What Do We Get by Sharing Bargains in OzBargain

My title for this post may be very explicit

But I always wonder what do we really get by sharing the bargains other than getting satisfaction of sharing with fellow people

I know there was a topic on this but no direct answers

There are addicts who keep checking this site like Telstar eBay offers recently

There are people who Long for likes or comments and who like to thrash others

But for all the time and effort being spent by fellow ozbargainers what do they really get ?

Let me be more direct
Do they get monetary benefit other than referral wiki?

WE do it for the community. No other reason.

Some do it for ego and referral points.

      Bang on.

There is self interest involved in being part of the community.
We do it for people in the community on the assumption that others in the community will post bargains that we can take advantage of.
There's a thrill when snagging a bargain and there's also a thrill from sharing that joy with others and watching your + votes climb.

I'm not exactly the most productive member of the community in terms of posting deals, but when I do, I really try to curate them by editing the OP with more info from comments and responding to queries in the comments.

      • +1

Yep, + to what u said.

      • +2

I do it for multiple reasons, like scuba coles and the OP mentioned.

Sometimes I get a reply which alerts me to a deal that can be even better. (eg for a little bit more there's a faster data card)

Other times, I've seen replies that alert me to ways to combo the bargain that I didn't know of. (eg cashback competition on a MFC; cashback started the month after I bought the MFC but covered purchases made in the 2 months before hand)

Sometimes the replies alert me to related items I might be interested in getting as well.

Oh and no, I don't get some other form of incentive etc like a payment somehow else.

Another reason to post a good deal, is to try and help a business that gives good deals, stay in business; that way we all benefit.

      Amaysim referral credits.

      Those are sooo 2015! 😏

      • Not really. You still get $10 credit for each referral. Check the Amaysim deals. You can see some people try harder than others ;)

  • +47

i do it because other OzB homies have really helped myself and others by taking time out of their day to post a steal. i guess thats why this is a community….remember that this originally started off as a bargain forum….i think Scotty is the OG that started it all.

How can I get a timepass?

  • +34

9 years ago, Ozbargain started out as a time waster for me, then it became a hobby, then 'worsened' into an addiction. There is no tangible reward for the 9 years worth of stuff I post on here.

Though now it's different, my addiction is my full time job and I'm loving it :)

  • A fat wallet.

I've had some good deals because of this site, so when I see something the community might benefit from, I'd submit it if no one else has already.

    • +1

I'd submit it if no one else has already.

Before or after you've exploited it as much as possible? 🤔

  • +17

Because i enjoy it? I would check Woolworths specials anyway so may as well post.

but what motivates you to put so much detail vs bullet points

  • +17

You need some more options like "to help others" and "because I crave the positive response/bragging rights". I've got some great bargains, and associated bragging rights, on a few bargains through Ozbargain. The typical reaction of people when I tell them about the Virgin around the world business class airfare is "how did you get onto that".

The things I've learned from Ozbargain are:
    a) People do go out of their way to help others and all they ask in return is postive feedback.
    b) There are some people who are just trolls.
    c) People have different views on what constitutes a bargain.
    d) Some people are really hilarious and this can be done in such a way that it does not denigrate others.
    e) There are some truly bonkers products being made out there. (e.g. that suit).

  • +8

what a terrible poll - options 2 and 4 are the same, and both unnecessary

People post deals for the community. I would post after me and my friends got ours. I would rather the ozb community dry up a good deal than the general public.

    • To be fair (unless that was an edit), the post/poll options were created based off of OP saying:

other than getting satisfaction of sharing with fellow people

Re the poll options it feels like the post was designed more to leading discussion in one direction rather than actually asking a broader question.

      • So this poll/thread is almost a loaded question.

I have gotten a lot of good discounts from this community, it has saved me literally thousands on things I was going to spend on (and also impulse discretionary spend too).

I have never made any money from posting on here, the few deals I have posted are because I want to pay back what I can to the community. This is what makes OzBargain great.

I'm surprised that all your answers in the poll are selfish ones.

