Cashback Sites and OzBargain

Greetings,

Firstly I would like to request cashback employees who post on here regularly to refrain from posting as I do not want the thread going off-topic like every other discussion recently has. I would like what to know what the general population of the website thinks.

What is a cashback site?
As you know you click on an affiliate link on the cashback site that redirects you to the online store, upon loading into the store the website places a cookie on your browser to track your shopping/viewing habits within the store. Generally this is no big deal as most links these days are tracked for analytical purposes.

We'll use eBay for an example. If a user buys a digital camera using an affiliate link from a cashback site the affiliate will receive up to 70% of the final fee (there is also bonuses for the affiliate if the user has not bought anything for a year). However in order for someone to use the affiliate link they'll give you an incentive, say 1.3% out of the potential 70% they receive. As most of the time these links are hidden and not seen by the end user.

Like every affiliate program out there you cannot simply buy one item and then withdraw your earnings, they are actually normally set to a specific amount where in most cases the end user will never reach the withdrawal minimum which means the affiliate will keep your earnings. So after handing over your data to another party you might not even get anything out of it, unless you spend a great deal of money through that affiliate then which you should receive your money if the deals are tracked successfully.

The issue I have with these programs being blasted on here is that in the real world the affiliate (rewards sites) have to actively advertise their services to they get paid, and we know that costs money. But what if you could use a website that is community driven by a large number of users and post your affiliate links there and make a killing? That's something that would never happen anywhere else but here.

The other issue I see is as an example would be if I was to sign up to say banggood's affiliate program and post a link here with a deal, my post would be either deleted or edited with the affiliate link removed because this is against the rules. However for an employee of a cashback site that is paid by sharing these links allowed to do this here with no issues at all. I get some of these people bring a lot of traffic to the site by posting good deals, I'm not knocking that but turning a blind eye to it seems strange to me. There is potential money to be made?

I personally would rather see the owners of this site replacing all outbound links with their own referral links and see that money kept inhouse for the OzBargain community to grow and pay the bills instead of the community being taken advantage of with cash reward sites.

I love to know what the community thinks by responding to the poll and if possible how much have you withdrawn using these sites (if anything)?

Thanks

TLDR: Cashback companies using OzB for free advertising and giving nothing in return to OzB.

edit: price -> fee, regardless of amount commission is still earned whether it's 2% or 70%.

          I'd be more worried about that auspost bill.

        • @nocure: $4000! I wonder what he is doing…

          @Clear:
          Maybe reselling "disposable junk imported from china, online courses & ebooks" :)

        • @nocure:

          Items I sell on Ebay at an average cost of $35-45 to ship all over the world, far from disposable junk too i might add

          tried to use couriers and other methods but costs were much the same

  • RIP, he was a good man

    How come he disabled his account

  • +4

    Well, that de-escalated quickly.

  • I avoid them as the plague.
    Simple question is: What's the value of your privacy?

  • My opinion ozbargain has been a r&d platform for catch of the day in studying consumer behaviour, marketing and strategy. Its a good buy indeed.

    Not sure how much ozbargain makes as a community sharing/ forum type business model but the potential traffic alone shows that companies could deal with them directly for a fee if they want to.

    Note: Tightarse is awesome, without him we wouldnt know microsoft is giving free yuyu hakusho, dbz and fairy tail first season for free and etc :)

    I'm very late to this party but I'll add my 2 cents.

    I'm not one to jump on bandwagons but I will share my thoughts. I use OzBargain because it saves me money, and sometimes I just click on deals to see the humorous conversations. I've been using CashRewards for a few years though only seriously in the last few months.

    It's simple for me:

    OzB saves me money
    CR saves me money (and occasionally makes me money - such as recent Amaysim deal)

    WIN/WIN.

    I don't care who posts a deal which will save or make me money, nor do I care how many of these deals are posted. Isn't that the whole point of OzB? I haven't read every single post but some of the claims from the deleted user (I never saw who it was) are ridiculous.

    More of a good thing doesn't become a bad thing, not in this context. Keep up the good work Tightarse, and any other deal sharer who saves or makes me money.

    • So, moral of the story is: FK the rules on OzBargain as long as everyone makes/saves money.

      Happy days

      • Given most people support the notion of saving money (and/or making money) in the OzBargain community I don't see the problem. We can agree to disagree and still be friends though, right? :)

  • Does this mean we will never see the results of the poll?

    Cashback websites are a waste of time. I only used them once. can't be bothered waiting 6 months.

    • you don't like free cash?

      • I do but going through all the hoops and destroying your shopping experience for a couple of bucks after six months (which you can't withdraw until reaching minumium amount)is not worth it.

        • +1

          I'm not at my computer right now but isn't the minimum withdrawal amount $5 from CR? Refer a friend, instant $5.

          Generally the eligibility requirement just involves going to the vendor via CR portal and ensuring ad blocker is disabled.

          I'm lazy and don't like jumping through hoops either but this is really quite painless. With CR's chrome addon it's even easier (plus it tells you when your on an eligible site)

        • @Click_It: Its showing me 10.01 minimum. Now I am forced to buy more through CR just to have the privilege of withdrawing my existing CR balance.

          @kkmenon1156:

          If you don't have a balance higher then $10.01, you're doing something wrong.

          @kkmenon1156:

          Sorry my mistake.

          But as nocure said, it's not hard to get over $10.01

          I'm now treating CR as an annual christmas funds bonus. As I said I only recently starting taking it serious but should have between $150-250 this Christmas. Being more dedicated the following years I should be able to do much better. And I'm not spending $1000's to achieve that either, just jumping on the smart cash backs mostly. Woolies have the odd $50 ones, Amaysim have had cashbacks greater than expenditure (although granted those do involve some hoops), it shouldn't be too hard to accrew a decent total for most savvy OzBargainers. Then anytime I use ebay or any site I just use CR by habit, granted those purchases usually only add between $0.10 to $5 for the majority, if it's something I'm buying regardless what's 1 or 2 more clicks.

          Not having a go, just sharing my viewpoint. You're welcome to not agree with it :)

          @kkmenon1156: Next time you go make a purchase check to see if the website is on CR. I travel frequently and for a long time didn't realise that all the hotel booking websites were on CR. I can get 5.6% on hotels with Wotif and 2% with Virgin. For a week away it adds up.

        • +1

          @Clear:

          Yeah it's pretty amazing what's on CR that you'd never have realised. I highly recommend installing the CR extension if using Chrome (I'm unsure if other browsers have an equivalent), what that will do is produce a popup if you're on a site supported by CR, it'll also provide a quick login option.

          Without it I wouldn't have recently be made aware of some home lotteries sites have CR (up to 20%) where I was already a supporting member, so I'll re-signing up via CR.

          I didn't know about the hotels either, thanks Clear :)

        • @Clear: Also with Hotels.com you get a free night after staying 10 nights. So you can stack the CR with the free nights and it's sweet :D
