I need a good dashcam so that if someone hits my car again, I have video evidence.
I've been meaning to do this for months, and since we have 10% off on ebay, I figured now is the time.
I'm not exactly sure what I want.
I figured something to record video on the dashboard is all I need.
What do people do about the rear?
Any recommendations?

Take a look at the A119 or A119S.
https://dashcamtalk.com/a119/It's discrete so it won't be obvious you have a camera, and has very good day and night video quality.
I would recommend just get one for the front to start off with. You can always decide to a rear camera anytime after.
They keep getting cheaper and better so there is no rush. Dashcam is like insurance for your insurance.a118c if you're on budget. a119s if you're not.
I have the A119 in my car, yes the video quality is great but I noticed it was starting to shake every time the car go over some small bumpy roads which would make the video almost useless
Took the camera out and can clearly tell just by giving it a tiny shake in my hands the camera lens surrounding was moving.(The part that swivels up and down was shaking side to side)
I placed some silicone (thats all I had) around the corners to hold it in place. Seems ok for now
Bought 2 of the A119S with GPS during the last sale. Very happy with the purchase.

That one is very good and has some advanced features, i'd only buy it for the special price though.
What is the situation on killing your battery if the vehicle is unused for a week or two, I know capacitors assist with this but a flat car battery is a pain in the tail!.
Any suggestions on this aspect?
Cheers.
Wire the dash cam to something that turns on with the accessory or ignition. Then powers off when you've taken the key out.
Unfortunately this prevent the use of motion detection recording but your battery will not drain when it's been sitting
stick one of these on your dash.

Here's a related question: are there any dash cams which you can put on the front windscreen but facing backwards to look out the rear window? I don't want to have to wire in a plug at the back. I don't really want one that does 140deg vision though, I don't need a camera recording the inside of the cabin constantly.

All the ones I could see there had two cameras, one that went on the front windshield, and one that went on the rear window. I'm looking/wondering if there exists one that only mounts to the front windshield but points both forwards and back. Wide angle for forward, narrower angle for back.
first one on the list.

another one fourth on best match.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/322379572574There's the Falcon dashcam that fits over the mirror with two cameras that you can point any way you like. This is actually my 3rd dashcam unit as I run blackvue's in both my cars… But use the Falcon when I go overseas and rent cars because it's so easy to install and has that full view of everything. Tucking the cables out of the way is simple too.
I just installed Viofo A119's in two cars and hardwired them both. Easy to do and you can route the wiring so it is invisible.
You can order them with a hardwiring kit or buy them separate.
I used a fuse adapter to supply power and used a fuse that was only active when the ignition was on.
The fuse double adapter does not come with the hardwire kit.
If fitted to a power source that is active when acc is on the camera will be running when acc is on… not so good if you are sitting listening to the radio etc.
Hi there , i quite like the vicovation marcas range been very happy with them . I have a big battery bank hooked up to it and when the car is off dash cam uses battery bank power.when car is on car charges battery bank has served me well and no flat battery and 24 hr recording.
May not suit people who are 5 mins to work,
I have the Vicovation Marcus 5. It has been a nightmare. If you look on Amazon reviews there is obviously an issue with it. The company generously offered to repair the rear camera for $85, more than it is actually worth.
I just gave a dashcam to my hubby for his birthday, a few days back.
I did a fair bit of research on them.
I bought him a "Blackvue" dashcam , which has a capacitor. There is no led screen, and it fits snugly under the rear vision mirror, one can barely see it.
You can buy one channel or two, which covers the rear window.
There is also this option "Power Magic Pro" which supplies power to your BlackVue from your vehicle’s battery according to the configured voltage and timer to prevent vehicle battery discharge.I bought mine from Amazon , as I upgraded from 16Gb card to 64Gb, which only cost $20.00 difference but here in Oz the difference for that size card was over $100.00.
Hubby is very happy with the quality of picture, especially at nightThis.
Very good dash cam, although not cheap, but good investment. Got one myself running for 4 years now.
I have the A118C good day footage, but night footage is pretty bad so wouldn't recommend it. I have two installed one at the front and one for the rear.
A118C
this where the a119s shines. the a119s is much better at night than the a118c. good for reading number plates on the vehicles in front.
we've got one a119s in the front, a118c in the rear. there is also a 4" dual lens + reversing as a backup in the front.
I drive a single 'Cab-over-chassis' ute.
So the best place for a Dual camera unit for me, is attached to the rear window. The rear facing lens shows all of the tray, plus those blind-spot edges.
And because the forward facing lens is behind my shoulder and centred, it give a Drivers view-point. Not only showing the view through the windscreen, it also shows a wider angle, plus the interior of the cab.The interior vids (which also shows speedo) can be handy to dispute speeding fines.
I'm not saying it will get you out of having to pay a fine, but it does give the magistrate room for doubt.Techmoan has a lot of good info. I picked up the Transcend DrivePro 200 and am pretty happy with it.
I use my phone to record everything. After arriving my destination safely, I just delete the video.
I'm just kidding. I only did it once and its not a good idea.I personally have this one (https://www.overwatchsecurity.com.au/products/lf10-xhd-1296p…) and it works fine.
