this can be picked up from one of the VIC branches.

illusionarybreeze, that also means it wouldn't fit in the PS3, correct?

I'm also a bit hesitant about this, as it is a Seagate and even though Seagate are one of the big guns, I was just reading this last night, and the performance of its hard drive on eSATA was on par with USB 2.0. Even though it seems to have been written in 2007, and Seagate has had plenty of time to polish up the performance, I haven't been able to find anything more recent.

    Some additional information for anyone:
From what I remember, 500GB portable drives have been relatively cheap. As cheap as, say, $59-69.
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/26435 - Posted 3rd June 2010, $69 Seagate from MLN
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/28705 - Posted 20th July 2010, $65+shipping Samsung from pricesengine.com
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/27836 - Posted 30th June 2010, $59 Iomega? Seagate? from Lapyking

So assume it's $69, breaking it down, that would make this 1TB portable $150.

    • How does the portable drive have eSata? considering there's no power over sata…..

      • Indeed. The description for the upgrade cable reads thus:

Upgrade to eSATA connectivity and you'll experience performance that's up to 6x faster than USB 2.0. And no additional power is required because the cable is connected to the drive's eSATA/USB combo port. Requires powered eSATA/USB combo port (not compatible with standard eSATA ports).

    • Hey, yeah I'm also considering the offer in terms of previous deals and it's fairly competitive in terms of the amount of memory being offered.

To upgrade the drive, check out these accessories on the seagate website:
      http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/accessories/
Halfway down the page, you'll find some "upgrade cables" that you can substitute for the default one, and allow you to connect to different interfaces on your computer.

As to whether it will fit into the PS3, I can't be sure. I was researching earlier into the 880gb FreeAgent Go, and even though it was portable, it was slightly thicker than the typical 2.5" drive. (It was being compared on youtube by a reviewer, who raised the issue in case anyone was considering putting it into their laptop.)

From pictures and video that I've seen of the 1tb in this deal, it seems thicker than usual. The Seagate website lists the 1tb as being 22mm thick, whereas the 500gb is 14mm. Hence my suspicion.

Not sure about Officeworks, pick-up, transfer times etc. Maybe someone else more tech-savvy could chip in on that. Cheers.

  • Anyone know if these are regular 2.5" sata hardrives inside?
really like to use the 1tb for my ps3…

    • Most likely will be the thicker drives and wont fit

      • +1

I've upgraded my PS3 to 500gb and it is a very tight fit. So this thicker 1TB will not fit, even though it is a 2.5" drive.

        • the 2.5 refers to wide as oppose to height anything 2.5 wide will work in a PS3 although anything larger than 9.5m high wont fit!

so the drive ppl need to look for is anything 2.5" wide and no more than 9.5mm high ie a normal laptop hard drive not the newer external drives

    • PS3 requires 9.5mm drive. Currently 2.5" 1tb drives are 12.5mm, therefore will not fit. I believe currently 750gb is the largest capacity 9.5mm drive available.

For anyone wondering I ordered these drives.
Received them today and am very happy with the whole process.
    It included;
    1 x 1TB Seagate GoFlex - Black
    1 x 500GB Seagate GoFlex - Red
Both work perfectly and shipped very fast.
Apart from the stupid thing of having to send them a photocopy of your credit card to stop fraud (wtf?), which i decided not to do and switched to a direct bank deposit, which was very easy and also saved me from a credit card surcharge. It was approved the next day (Friday) and the items were shipped on Monday (a public holiday!) and were shipped overnight and came today. All in all very easy process great communication, emailed me every time they had an update etc.
And in response to everyones questions yes the 1TB is larger physically than the 500GB.
