  • Why did they have to make it half glossy!

    • +1

Hate glossy finger print and scratch showing consoles

    • +1

The whole (piano black) gloss fad that has gone on for years (on TVs and laptops and…) has been a very, very, very dark time for electronics. The crappiest silliest reflective distracting fingerprinty slippery ugliest surfaces known to man.

Anyway, my understanding is that Microsoft tried to have a consistent look for both the original Xbox One and Xbox 360 E, hence the crappy design on both. So that 'crappy design language' was shared between the two units. PS3 wasn't much better.

My Xbox 360 E (I only bought an XBOX when the E version was released) had a rough "scratch patch" on the front of the unit straight from the factory, so I am not impressed with the quality control either. IFIXIT (the website) had their unit with some missing silver paint on the xbox lettering. Not good!

At least the internals are OK, which is what matters. But I don't care to look at the ugly black box.

      • I'm glad that the fad is slowly going away and that companies are finally realising that these surfaces are nothing but a nuisance to consumers.

Personally, it's never made any sense to me to include these on gaming consoles when a majority of users will be kids.

        • Profile of a gamer in Australia is very different to what you might think, and probably more so on the xbox

        • +3

The average age of someone playing video games is 31. Kids certainly aren't the majority.

        • "A majority of users are kids".

I don't often buy second hand consoles but when I do, they are rarely in great condition or at least appear that they've been looked after by an adult. The used games market is even worse.

  • +1

Tempted to buy one to keep as backup. Decisions, decisions…

    • THe E variant is missing the Toslink port.

  • +3

tempted to buy one just so i can play fable 2

    • +1

      such a good game!

      • Never played it - love 1, hated 3. Heard 2 was amazing but its only on Xbox always been a playstation/PC person

    • +4

Heads up incase you weren't aware, Fable II is backwards compatible with Xbox One.

    • +2

Fable 2 and 3 are great. Hopefully a new one soon. Fable Fortune looks decent as a spinoff card thing.

  • +1

I remember buying this 3 years ago with batman arkham origins for $99. Good times.

    • Still haven't finished that game…

      • Lol, just finish it, it's actually a really fun game, and was an underrated gem.

        • +3

Hardly underrated, the Batman trilogy (Asylum, City, Origins) are highly praised except for the huge technical issues regarding Origins that were so bad it resulted in it being pulled from sale on Steam for a few weeks. Definitely checkout Asylum/City though they're great.

        • @Agret:
Oh yeah, ik what you mean, i was just talking about the console versions. I even loved the multiplayer, one of my all time favourites.

        • +1

Was origins pulled from steam? I thought that was Arkham Knight which had the major issues on PC.

I cloaked origins on my PC and was fine actually didn't have major issues.

  • In hindsight would buy this and not worry with xb1.

    • +1 considering virtually the only exclusive games you can get on XB1 are backwards compatible titles.

      • I missed out on the XB360 gen by having a ps3, I bought an XB1 and missed out on the PS4 rise :| lol I will say the controller > ps

  • still in thinking the use scenario on this good machine.

    • Possible media center of sorts? I'm sure you can re-flash these if you dont want games? Something I've never looked into but at this pricepoint im gonna have a search myself.

      • +2

As far as I know the E consoles have the exploit fixed and you can't jtag/rgh them. Even still a hacked 360 isn't very good for media playback, better off with a Xiamoi TV for cheaper and would be able to handle way better media than the 360 ever could due to hardware decoding chips.

        • I concur!

        • Even the original (2001) Xbox would be better than this, and will run Xbox media center, XBMC now known as Kodi. You won't get it to play h265 or FHD movies, though.

        • There are two models of E's. The first batch had corona boards and can be RGH'ed fine. It was the later ones with Winchester boards that cannot be exploited.

All 500gb models are Winchesters or manufactured after 2014.08.14

        • +1

@RedHab: XBOX is a bit too long in the tooth, considering it's limited to VGA/RCA output for the $50 you spend buying one you are better off with an android box still as they can playback H264,H265,FHD,4K no worries due to it all being handled with hardware decoding and have HDMI output. The CPU in the XBOX struggles to do divx 720p and h264 is unwatchable.

      • -1

        Possible media center of sorts?

All consoles consume more power than alternatives (ie. dedicated DVD player, Blu-Ray player, media players, USB port in TV, etc). If you want to watch movies often, there are far more efficient alternatives. The alternatives don't have to bathe your home in microwaves too, as they do via the RF module in the xbox 360 (even if you don't use wifi, it's running).

