Selling on eBay with PayPal

Hi all.

I'm selling an item on Ebay.Bidding stops in about a day.Payment is via Paypal only. This is my first item on ebay and first time receiving a payment via paypal.

Any tips? Is there a way I can get scammed out of my money somehow? As far as I understand,as soon as the money is paid,it will show up as pending, and paypal will hold onto that money is delivered. Is that correct? Is it safe to send the item once the payment shows up in my account?

Thanks!

dont sell if you are scared of being scammed
    life is a risk

    Tips

    1. You don't ship out the item until you have confirmed that funds now exist in your Paypal account.
    2. Do not ship an item with a pending eCheque before the cheque clears, no matter how much a buyer begs/asks you to. The funds are not yours until the eCheck clears.
    3. When you ship the item, always ship with a trackable method, and always attach the tracking number to your item in 'My Ebay > Sold items' This is used as proof that you have indeed shipped the item and will give you better reputation for your ebay profile.

Regarding attaching tracking number to item on eBay, it's usually a good thing, unless the item is not delivered. It would be proof that the item was not delivered, thus you may lose the dispute-, even if you have proof of shipment.

Make sure to get a proof of lodgement receipt from Australia Post showing buyers suburb.

Once payment has cleared its your money to spend usually instant if they use Credit Card on their paypal account.

However once the recipient gets the item they have 45 days to dispute the transaction from payment date should the product you sell be mis-described or not in working order etc.

Do not allow pickup with Paypal. If you can delay a day or two (eg make sure the Ebay sale ends Friday night) that may reduce exposure. But as others suggest there is a 45 day window for dispute.

Ebay won't let you have funds straight away anyway if you are new seller.

Don't spend your Ebay proceeds for 45 days.

  • Thanks so far

So in the shipping section of my item it states

    • Will usually post within 1 business day of receiving cleared payment

I will double check with Paypal, if I feel that something seems dodgy

  • paypal is pretty safe as far as transactions go. You get immeidate confirmation as a seller if the buyer has paid, as a newbie the money will sit in your PayPal account for 2 weeks or so until you can move it to your bank account.

the big downside for sellers using paypal is buyers protection. If you get a dodgy buyer, they can state the item never arrived, didnt work, or wasnt as described, and ask for a refund. As a seller it's not easy to contest this, because ebay/paypal often tend to side with the buyer. It is a risk that you take, in return for using ebay as a platform which has huge exposure and often gets you a better price.

As a seller you can't 100% protect yourself, but as mentioned above, always get some tracking for your parcels and keep the receipts. FOr expensive items i also pay extra $3 for signature on delivery, all to avoid the 'item never arrived' dispute

The other thing is to feel out your buyer, if they have 0 feedback and/or have dodgy/weird request (like, send this to my niece in nigeria, its for her birthday, ill pay you extra, whats your bank account nr?) dont do it. If in doubt, send the buyer a message with your concerns and i find ebay telephone support quite helpful

good luck! and know that buying/selling on ebay goes well 98% of the time

You are correct. In case you don't know you also won't receive your money from eBay for a period while you establish a record as a seller.

When you create/edit the listing you should use the Postal Exclusions link and tick every box unless your shipping outside Australia. This prevents scammers outside Australia from buying your item. Saving a template with this already filled out saves time.

Also in Account settings somewhere that I forget you can set Buyer Requirements. Set everything to maximum safety to avoid buyers with low/bad feedback and non-phone verified accounts.

  • Some interesting info here!

I'm about to advertise on Ebay for the first time. Six guitars and two amps - total value around $7000.

I'm very aware of how sellers can be ripped off by buyers using Paypal, so to cover myself, and to avoid the delay in receiving the funds, I've decided to advertise "pick up" and "cash only".

It will restrict my market somewhat, but I'm not in any hurry to sell.

All I need now is a fee-free deal through Ozbargain, and I'll be good to go!

    • If you're going for pickup and cash only you're probably better off listing on Gumtree, it's completely free (unless you choose to ad things to your listing)

      • Ebay has a much bigger reach for the types of guitars I'll be selling.

I've come across quite a few people in the guitar community who have found guitars in other cities, and got knowledgeable friends/family to check them out and buy them.

However, I'll try Gumtree first, and see what sort of response I get. If necessary, I'll then use Ebay.

However, if I can't get a deal on the fees, I hate to think what the fees might be on six guitars averaging $1000 and two amps averaging $1800!! I suppose I should work it out!

If you're a new eBay seller then this deal might work for you: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/313004

      • That's the sort of thing I had in mind - but preferably for more than three items (see above)!

I wasn't one of the lucky ones with that offer - I didn't get an invite.

Come to think of it, I've NEVER received any sort of targeted offer from Ebay - and I've active as a buyer for a few years.

    • sign up for a few different ebay accounts, that way you increase your chance of being targeted in those deals. Has worked a charm for me
