Apple, Google & Microsoft - Which Company You Hate Least? Why?

It's the eternal rivalry between Apple, Google and Microsoft.

Each of these three companies offers unique products/solutions that appeal to a segment (or segments) of the technology market. I often find people use the services of all three companies. For example, an iPhone owner who uses the Google chrome browser and has a Windows PC at work.

What makes you least hate one (or more) of these three companies and why?

Thanks (mskeggs) for suggesting to alter the title.

    need a fourth choice

  • You do know that Microsoft is the company who makes Windows right?
you got the first two company's then listed an operating system for some reason.

    • +2

They make more than operating systems btw

      • Thanks for stating the obvious.

        • +9

          You're welcome

    • Wow

    • Not sure why you are negged. OP's post initially stated "Apple, Google & Windows" and he referred to Windows as a company.

      • +3

I found people will neg for literally no reason on here, I've put it down as just another mystery of the universe that may never get solved.

        • +2

Yeah I think some people just do it for kicks

        • +2

@Wystri Warrick: yep that's why I do it

        • +2

@Gimli: so your the mysterious down voter trolling Ozbargain, poor jv :p.
          Hehe

  • None, they are all bastards companies that want profit. I have no reason to admire any of them, or any companies that want profit.

    • +13

Unfortunately companies that don't want to be profitable rarely stay in business.

      • Eh, technically there are companies that are non-profit organisation. I think that's slightly going tangent (and I don't admire non-profit organisations either just because they don't make profit).

I think a lot of people got the impression that I was implying making profit is evil or I believe all economical activities are somehow tainted by greed. I was simply answering what the post originally was, "What makes you become a fan of one (or more) of these three companies and why?". My answer is, none because they are acting on their behalf (they want profit). They would exist and do what they do regardless of my admiration. Besides, I've paid my due when I bought the product.

Besides, making profit and whether it is moral or not I think are different concepts. There are ways to make profit and give back to society, social responsibility is the term that gets tossed around a lot recently I've heard. There are ways to raise profit without affecting the society like reducing overheads (better stock management, etc).

Anyways, I don't admire companies, because they are doing what they are doing because that gets them what they want.

    • Each of these companies only exists because of entrepreneurs responding to the needs of others.

Responding to the needs of others is the very opposite of greed, even if partly motivated by profits that can be generated in the process. Was Bill Gates greedy when he donates his hundreds of millions? Was Steve Jobs greedy when he worked for hours on end doing coding? Same goes for the founders of Google.

      You should watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6adVQrSUAc

      • +2

The point I was making is they do what they do because they want something, therefore I have no reason to admire them. Transactions are bidirectional, why should I become a fan?

Do I have a reason to admire the butcher or the baker who sold me meat and bread?

As with rich people who donate money, if I were little bit more bitter or wasn't on phone, I would talk about conspicuous spending and other motivations beyond money. Then it'd go into a philosophical debate on what is true altruism which would be tiring.

        • Only by having different jobs (butcher/baker/engineer etc) can we focus on improving how things are done and thereby improve our overall quality of life. There's 1000s of years of innovation in the everyday tasks and tools that butchers and bakers use. And the supply networks behind them.

Would you rather go off grid and live like some hermit primitive caveman? I would rather admire innovation and use it, and let people be rewarded for their innovation through profit.

If you don't like corporate greed then don't use the company. But people use them because they are actually providing helpful products and services. Profit is a reward for good effort, it's actually a measure of efficiency and helpfulness. Like I said you should watch the video.

        • +2

@inherentchoice: I think you are missing my point. I don't condemn the companies for acting upon their greed. Rather I simply don't see why I should be a fan of companies and their actions when what they were doing were for themselves.

The transaction is bidirectional. I pay what they deemed to be appropriate, they get what I paid.

Econ101, transactions occur when price = marginal benefit = marginal cost. In real life, it's obviously more complex but I paid what the companies want for their product, so why do I have to admire them?

It's like how I am not admiring flies for laying eggs in rotten flesh or how I am not admiring natural predators on culling down the population of animals. It's just part of what they do, I don't see why I need to admire them.

        • +1

          @inherentchoice:
I don't think it's the profit side that people have a problem with, its the anticompetitive nature and hostile actions that rub people the wrong way.

Btw, thats not a club you can join by waving a "I love microsoft" flag around. Bill gates would skin you alive and take your organs if he thought he could use them, no matter how much you agree with his method of doing business

  • +1

Perhaps which one you hate least would get more response?