    • Netflix.

    • I still use mine as my media centre as plex/youtube work fine among other apps.

  • Still thinking what i am going to do with the one i have locked away?

  • +1

AFAIK you can no longer use the 360 as a Media Center Extender with Windows 10(?), they dropped the Foxtel app, and there is no Stan app either.

It does have Netflix, YouTube, and Plex though.

As others have said, I guess it could be mainly used as a backup or for playing older games?

    • Can be used as your main console for now if you don't mind waiting for the Xbox One X or aren't as interested in the games on the One. I'd rather have 2 or 3 360s than a One or One S that'll be almost as obsolete by the end of the year.

      • The One/One S won't be obsolete from the One X. It won't have exclusive games and all releases have to be compatible with the One/OneX

      • I'd rather have 2 or 3 360s than a One or One S that'll be almost as obsolete by the end of the year.

What is your definition of 'obsolete'?
        https://www.kotaku.com.au/2017/06/the-xbox-one-x-will-cost-6…

Xbox One X: minimum double the price of the One S (and can be expected to attract a premium for some time)
Xbox One X: games still have to be backward compatible with One and One S
Xbox One X: not all games will be full 4K: that's up to the developer to decide.
Xbox One X: probably won't get 10%-20% of the sales of the vanilla console at these prices.

So it all comes down to your definition of obsolete.
Remember to enjoy the RF module and Wi-Fi, for best health.

        • Can't let the WIFI thing go huh?

        • Can't let the WIFI thing go huh?

Seems you cannot. Which is why you responded mere hours ago. And presumably don't care to 'let go' of the RF module and wi-fi module of the console.

Thanks for keeping the topic alive. Letting go of wi-fi is easy, but don't forget the RF module, bro. No need to have the health of people around you suffer just so some NSA collaborator can spy on you and bathe you in microwaves. And damage your sperm. Mum would not approve.

        • doubled-up

        • @cheepwun:

I really hope you're just trolling because otherwise you honestly do need medical help.

        • @syousef:
A search on wi-fi sperm will answer your question. Enjoy the experiment. Starring you. Meanwhile, I'll try to find a doctor…which I haven't needed for most of my life. I could use some taxpayper-funded drugs.
          https://www.google.com.au/search?q=microsoft+nsa+kinect+pris…

        • @cheepwun:

Thanks. If I ever decide to father another child, I'll remember not to ejaculate into a cup and put it under a WIFI enabled laptop for 4 hours before using it on my partner. I'll also be sure not to confuse it with the sample I collected from the nearest rat.

People like you amaze me. You're overly suspicious or downright dismissive of every mainstream finding you can get your hands on. But the moment a small study confirms your fears in even the most outlandish experimental settings you believe them without question.

There are more recent articles from another bout of this in 2015, but this madness went viral in 2011. Here is a Time Magazine article goes into this a bit from back then.
          http://healthland.time.com/2011/11/30/are-wi-fi-enabled-lapt…

        • Time Magazine is one of the greatest truth-tellers. A history of people on its covers shows they are nothing but truth-seekers looking after you.

          As are its owners.

No need to answer again. Make your decisions, move on. I'll keep posting my outlandish ignorant propaganda, regardless. Do you see any parallels to the past?

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpwcF3Malj8
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4i6kADXfxE

The various vested interests will go back-and-forth while you blindly accept what it is you've been fed. As your life ticks on. I have made my decision, thanks. Seen enough proof, thanks. Don't fancy looking back in 20 years knowing I can't reverse my actions.

    • +1

I still run Windows 7 on my server just so I can use my 360's as extenders - still works fine :) Still waiting for something that actually works better!

      • Yeah it's a great setup - pity they got rid of it.

Have you looked at Fetch? You can have a Fetch Mighty doing all the recording. and then have a Fetch Mini (which has the exact same interface etc) in another room access the recordings that are on the Mighty.

        https://fetchtv.com.au/support/multiroom

        https://www.fetchtv.com.au/pdf/Multiroom_user_guide.pdf

        • Yes, I'm waiting for when they get it fully working before I switch to fetch. I spoke with them directly, the person I spoke to said they are going to basically have a similar setup to an extender - i.e. you'll eventually be able to bring up a guide on the Fetch Mini, and have it stream live TV via a Fetch Mighty. I hope they really do that :)

EDIT - Holy moly, looks like they've finally released it with this functionality. Unfortunately though it says "You can have up to 3 Fetch TV boxes on your account", I need 5 of them :(

  • +3

Got 2 of them when they were on special before. I think I paid $97. As far as I'm concerned you have to factor in a 2nd hand hard disk, and then you have to deal with choosing between the pesky 4GB and the hard drive, but if you want a new Xbox (who cares about the drive so long as it's not failing) this is one way to go..

