How to Get Back at a Company?

Hey guys wondering what the best way to get back at a company is. Basically story is I bought a new product from an online company from the US. Before buying it i emailed them specifically asking if the product be compatible and work with my headunit. They then responded that it would work.

Product then doesn’t work. I go back and forth with the company for a month, still doesn’t work. I lodge a credit card chargeback etc no luck and can’t get a refund. I then post up a few threads/video of it not working and see a lot of other people who exactly have the same issue.

Anyway looking to get back at the company and willing to spend money to do it. At the moment all I can think of is making a website and fill it with testimonials from people of it not working and videos etc proving it. Is there any consumer protection organisation in America I can contact?

Cheers

How does getting back at the company help you progress in life?

All of this time (and money) you're investing into this is resources you could be using to better yourself and increase your wealth.

If its a huge company I doubt you'll make much of a dent and the fact you are posting about it in a public forum means that whatever you do could be potentially traced back to you anyway.

Be the bigger person and realise life isn't always fair.

    You win by moving on.

Smallish company, not going to lie doing it mainly for the satisfaction of getting them back but also if can stop more people losing money then that’d be good too (already stopped a few people buying it from my posts).

EDIT: Also forgot to add in the OP that they lied to me before i bought it saying it would specifically work with my particular headunit. It's the fact that they lied to me saying they knew it would work which pisses me off.
So at this point yeah I can walk away with 0 effort and just cop the loss but then how does that stop the company doing it more to other people?

I disagree Jules - sometimes a small amount of effort by a wronged customer can make a very big difference to a company's bottom line. If a customer can bring this about without going off the deep end and becoming consumed by revenge why shouldn't they extract a cost to a company that is knowingly doing the wrong thing? You don't want to be a doormat to someone trying to screw you.

      • but how does that help you in the long run?

        • +13

If you trip over something would picking it up help in the long run since you already walked past it? No, you could just keep walking and it'd save you time and effort. However some would see a moral obligation to use your time to pick it up so the next person doesn't trip over it even though it doesn't benefit you at all.
Companies only act when there are complaints/consequences to their actions. If a bully can bully somoene without any consequences are they going to stop?

          @Clinton:

Thats a very fair answer. The only question I had was the justification for it.

If your morals dictate you want to intervene to help others, then all the more power to you.

If your motive is simply to inflict harm on another as revenge, I would suggest against it as you could end up in an even worse situation depending on your methods.

        • @Jules_d1:
I agree with you, you don't want to go off on the deep end and lose perspective. But on the other hand, I don't think you want to underestimate the value and utility of appropriate revenge. If you want people to treat you well, they need to understand that there are consequences to treating you badly. So even if you never deal with the company again, extracting a proportionate amount of revenge is, I think, good for your self worth. But again, you don't want to get caught up in it.

  • Make an "I hate xxxxxxx" facebook page

    • A friend of a friend did this about a certain car manufacturer (she bought a new car and it was a total lemon), and after a year the page was HUGE. They changed their tune and offered her a refund and thousands of extra dollars to close the page. So sometimes this works.

  • Let it go.

let it go, can't hold me back anymore

Do they have facebook page? You can post your complain there. At least other people can see it and think twice when they want to buy from them.

    • I think they've deleted their fb page (that or they blocked me).

    Keep mailing them things from

Just upload a youtube video explaining what your wanted it do. How it doesn't work as you expected and put the model number and company name in the title.

Don't make any accusations just state the truth and when people go google searching for the product they will hopefully learn this product isn't suitable.

I had a juicer and did this. The company eventually agreed to refund as the video clearly showed the design fault. They then asked me to remove the videos and I said no..

Lots of comments have thanked me for helping avoid a costly error after they did a google search.

Just be sure you don't put accusations or get personal. just the facts and you should be fine.

Glad that you stuck to you principles, refusing to take the videos down, it was definitely the right to keep them up to inform potential new customers.

Yeah i did that from the start and showed them to prove it wasn't working. They didn't care so i then posted it on alot of forums. It's a pretty niche product so not alot of people would search up for it.

if you're serious about on-going smear campaign
    1 create a domain <xxxscammedme.com>
    2 setup a facebook/twitter account
3 start posting how terrible they're customer experience was.
4 buy google adwords, bing ad, facebook ad redirecting to your blog/facebook

    probably most effective one.
5 hire a lawyer in USA, start a litigation process.

I know how OP feels - never use "AA City Removalists" in Sydney.
    You have been warned

    • noted.

  • Consumer protection organisation is better business bureau, but they are a toothless tabby cat.

I would send your complaint to The Consumerist, they have a reputation for going after such companies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumerist

Revenge is a dish best served cold
So I'd wait 20 years or so stewing in my own hate ,
and until they have direct flights to the US city company is based ,
then hide in the bushes stalking the company directors til the time was right
Then go all Pulp fiction with a Bible quote ect
….. fill in extreme revenge fantasy here…..

  • Ahh the love of google research before you buy
If not sure ask questions with other people that have it of course the seller is goin to say yes half the time why because he wants to sell the product

    • +1

The product was a new product so no past history. If i was smart i would of waited for other people to buy it first but the re-assurance from them that it'd work and a preorder discount made it tempting. Lessons learnt.

      • We all make mistakes in the long run is try avoiding them unfortunately we have to move on but some good answers above hopefully you will get what you want all the best

I don't know if it is illegal to do this?
But I can't see why not.

Firstly: Create a document that contains nothing but a Black Image over the entire page. You can create 1 page, (and send it multiple time) or a 1000 page document. (the sky is the limit here).

Second: Work out the time difference of the country's "Close of Business" time.

Third: (I should have started with this) Find their FAX number.

Lastly: Fax the document multiple times so that it starts printing (when no-one would be in attendance).

I know that it is a petty thing to do, but, you will get the satisfaction that they will find (possibility) 1000's of black documents in the morning, and will need to refill the Printers inks or cartridges and paper.

I know you won't get your money back (but you knew that already)
    Revenge is sweet.

    • +3

Probably won't work. Most companies have virtual fax machines now where the faxes are redirected to an email account as attachments.

this was relevant about 20 years ago.

    • Your phone company may encourage you do do this.

      • To do or not to do , dis?