  • +4

If you're expecting something in return for posting a bargain then you're doing it wrong.

There are a select few who care more about the deal than us; users who do it for the 100+ vote badges + attention and it's very obvious who those users are.

  • +5

    this is OzBargain.

sometimes I see a "bargain" and post it and then some will neg it and say "cheaper here" and I'm not upset by that at all (as long as it's a legit cheaper price i.e. not 2% cheaper) as this is a bargain site.

i post bargains hoping it encourages other to post bargains which will benefit others (and myself). ozbargain karma wheel

As other have said, I've scored some awesome deals and learnt so much about being smarter with my money.

Selfish bugger… It's give and take mate. Without people posting deals on the site it would be nothing. The members of the community benefit from the deals posted on the site, so it's only fair that when they find a deal, they post it too.

Help a sis or bro out

  • +4

Like a lot of people have mentioned, it's the community.

Ozb has given me the opportunity to score good bargains and if I come across something, I totally want to share it too. I feel that it's a completly natural impulse.

Like you're with friends discussing the latest book or movie and someone tells you about the a film or a story that is really good and you feel like sharing something they might not have heard of.

Or you're with mates fishing/surfing and one of them tells you of a really good spot. The next time you discover a great spot, you feel good about being able to share.

Is it natural for some folks to keep something to themselves even if sharing wouldn't cost them a thing?

    • Or you're with mates fishing/surfing and one of them tells you of a really good spot. The next time you discover a great spot, you feel good about being able to share.

Except if you shared it on OzBargain there'd be a gazillion grommets there tomorrow and they'd be sold out of water.

  • We all get to make Scotty richer.

It is a community and unlike how I thought the internet would work, in Australia there is one major dominant website for each category. At one point Buckscoop was in the running and then the tipping point came and it was all over, red rover.

    • But what does Ozbargain get from us sharing bargains in Ozbargin?

Haha I occasionally start thinking about all the opportunities that could be had from just using our voting data alone, with the right analysis and sales tactics it's probably worth a fair bit.

  • +7

I loved the early days of Buckscoop and OzBargain. The community was made up of many posters and fewer readers. I'd create posts because I wanted to give back.

But now the OzBargain community has changed. There's way too many readers + too many trolls. If I post something that's 50% discount or more its most likely to be snapped up by a single reader who buys all of the stock immediately for making a profit.

Today the most popular voted bargains are the safer deals like a 5-10% discount on Apple, Google, Sony, eBay products. Stuff that doesn't get snapped up or hoarded by 1 person and posts which are less of a headache for the OP.

The days of true bargains (50% or less) has disappeared. I see it as if you want to spoil a bargain then announce it on OzBargain.

What Do We Get by Sharing Bargains in OzBargain

      A: Unnecessary competition.

  • Pretty well covered by other posts but if no one posted how would we hear about so much of this. So if I hear about a bargain, I share it so others can benefit in the same way.

I wouldn't rush to share something I figure others will already be posting - don't have to be the first.

  • As others have alluded to, to pay back the community for all of the benefits that I have received.

  • +1

I like to talk to my friends on here but that's about it although I'm noticing like Facebook it's wasting too much of my time lol

  • +1

Post enough and you might get member of the month 😉

  • +4

Your four questions are insufficient. There are two canonical works regarding the advantages of altruism, one 2000 years old, "The Sermon on the Mount", and the other more recent, called "The Selfish Gene", which is basically the sermon on the mount from a first, rather than third person perspective and quantified.
I do it because I am part of a society, and the rewards are vaster than merely those of monetary advantage, including a herd immunity against shonks and charlatans, the ability to support and reward community minded companies, a reasonably robust way of bench-marking prices and popularity, a genuinely community based consumer assessment group with a well educated and experienced pool of shonky/bullshit spotters and astroturfer finders, and some of the most entertaining and amusing debates and troll [in the original and worthwhile UseNet sense, not the nordic bridge-dwelling AOL-spawned mutation is became] threads available on the 'Nets/

I need a university degree to read and understand that

      • +2

There'll be a cheap one along in a short while.