    • You can copy games to USB. I think 32gb max, depending on OS version.

      • You can attach external hard drives, I use a 1TB drive with my 360.

        • On the Xbox One and One S that uses USB3 external drives can actually be faster than internal.
On the Xbox 360 you're stuck with USB2. External is much slower.

        • @syousef: USB2 is still fast enough. Games on the X360 are a lot smaller on average than the XB1. If you don't want to play games from external, you can archive games to it from the internal to free up space. But from my experience games load and play fine from a USB attached HDD.

        • @sallan75:

My experience moving Games with Gold games off onto external hard drive is that there is a marked effect on load times.

  • +3

Would be nice if the ps3 was this price. Lots of good games on that console.

    • +1

And not only that, but they are also PS3 exclusive!

What about the 500 THz emanating from the Sun?

      • does it pulse rapidly? I love the sun.

        • That's relative.
It's higher frequency than rf, but less than X-ray.

    • +1

Do you watch Youtube videos about internal combustion engines that run on water as well?

    • LMFAO

    • Lol you must be the most paranoid guy ever outdoors

    • Those low power 2.4GHz wave couldn't even penetrate your skin. The broadcast television and radio signals are far stronger than your Xbox and are still nothing to worry about.

        • Could it possibly be someone who will come in and do readings to confirm that the Wi-Fi “does not exceed FCC limits?

I work in a school and we use off the shelf cisco wireless access points, they meet the world standards and won't exceed any broadcast limits. Unless that school is using some non-standard broadcast tower thing that they've amped the power up massively it's fine.

The official told me the goal was “to blanket” every corner of the school in Wi-Fi.

At my school they do this by installing multiple access points in each building so that the school has coverage, sounds like the article writer mistakes this as some sort of broadcast tower.

For example one WAP we use is the CISCO 1252 and looking at the data sheet for it the max broadcast power is 23 dBm (200 mW). I think you are focusing your attention on the wrong problem, this is very very low amount of transmission power that won't effect you at all. If you are worried about radiation you should be more concerned about mobile phone base stations blanketing the area, walking under/near overhead power lines, TV/radio transmissions as all of these are multiple magnitudes greater than a humble wi-fi signal. If you were to put your head against the wi-fi router it would take you a little bit over a year to receive as much radiation as you get from a 20 minute phone call on a mobile phone.

    Can this model be rgh'd

    • +2

      install xkey much better

      • +2

Not really unless you want it for online
        Also can be rgh,d

        • Any info about how to do so

        • @azza9000:

Don't bother with rgh, you need to open the console and solder wires, definately a job for the experts.

Xkey would be more of an attempt with your experience I'm guessing.

        • +2

          @azza9000:

Just reread up on it and found out it has to be a corona motherboard and not a winchester wich it probably would be if so wont able to do it not even a xkey will be instalable looks like Microsoft one the war on this one

          @stussy

This model would be almost certainly be a Winchester motherboard and cannot be RGH'ed which also prevents the use of an xkey (no method for dvd key extraction).

There are still some games that can't play on a 4gb console as they require mandatory HDD installs. These include:

    Battlefield 4
    Call of Duty: Ghosts
    Call of Duty: Advance Warfare
    Destiny
    Far Cry 4
    Grand Theft Auto V
    Halo 4
    Halo Reach
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
    Mortal Kombat X
    Plants VS Zombies: Garden Warfare
    Shadow of Mordor
    The Evil WIthin
    Titanfall
    Watch_Dogs
    Wolfenstein: The New Order

    • +7

      USB External hard drive

    • The Forza games also need a HDD install if you want to be able to access all of the cars and tracks available in the game. They have a dedicated install disk.

    • did a quick search and found this internal 120gb one for $28.42 https://www.ebay.com.au/i/371541113485?chn=ps&dispItem=1 but having to buy one and some games kills it unless you want it as a backup or media streamer

  • Thanks OP.
I got one just in case I get the rrod. Too many great games to re-live someday and xenia progress is really slow.

  • +2

Good price, but I scored one from this deal Xbox 360 500 GB + 2 Games $99
