  • The Cathay sale is better. Well for Feb.

    • @Turd: how often Cathay do this kinda sale for Feb / around CNY? better to book the flights now you reckon?

      • Once a year.

I checked and in 2016 they had one and in 2017 they also had one, ~June.

        Yes book now.

I got flights for around CNY for ~$850

        • whattt!!! $850! that's super cheap.
Will book now then. Thanks for the hint btw.

        • @tulalit: superhint use I want that flight to dot com to book :)

        • @Turd: Thanks!!! Yes I've been using that site too to compare :)

  • Is there an option to structure a stop over on the way there? E.g. fly to Beijing and stop over at HK for 5 days or so, then Beijing->HK->Sydney, and still be able to take advantage of this special.

    • +1

I'm not sure but just try entering your dates into the multicity search and see….

    • try using a travel agent. they did this for me last time (on Cathay which always stops over in HK).

      • I would rather book it myself via expedia so you can additional cashback (especially if you book both flights + hotel separately). Of cos assuming the prices on expedia are similar to what you get with agent/direct.

      • Cathay do this for free over the phone. Great service. Qantas charge.

Adding stopover in HK almost doubles the price.

        • do you mean you can still get cashback from cashrewards if you book with Cathay directly via phone??

  • $600 direct flight the cheapest, good price.
I am tempted in Oct journey.

  • SQ is only $450 to China

  • What i find interesting is, the farthest one is the cheapest one.

Is it because of tax, like airport tax or government funding or something?

Is airfare nowadays still based on the distance you travel?

    • -1

I think it's because of different airport taxes for different countries…and the "rent" that the airlines have to pay at each airport is also different…

    • +1

Airfare pricing is an extremely complex business that often has little to do with distance.

In this case, it's probably useful to remember that Qantas only relaunched their SYD-PEK route at the beginning of this year and I assume they're still trying to capture market share from the various Chinese airlines that also service the route.

  • It seems it is slightly cheaper than Cathay depending on where you travel to in Asia. For me it is cheaper as planning a trip to Shanghai.