  • literally every other bargain that you didn't post or more specifically every bargain you learnt about from ozb, its either this or everyone hoardes their bargains and posts them on their random un-findable tumblr or whatever and no one gets any eneloops

  • Because I hate Geriatric Harvey of the Harvey Norman. Anything that will steer business away from him is worth doing. ;-)

  • I do it for good karma. Also ozbargain has provided me with some great deals so I want to give back in whatever way I can whenever I can.

    • +1

I do it for good karma.

How does karma work and where can I make a withdrawal?

      • It works in a similar fashion to a student loan here.

  • If everyone had the mentality of "giving back to society" and not just taking, we'd all benefit as a whole. I'm not very good with posting deals (people are just too quick!) but I try whenever the opportunity presents itself!

    • I think if you're making the effort to pos a good deal (or neg appropriately) you are giving back in a way, even if you dont get to take advantage of the deal itself.

  • +1

To squeeze every dollar I can out of this capitalist society.

  • +2

I feel indebted to the OzBargain from all the awesome stuff i find here and the savings I made when I find something on here I actually need. The trouble I have is finding a deal to pay back the community but there is always someone on here quicker than me.

    • +5

I wouldn't worry about that as long as somebody covers the deal. You can still provide useful information by commenting if you know about the quality of the goods or services.

      • Good point.

        • +3

greenpossum is bang on. As it is with most forums, its all about sharing information and insights. The more honest and accurate information we can get the better we choices we can make. You can't really trust people's reviews on various review sites, some are paid to write positive reviews even if the item is complete rubbish.

I generally feel the OzBargain community here doesn't tend to give people BS responses and its made up of quite a few smart individuals.
Also, the fact that contributors don't tend to get a monetary reward other than the satisfaction of helping folks out gives me more reassurance that most responses are generally honest.

Plus with us all clustering up in a group like this, we gain some consumer power. People here can use offers posted here to price match at other stores. Personally I hate paying RRP, well knowing that its probably marked up by 50%-100%. I totally get that retailers need to turn a profit and all, I just don't like to be the one paying for it.

        • @Hikko: Well said.

  • To be honest….i was quite thrift in spending money in Australia as everything was too expensize but after ozbargain……I have been spending more than usual and prices starting to make sense again.

    Never turn back ever since the material/service gain ^_^;

    plus

Sharing is Caring…..this is what my good friend told me :)

  • Yeah i think its good that a deal gets posted and the feedback the op gets back, but what annoys me are the phamtom leechers who probably dont have an account and that smash the deals! Esp on ebay where you can see when the purchases are made.. doesnt coorelate with likes received.

  • You scratch my back…

    • I'll enjoy it then not reciprocate?

Every badge I get on my account I add to my resume

I feel like its a fight against corporate greed in some instances, and at other times, it helps boost the guys who are trying to be competitive.

To me, OzBargain has got nothing to do with saving money, and I am sure I am not the only one who feels this way.

  • +2

I have tried on a few occasions to post bargains I come across (only to find out someone has already submitted one before me). My reasoning being I have enjoyed plenty of deals from this site and wish to give something back - however useful it might be. If only one other person found it useful, then I feel that's an accomplishment already. Deals don't have to hit 100+ upvotes to be good. Someone else just has to benefit from it, in my opinion.

    • Every so often I get a private message from a lurker detailing their appreciation for one of my comments.

So our contributions have more utility than for what we receive credit. :)

  • +2

I do it for the points/upvotes/feedback. Feels good man.

Same reason why I also use Reddit as well.

  • Considering many people these days drive their lives based on Likes/Faves/Follows, OzBargain is one of the more useful ones! Actually useful community sense (*) that helps people. I have certainly benefited from many bargains on here. Still have to use common sense as a lot of posts aren't bargains either, not that I blame the poster either cos you never know!

(* except for the growing number of selfish people who lurk for broden)

If you exercise common sense though like ensuring you get what you want first, esp for suspected price errors.

  • "satisfaction of sharing with fellow people"
