        • Those 6 weeks are useless to you anyway — whether it's the first 6 weeks or 6 weeks after 60 days — for hospital cover due to the waiting period.

    • Hi, just wondering with ahm, if you cancel during the cooling off period can you have the money refunded to a different card?

      • sounds like money laundering to me

        • Just trying to reach credit card minimum spends. All cards in my name and not using cash.

I got on ahm on one of their older plans. They've cut a lot of benefits on their newer plans (the lowest)

    1) instead of unlimited ambulance, you are limited to one annually
    2) they don't cover wisdom teeth removal, nor appendix and joints surgery

    Extras:
    1) are now no longer covered for 50%, instead they only cover a set amount (30 something dollar per visit)
    2) xray or dental is not covered
    3) mouthguard not covered

there's a few other minor things.

Still, I like the fact that all their extras are covered under one amount

EDIT: forgot to add they don't cover pregnancy

    • Thanks. Much helpful. Was thinking whether to move from NIB. Anyway decided not to 🙂

      • for coverage of those, you'll have to go the next level up (pregnancy not covered for ANY of their covers). you do get 1100 to spend on extras (combined), but that will take you 5 years to get up to for your loyalty. To be honest though, you'd want some flexibility so that you can move if there are any good deals (to me, a good deal is not free weeks; more of whether they cover MORE things).

I'm only with them because my original cover is really good for what I'm paying.

Just saw NIB basic cover, yeah it covers more than basic ahm. I think Nib is one of the better ones from m past research, looks like they're still decent.

Are you still on their old plan? Or did they make you to change to the new one? Also with the price, will it stay the same or it will increase?

Just remember to check the performance of Ahm:
    http://privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/Insurer/Details/AHM
Under the 'Performance' tab, down the bottom is share of Private Health Industry Ombudsman.

Let's just say it certainly outperforms on complaints and investigations for its size. And not in the good way.

    • AHM=medibank btw.

Might be better to use this AHM deal to get the 6 weeks free + up to 70,000 flybuys points.

    • Flybuys sell a $10 coles voucher for 2000 points.
A single hospital + extras person will be given 30,000 points. That is worth $150 of coles vouchers.

The cheapest monthly hospital + extras single cover is $73/month (in NSW)
Six weeks is about 1.5 months, or $109

Yes you are correct (although if the monthly premium is over $100, you are better off with this offer)

    • You get the flybuy points after 6 months of continuous cover

      • How long do you normally stay covered before leaving/dropping it?

  • I haven't compared their recent packages but the one I am on is great how I can use all the extras allowance on anything. I wear expensive contact lenses so I use most of the extras cover on them.

I wouldn't go anywhere near medibank.

  • hmm 500 dollars excess to pull out a wisdom teeth….. doesn't it usually cost less than that?

    • No. Depends on how difficult the job is, which will depend on the x-ray.

Upper teeth are harder to do than lower teeth, and if the tooth is horizontal, well, you can expect to pay more because that's harder to extract. Could cost over a thousand.

The saving will not be much though.

      • I never really understood the dentist mafia in Australia to be honest. With any trained profession you generally get <$200 / hour, including a psychologist who has to train for 6 years to see you.
A dentist on the other hand can charge >$1000 / hour here? It's even more screwed up than the UK.

        • yeah it's a total scam.. not to mention all the associated scare mongering about other countries where certain facilities and practitioners are just as good if not much better (def facilities) than Aus. I'm lucky enough to only require checkup/clean/x-ray which I get it gap free at a couple of places I know without pissfarting around with so-called health fund member's choice rubbish but the general population is getting ripped off by dentists and labs.