  • +4

all the same to me. They are all evil. have a slight inclination towards Apple because of their product design but stay away because of the price.

  • +11

Apple is easily the most evil of these companies. Stays offshore to deny the US all of its taxes. Blatantly steals ideas and calls them its own. Focuses more on marketing and design than functionality. At least the founder of MS is doing all he can for charity these days.

    • Stays offshore to deny the US all of its taxes

Ok, all major corporations do this, its called the "Double Irish with a Dutch sandwich".

Blatantly steals ideas and calls them its own

All 3 have copied each other one way or another and implemented it their own way to keep up. It's called reinventing and refining. There's always room for improvement and they learn off each other. Sometimes its IP stealing depending on how they feel about it

      Some examples

      • Google's Android became what it is due to seeing success of Apple's iOS with the first iPhone. Android was completely different.
      • Apple has used ideas off Android's unique feature of customization to add to their OS like Quick controls. Google has done the same with Apple like TouchID fingerprint sensor. Apple wasn't the first but they made it better than anyone else and others followed suit in the same implementation.
      • MS has copied Google with its web based Office suite (Office 365 vs Google Docs vs iWork via iCloud)
      • MS copied Apple with its Window Store implementation vs Mac App store for Macs.
      • Apple copied MS with some Windows OS features like Remote Desktop (windows) vs Screen sharing (Mac) or the Alt+tab app switcher.

Focuses more on marketing and design than functionality

Who doesn't market? You don't get to be at the top without a good exposure for your targeted audience.
Design and functionality? Apple may design their products like Macbooks thin and light, and now look how many other manufacturers have followed suit with soldered on components like Dell's Ultrabook XPS for example. Being a huge market player also helps with adoption of newer tech like USB, Firewire, Thunderbolt and now USB-C (Slowly getting there). I'm not saying they did it first but at least they can use their position to help influence others.

And I'm not a fanboy, I use all 3 for various reasons. Each have their own strengths that I like about them.

    • They ALL do this, Bill was also renown for taking ideas from others. Ask Gary Kildall, Paul Allen. miami condom maker etc etc

But hey if my Hut does something wrong, thats ok, but woe betide any other hut doing the same.

This is capitalism at it's finest.

I don't like any they are all evil.

No poll? I’d say M$ to be honest though, Apple I feel go’s way to far in gaining money, I’m all for “build a new technology that people will buy” but I dislike the whole, restrictions everywhere so you either buy ours or GTFO.
Google always felt like they took the high ground when they never really did, they feel like the company that’s all like here is all my free stuff, but then behind it you know they’re taking all your user data and using you just as much.
M$ is just a company trying to make money off you, but its not really hidden or secretive, they don’t pretend to love you, they’re just like hay we want money, we made this, you buy it so we can get rich, which is why I like them most. Though I will be honest I have seen them a few times start learning some tricsks from Google and Apple :/ And the whole way they dealt with win 10 thing just felt gross.

  • They all want to make money, surprise surprise. So I nominate Google as having the least frustrating products. They have sensible engineers and UX people. Apple is also good at design but you do things the Apple way or not at all. MS products feel a little slipshod.

  • xbox one is better than ios 10 FTW. Better battery life too

  • +3

I don't hate any of them. I spread love not hate. <3

    • I spread legs not hate.

  • I like all of these companies. They all help meet my technology needs daily.

    • Apple: can live without. Have an iPhone and a MBP but can move back to Android, and buy a Surface if needed
    • Microsoft: will be harder to ditch. Desktop runs W10, use Office/OneNote regularly, have an Xbox I play sometimes
    • Google: very, very hard to live without. Gmail is my email provider, use search and Drive daily, YouTube and Maps are indispensable. I can theoretically replace these with Apple/Microsoft versions (except YouTube), but Google Maps is untouchable, and I can't stand Bing

So by default, I guess it's Google because they provide what I need.

  • +1

Google, because both Apple and Microsoft where run by angry in your face men. Which is ironic, because google is probably the most evil of the 3, evil enough they do a really good job of hiding it.

  • +2

Loving the Windows 10 experience on my Xbox, phone and PC. Last time i went on google it looked like a virus wanting me to install chrome, set as default browser and other pop ups.

  • +1

Microsoft. Purely because of the Xbox and other gaming related stuff from my childhood. (Halo primarily)

Edit: Apple I hate the most due to how overpriced their products are, especially computers. All they do is make the os and a case then sell it for absurd amounts of money. Since consumers know very little, they think the logo on the computer means everything, but in reality the parts are no different-Just the OS and case which are not worth the absurd cost.

