Reasons I Dislike ALDI, They pissed me off today

I don't buy much from there outside of when they have special items e.g. Snow gear or some obscure gardening stuff.

  1. Parking usually a nightmare (No quick in and out especially with stand alone stores as they just do the bare minimum to fulfil council requirements)
  2. Everyone seems to have over 10 items (feels like a million)
  3. The checkout dudes seem to work really slow (or maybe just appears that way as they are seated and don't show sign of urgency)
  4. No free plastic bags
  5. Charge extra for VISA/Mastercard (come on guys I am sure you can afford the < 1% fee and I am sure there is plenty of profits to be sent overseas)
  6. No self checkout (I like them as I don't regard checkout persons as service and would rather have these staff members on the floor helping me find items)

The reason for my rant today is I couldn't get out of the Balwyn North store (one of the new stores) as you can only exit through the checkouts and the 2 checkouts aisles were so narrow that if someone had a trolley in the checkout you can't go by the side of it. I hope they haven't made it like a jail as they are too cheap to employ security guards (didn't notice any there)

Also the profits get sent overseas anyway being foreign owned unlike Woolies/Coles

Is OP for real? You want to shop at Aldi and want them to keep their price down but
    - Pay for your plastic bag;
    - Pay for you to use your card; and
    - Employed security guards to drive the expenses up.

    How cheap can someone be?

  • self righteous xyz who has nothing to give but his whinging

  • I hate that they don't have baskets. Like really, its a trolley or carry everything in your hands.
People only seem to do big shops there, and you get stuck in long queues.
I much prefer quick self checkouts at safe ways/coles.

And having to buy plastic bags everytime is bloody annoying

You don't have to buy bags, take a cardboard box ( or ask for one).

    How to love Aldi:

    1. Get a trolley token and keep it on your key ring.
    2. Buy yourself a set of trolley bags for big shops and a collapsible basket for small shops - keep them in your car.
    3. Use your savings account - no surcharge.
    4. Let people with only a couple of items go in front of you when you have a full trolley - pay it forward and hopefully they do the same for you one day!
    5. Try everything at least once. I started with nappies, then the chocolate, then organic tinned tomatoes, then tuna, then washing powder. Now I buy almost all my groceries at Aldi and a few things at Woolies.

I remember feeling almost offended by the shopping experience the first time I went there. Now I love the place. Only 4 aisles to navigate means I save time as well as money!

    • we're holding it the wrong way

    • Yep, one of my favourite things about ALDI is that it doesn't take an hour just to get through the store. Shopping is simple. Only a handful of aisles, and you don't need to hunt through 60 different brands of everything to find the best price. Shopping made simple.

  • One thing I would like to learn is what's a better option for rubbish bags other than using the thin woolies/Coles bag which I usually use all the time.

I just shop once in a while at Coles and get about 10 bag from them otherwise majority of my shopping is done Aldi/costco.

Relatives suggested to use biodegradable bags but all the things I have been reading is that they are not any better than thin plastic bags.

Not adding fuel to the fire but genuinely want to learn a better way.

  • Price, Quality, Services. You can only choose two of these at the same time. Sorry to break this to you. It won't be profitable for anyone to do all three. Well, maybe for some, but not for long, because they end up failing. These retailers exist, but extremely rare.

    Two reasons I dislike Aldi:

    • Pre-packaged fruit and vegetables.
    • no quick isle or self-service for 1-2 items.
    • rubbish website which only lists a handful of items.

Coles/Woolies home brand items are the same price as Aldi items. But with Coles/Woolies you get discounted egiftcards, no credit card surcharge, loyalty rewards so overall Aldi is more expensive.

I think Aldi is for people who does one big weekly shop and don't care or don't have the time to look for and stock up on specials, promotions, egiftcards, reward point bonuses. In that case Aldi will work out cheaper for them.

Aldi is also so much more inconvenient. Limited trading hours, long checkout queues, they have a gate at the entrance discouraging you from browsing, no plastic bags.

Real life example on something 99% of people buy: 2L of milk and a loaf of bread is $2.85 at Aldi. It is also $2.85 at Woolies but after getting 5% off with an egiftcard and 0.5% off with Woolworths Rewards, it will only cost $2.69 at Woolies. Plus at Woolies I get 3 points per dollar on an Amex Platinum Edge, I can shop at 9.30pm and I don't have to queue for a checkout. No brainer really.

