I've recently noticed more and more drivers turning off their engines at red lights, or even when traffic is slightly congested. I always thought it's a myth and it actually consumes more power and petrol to restart the car. Do you do it and if so, why?

Well, apparently we live in the old world. I was pretty shocked to discover such a thing went under my tech radar…
@sagitox I know you're from some backwater country, but some clever people in first world countries have proven the automatic start stop system saves fuel and daytime running lights save lives.

Some competitor brands claim a fuel consumption reduction of 0.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the combined cycle test following the addition of stop-start technology.
so about $0.30 per 100km. drive ~1300km so save for a latte.
Those stop-start systems might be ok for auto driving pussies and women but blokes changing gears themselves vote a whole hearted "no thanks".
How is it related to changing gears?
And which blokes do you represent? My car's manual and has this start/stop feature, it activates when you're in neutral with your foot on the clutch. I wasn't a fan of it at first and kept turning it off, now I don't really care and just let it do it's thing. It has made a noticeable difference to my fuel consumption.
Acting as though a fuel saving feature like this somehow detracts from your masculinity is kinda sad.
Its a stop start system built into modern cars to save fuel, it's fully automatic when enabled.
It's automated to reduce wear, pollution and increase fuel economy.
from now on, i wont stare at the drivers as if there is a problem while i am waiting/crossing on the lights.
i hate it. the a/c turns off when engine shuts down. takes too long to get back into motion when the light changes.
What car do you have?
Mazda seems to be quite ahead in this system. Everything works as normal when myen activates, I hardly notice it has, only downside to it is when you want to fang it when the lights turn green. One noticeable feature in the start stop system is when you're sitting out the lights with it disabled and the lights won't change you simply engage it and the lights change to green like magic. Handy.
Pretty funny at traffic lights when turning cars start the engine, creep forward 2 metres then wait for pedestrians and the engine stops again. I wonder if these cars will be a nightmare in 20 years time when starting isn't as reliable.
I just read this after commenting below. See my comment, Bluemotion sucks!
This nig must of been living under a rock for the last 5 years 😂
When I first heard that engine start stop from the neighbouring car at the red lights I knew it was a car feature, but didn't really knew that people are actually stopping their engine at the red lights (non start stop engines) instead of a very bad traffic jammed/accident incident. Guess there is no poll option of I knew about the start stop technology.

I always do it
Hopefully 26 people know that there are some cars which has the start stop system option out there.111
I've noticed others doing it, but have never done it myself
111 people are not aware of the start stop system and did the right thing not to copy as its a motor vehicle feature.56
I have no idea what you're talking about
56 people have mostly their music/radio blasting when drivingSo….is there anybody actually copied the idea on a non start stop car? without knowing its automated. Hopefully nobody has a start stop….stop (engine dead) incident on the red lights.
Here are the list of start stop vehicle manufacture from wikipedia

I can't be bothered to read all of the comments but it does look like an interesting thread.
I just want to say this stop-start technology is a bit of political BS and I'm not convinced it helps the car, the driver or the environment.I have a VW Touareg with "Bluemotion" but I can't stand this feature. Whenever you come to a stop it kills the engine, even when giving way to turn at an intersection with heavy traffic! I don't trust this situation as I would like to have complete control of the engine.
Yes you can temporarily turn it off after starting the car with a push of the button but it resets to the default setting of on everytime you turn off the ignition/get out of the car. I asked VW how to leave the setting to off with every restart but it cannot be done! Bloody frustrating and it's come as a reflex action to push the off button on the "auto-off" after I start the car every time.
After much thought the only explanation I can think of for this stupid setting is to meet fuel-consumption regulations (yes, especially VW!) by having the Bluemotion on in the default setting every-time. While it seems very reliable and quick to turn back on every time I just don't trust it and don't feel comfortable/safe turning at a busy intersection with the engine off.
The worst is when coming to a stop for a reverse park, I'm sure this doesn't save fuel by turning off the engine for half a second!
There are ways to disable it permanently, with the use of a VCDS cable to do some programming into the system (a quick google should turn up some info and whther it works for your particular model). I just manually turn it off in the wife's car when I start up.
Can companies like this feature because it helps with the fuel consumption numbers, so I think we will be stuck with it.
A couple of things;
An oil expert — he was actually a biochemist — once told me that we are wasting time warming up modern cars in cold weather because the oils are now designed to give maximum protection from start up. He said if you wait to warm up, you are wasting time and money, same with auto restart.
A good thing about stop/start is, it will (hopefully) stop people from stopping short at red lights, then creeping ip 1m 10 seconds later, then doing it again. Pick you spot behind the car in front and stop. Much better for the car and less stressful for other motorists/motorcyclists.
@whooah1979: Very important for cardrivers etc. to notice motorbikes. Very scary in Bangkok when taxis pull up and you go to open your door and a motorbike comes up on your inside. It is only a matter of time before my first 'dooring'.