Besides that, I do not see them as evil as, at the end of the day, they do provide a lot of jobs and tech innovation. Sure, we can talk about greed, but they're businesses. They can't innovate and move forward if they are in the red.

    • Edit: Apple I hate the most due to how overpriced their products are, especially computers. All they do is make the os and a case then sell it for absurd amounts of money.

No flaming any wars here, but I think people should realise this:

Microsoft charges for New Windows Upgrades from 7/8/8.1 to 10 offically. Even charges for going from Home > Pro for features already baked into the OS but just "locked" from users essentially. This is like unlocking DLC on games that already have it but locked.

Have you seen the Surface line? Don't get me wrong I think they have done some really innovated stuff with exceptional build quality like like the Surface Pro and Studio but the base Surface laptop is $1500 for i5, 4GB RAM and 128GB storage with a crippled OS (Windows 10S) and an optional upgrade to Pro for extra $$. Looks like exception build quality for a laptop but do the specs match its price?

Surface Studio is an engineering marvel itself with the zero gravity hinge and massive touch panel, but its specs don't seem to back up its massive price at $4699. Whereas the base model iMac is $2699 with more or less equal specs without the touch screen. 2K difference for touch and a tilting screen? You can decide that.

Surface Pro line is great and I think reasonably priced for its tech, but they called it a laptop yet refuse to bundle it with a physical keyboard adding cost

      • For windows, to be fair, they had a very long free upgrade time for windows 10. You can still get windows 10 for free legally with the accessibility path. For the Home>Pro thing, I agree but it does not effect me as I don't care much about OS features.

For the surface line, I know about it but I've never used them. I am assuming their price is that high because it is a one of a kind product? I definitely agree it is overpriced based on specs, but unlike apple it has a one of a kind form factor-which is what you are paying for. Sort of like cars in some ways, spec wise its not worth it, but you are paying for the engineering/design innovations, in this case form factor. Would I buy it? Hell no, I will always stick to custom built PC's.

I do agree it should atleast come with the general microsoft KBM set (the 20-30 dollar one) for users who would prefer that.

  • +1

I like Apple and their products but hate their pricing!

I like Google and Android and all the freebies you can get on Google Play.

I am neutral to Microsoft and only see them as a necessity for the everyday OS.

  • Out of Apple, Google & Microsoft, I'd have to say…

    Holden.

(They put a GMH badge on this piece of junk called a Cruze and there should
be UN Treaties that prohibit doing stuff like that).

  • +1

Hmm, microsoft originally made its money imitating Apple. Also vista. On the other hand it doesn't try to pretend what it isn't.
Apple charges too much, thinks it's pretty good, but on the other hand more privacy for you and I, and has driven the design ethos for the industry for years.
Google provides lots of stuff for free to make money, and a a result is ubiquitous and knows more about everyone than the NSA. I guess they sell you rather than the stuff.
I think google is most likely the evil one here.

Probably rate Apple higher as where would the industry and our products be without it?

But truth be known, Zuckerberg is the most evil.

  • +1

    My choice… Apple… Why?
I've NEVER used an Apple product.
Google & Microsoft are both (I'm sure) evil.
So going with the unknown is probably wrong, but what are ya gonna do?

    • Apple fanbois are gonna neg ya

  • Google. I don't hate them at all. I'm very impressed with the range of software they make.

Their software is genuinely good. Maps, search, all the things you use every day but take for granted or don't realize is powering something else. They collect very good data which makes apps that use the data very accurate. Google maps is far better than Apple maps. Their search engine is better than Bing, and Chrome is better than Safari. Gmail is the best free mail.

If I could work for any of the three companies it would be Google.

Since Google is mainly a software company, and aside from Pixels don't sell much hardware, there's less hate and fanboyism. I know of fanboys of Microsoft consoles, and Apple phones/macs/ipads but I don't know if there's such thing as a "google fanboy".

  • I might dislike some companies but I never hate them. Hate is such a strong word to use when you have the choice not to do business with them.

I dislike Google the least because I could use many of their products for free ;)

  • They are equal parasites. Siphoning all private data they can get their hands on. State Intelligence spyware collaborators & all of them paying only token amounts of tax on their earnings, here and abroad. The last point I can kind of understand. Tax money is DEAD MONEY anyway, so they can do what they want. The average muppet thinks paying more tax will go somewhere worthwhile. No, it will just increase the waste, inefficiency and greed. The fraud, the filth, the e-waste…goes to the highest levels.
