I am currently using this model:
300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router
Model No. TD-W8960N
Couple months ago I had network speed drop down issue, happened from time to time. Most time after I rebooted it and it was back to normal speed.
I then borrowed D-Link modem + ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 from my friend, gave it a go for a few weeks and no issues at all. Only sometimes couldn't access gmail and Facebook after 10pm. weird
I then returned it to my friend and keep using mine. It was fine for a couple weeks, then recently starts to misbehave again. The speed goes down, rebooting sometimes does not work like today when I am typing now, the speed just like 200KB/s, which normally is 1.1MB/s.
I have maximum 5 people live in the house. Would like faster LAN as I copy movies from my PC to laptop sometimes. Other fancy functions won't be needed I think. Right with ADSL2+, NBN is coming next year. So want to buy one can be use on both. Doing some research but would like to ask for advice first.
Grab the ASUS DSL-ac68U (modem + router) OR ASUS RT-AC68U (router only, capable of flashing Merlin firmware)
very popular modem router. both qualifies for $20 cashback.
If you buy the RT-Ac68U router, you will need to also purchase a ADSL2 modem, as the RT-68U does not have ADSL feature. An example of a cheap one could be the $39 dollar TD-W8960N which has a Broadcom chipset and is suitable for longer line distances.
HOWEVER If you're getting VDSL in the future you need a VDSL compatible modem router, in which case the DSL-AC68U fits the bill. You can get one for $238.40 from here using CRACKA20.
If you are getting Fiber to the Premises then the choice between a modem router combo versus a stand-alone router does not matter.
