    I checked out some in Chiang Mai. Hotels look only slightly better than backpacker accommodation. No Thanks!!

      You must have stayed in some very nice backpacker accommodation, Peck!
      It was single beds and fan rooms for me when I was backpacking a couple of years back.
      We think AUD 18.49 for a double bed, flat screen TV & A/C in central Chiang Mai is great value for money!

      There are some "premium" locations as well. I've stayed with zen rooms twice and have been satisfied with the locations and the value. I've booked a week in Phuket for an astonishingly low price. Thanks zen rooms.

      What zen rooms does is provide certain standards in so far as amenities. Ok bed, a/c, wifi, etc. they apparently audit the locations and make sure they meet certain standards. I think they do a great job in their niche.

        Thanks. Good to know. Will research. I booked a very cheap flight 700thb return DMK-Phuket for Jan 2018, and later found that it is peak season and hotels are very expensive compared to off peak. Was going to toss the ticket.

      You pay more for that area. Rents much higher. I can't PM you apparently as I am OS. Look at Chow Kit area or there is a gem opposite Pudu Raya now called Pudu Central. I will not mention hotels by name on this forum. I know and adore KL.
