6hrs in Sydney Airport. What to Do?

Have 6 hrs at sydney airport, before flight back to Perth on Tiger.
Anything to do, see, any hints for the 6 hr boredom.?

(I've a week in Sydney in February, to explore the city a lot more then also.)
Thanks

  • Take the train into the city and wander around Darling Harbour.

  • yes go to city and visit darling harbour and opera house.

  • i agree get out of the airport there's a few shops but not much else to do you will be bored stiff after the first hour

    • first hour? @cybapete You are easily amused.
You will be bored stiff after the first 10 minutes.

  • Go on a scavenger hunt for all the "sale" items at the airport shops…send to ozbargain to upload onto Facebook.

Airport shops' sale items are still more expensive than most normal shops!

      • I know, that's the point

Have 6 hrs at sydney airport, before flight back to Perth on Tiger.

You've actually probably got between 8 and 10 hours.
    Blue Mountains?

  • Internet cafe. Play games? That or find a buffet or yum cha for me haha lol if it is open.

Collect discarded trolleys from arrivals and sell them to departures passengers

    • Could supplement the flight cost and have spending money. Good idea.

Go shopping. Spray yourself with perfume testers at the counters. Eat some yummy hot food and surf the net -maybe OzBargain and read the forums lol Charge your devices at the power points, read newspapers, magazines, do a crossword.

If you want to leave the airport, go to circular quay and walk to Bennelong Point and take a few snaps.

Print / buy off a bunch of stickers that look like dual power outlets, stick them in various spots throughout the departure terminals, observe ensuing chaos.

  • I wouldn't go into the city, it will cost you about ~$36 by train. Do you have any lounge access? Take a nap, maybe a shower.

Another possibility is if you hanker for a particular cuisine, see if you can find a restaurant you like in a suburb on the 400 line to Burwood (Rockdale, Campsie, etc). This is a normal bus service, no airport surcharge.

    • agree, ozbargainer takes the bus
      :)

      • Take bus to Green Square or Mascot then train to city, that way you still avoid the airport surcharge and doesn't add much time to your travel. Bus 400 as mentioned above.

    • No lounge access unfortunately….unless you know a cheap way to get one for the time I'll be there?

  • you must go to opera house if you haven't been here before

  • Thanks for the suggestions and comments.
I'll walk to Mascot station, the walk will do me good, its a mid afternoon 6 hr wait, no luggage, before the flight to Perth, buy an Opal card, get the train to circular quay. Have a look around and then do the train back to the airport again.
Minimum load on Opal card is $10?

    • Adult Opal card: $10, $20, $40, $50, $60, $80, $100 and $120.

But if you are training back to the airport, you'll pay like $17!

As suggested above, train to Mascot and bus from there to Airport or walk if you prefer.

Whatever's leftover from your opal can be transferred to others anyway or kept for future use.

      • I'm back to Sydney in February for a week of proper touristic sightseeing, so I'll be using it then too as well.
How much for the train into the city? Are they one way fares charged or return?
As far as i understand, it charges the card automatically.?

        • If you tap on/off at Domestic/International Airport, that adds like $13 Airport surcharge on whatever total fee you end up paying.

          So example (just rough numbers):
Domestic Airport to Circular Quay $15 - 20 mins

          Proposed Alternative:
At Domestic Airport take 400 bus to Mascot $2.10 - 15 mins
Walk to Mascot Station - 5 mins
Train from Mascot to Circular Quay $2.36 or $3+ - 15 mins
          Total around $5-6 35mins

As you can see you save $10 one way but it's a bit of hassle if you have bags with you (which in your case you don't). $20 return. If the next tap on after the tap off is within 1 hour, it will be counted as transfer so if you are going to a few stops in the city, try to tap back on within the hour to minimise cost. Also travelling on the train between 7-9am and 4-7pm attract on-peak fee like 20% more.

For topping up opal, you can do at woolies, so make use of your discounted wish then.

Yup when you tap off, that's when the card is automatically charged.

        • @tajid:
Probably be getting on just around or just before 4pm by time get to the train station.
          Thanks for your reply.

@albanyson: No worries. I made a miscalculation above.

          Proposed Alternative:
At Domestic Airport take 400 bus to Mascot $2.10 - 15 mins
Walk to Mascot Station - 5 mins
Train from Mascot to Circular Quay $2.36 less $2 transfer = 36c - 15 mins
          Total around $2-3 35mins

        • @tajid: so of i get off on the return at the domestic airport, I'll still be saving a couple dollars on a $10 Opal card Top up?

        • +1

          @albanyson:

sorry need to be clear with the question, if you get off on the return via train at domestic airport, then you only save $13 from the trip from Mascot to CQ.

if you get off using a bus to domestic airport, you'll be saving another $13 from the return trip.

Basically if you get on/off train from domestic airport, you need to pay $13 more, by finding another way (i.e. bus/walk to Mascot and train to CQ AND back), you end up saving $13, $26 if return.

    • There is a way for cheaper Airport train travel Hack: Sydney Airport Train or Any Train for $3.38

      • +1

I don't think that works anymore. They placed a top up machine inside the train station just before exit so your forced to load up if you don't have on your opal card.

        • Confirmed not working?

        • @albanyson: I don't use my hack myself. I just noticed it when I went on holidays two weeks ago.

  • heres an idea for the op if he wants to stay at the airport.
