I took my family to Kryal Castle recently.
It was lots of fun and the kids loved it.

Proposed to my wife there 20 years ago.
I called them in advance and we arranged for her to be picked from the crowd during the live show and I was to jump out of the crowd and tell them to stop after they tied her to the post to be whipped (they usually used an actress).
I got nervous and was too slow and they lashed her once before I realised what was going on.
Stayed there over night and it was great walking the grounds with a torch at night.

Edit - Thanks for the heads up by the way. We have 6 kids, so this deal is very good value for us.

      I remember that… I snapped a picture as you were proposing…

We went about a year ago… Stayed there the whole day… Make sure you get a schedule of all the shows around the place to make best use of your time there.

I use to live 3km from there and for about 6 years we begged our parents to go. They eventually took us and we were disappointed (circa 1995), never went back. It was built about 1980, had a roaring business for about 1 year and then the banks foreclosed. Westpac owned (could not sell) the place for the next 25 years. Not sure how it is now but for $49 dollars for a family it seems about fair value, just don't expect too much. Sovereign Hill is much more expensive but a much better experience so in terms of value for money I'd say "even". "Blood on the sovereign Cross" is also very good but very expensive.

If you can afford Sovereign Hill then go there, otherwise $49 for Kryal Castle seems like a good deal, just don't expect too much.

P.S. Children under 10 will like Kryal, teenagers will hate it.

    • Will grandma like it? She swears they had castles and knights in the good old days XD

    • It opened in the 70's and Keith Ryall had it up until about 5 years ago. He did have trouble selling it though.

Yep, when i think of Kryal, i think of the raves there. I went there 3 years in a row and they were the best ever. They started in the afternoon and went on until 7am the next day. Those were the days! Shame it got shut down because the locals didn't like the noise

I took a group of families just in June during the Queens Birthday Monday with the Groupon deal (too expensive if without!) and We really enjoyed it!

Yes even though it may seem not enough things to 'do' but in the end the pantomimes and knights display, maze, touture chamber tour, sword fights, browsing a few shops and jousting was really enough to take up our full 10-4pm day!

You will really need to go there with a light hearted attitude to participate as a crowd in the pantomimes and jousting events and seriously you will start to really enjoy it!

Remember, don't miss the pantomimes which start at 11pm sharp and they have different ones that span around the place throughout the day.
Don't miss the knights display and definitely don't miss the jousting!
Lastly, if you got kids, don't miss the sword fighting! Be in it yourself with them and run around waving a sword like 'the Hound' to the kids, and be like a 12yo kid again.

At the end, my kids and I and the other families all enjoyed that day and made some great memories and photos!

By the way, the handcrafted wooden swords are of very nice quality. They are made my a swordcrafter and are used for training for live role plays. You can also buy smaller swords and shields and let your child paint them there too. It was $25 for a wooden sword and shield.

Remember to bring and scarf and beanie in this time of the year. You'll need it!
They also allow byo snacks and food too. I didn't try the wood fired pizza as we didn't have time to even sit down for long as we followed every scheduled event that took place.