      • You also get the free bin-liners (plastic bags) if you have one of the $4 bins from Ikea which they fit perfectly.

        • Yeah but what if I want a jack hammer, table saw or spanner set?

Ok, you see if Bunnings price match their version a week earlier, but anyway, you won't find that at ColesWorth.

        • @D C: Because you don't go to coles or woolworths for tools.

Even for big weekly shop, it is better to do at woolworths. you get 10$ off 150 shop very often, even better if you can catch the evoucher they sell on ebay, at least 16% off shop.

  • I got annoyed at Aldi when I saw a man got asked to open all the zips of his bag as he went to pay. So he opened his main zip in ready to bag the items after they were scanned, but was asked to open all pockets to check, if he stole anything presumably.
All this whilst there was the usual massive line. I don't understand why this company that encourages people to bring their own bags also proceeds to bag check, all whilst slow service and massive lines.

So why don’t you use their click & collect like I do? You just register…

  • ive never really had any issues/ experienced the stuff in your post. the bags are a bit annoying but you get over it. i suppose getting reusable ones is better for the environment too.

it might just be the store you visit?

I have no idea what was OP intention to make such a fuss here. Competitions between supermarkets are always good for customers. If you don't like to shop in Aldi, shop elsewhere. We don't need to care what's the 'Reasons I Dislike blahblahblah'.
For those comparing the $2 milk and 85c bread - remember, those prices WOULD NOT EXIST before Aldi enter the market. Colesworths are forced to sell them cheap to lure back customers. This is a result of competition.

    • I thought the "Milk Wars" were just Coles and Wollies trying to lure us in and walk all the way to the back of the store, to get us to buy other shit at the same time.

They also have the $8 cooked chickens :)

      • Those chickens are $7.90 at Woolies.

        Woo competition!

Woolworths treats its employees like crap.

As someone who worked there for over a decade and saw first hand how they screwed over both employees and customers alike with their dodgy antics, I wouldn't support them in any way.

You guys can't bitch all you like about price-wars, and free garbage bags, but until you've worked for these scum-suckers and see the lack of respect and realize that they really don't care for you as customers, and care even less for their employees - you can't claim any moral high-ground with your rantings here.

  • Aldi isn't always cheaper than woolworths and coles. I see people who "can't be bothered to shop around" say its cheaper but it really isn't. Hence they always complain about not having enough money.

    • Parking usually a nightmare (No quick in and out especially with stand alone stores as they just do the bare minimum to fulfil council requirements)

Why do you drive, you are killing our mother earth. It's your fault.

    • Everyone seems to have over 10 items (feels like a million)

No one goes to Aldi only to buy a handful of items. Your should go to 711. You are disturbing the bulk buy shopping atmosphere in Aldi. It's your fault.

    • The checkout dudes seem to work really slow (or maybe just appears that way as they are seated and don't show sign of urgency)

Why don't you choose a faster lane? It's your fault.

    • No free plastic bags

You are killing our mother earth. It's your fault.

    • Charge extra for VISA/Mastercard (come on guys I am sure you can afford the < 1% fee and I am sure there is plenty of profits to be sent overseas)

Why don't you use cash or debit card? It's your fault.

    • No self checkout (I like them as I don't regard checkout persons as service and would rather have these staff members on the floor helping me find items)

It's not like Coles and Woolies that use machine to cut cost. Aldi is actually treat you as a human and offer human to human interaction. I believe the humane treatment is worth an extra 10 minutes waiting in the queue. It's your fault.

All in all, these rants are all your fault. You are holding it shopping the wrong way!

Most products which I find at Aldi are cheap copycat imitations of major brands.

If Aldi is confident enough in their own home brand products why can't they sell it without imitating the labels .

I'm lazy to go back to to put the trolley back to the bay .

Often they have long queues . Noticed when the Q is getting bigger the check out person press the buzzer for automatic announcement to distract people's attention.

    No plastic bags

Now most of the weekly special electronics only have 1 year warranty. And the quality depends on the batch of products.

Always find Woolies/Coles better with 5percent off egiftcards and woolies is better with reduce to clear specials as coles wait till the last day of expiry to put salads/ meat on half price

I find the odd bunch range in woolies a better bargain.

Only buy from Aldi if I find a bargain

By ti way last weeks catalogue had Listerine mouth wash and Johnson & Johnson's body wash on specials which was a bargain buy .
