    Cheaper than a haircut

    • I can't find haircuts less than $20 these days.

      • +2

Let me introduce you to my local barber.

        • +1

          Baba the cosmic barber?

        • @bargainist:

Not that Baba. It's OzBaba, the baldy barber!

      • +1

I just found one in East Vic Park today.
        Men's haircuts = $10.
And its not just a kid with a pair of clippers - its a real hairdresser.
        I'm overjoyed.

        • Hey Blair which hairdresser is it? Might try him tomorrow :)

        • +1

@batrarobin: don't forget your video camera!

        • +1

@batrarobin: F&M Hair on Albany Hwy in East Vic Park

        • +1

          @blaircam:
There is also one in the Park Centre shops that does cuts for $10

        • +1

          John Mill?

        • @mmd: And, to add to the list, I have just been informed that Hair SG Quikcuts in Bentley Forum does men's haircuts for $10 too.
Now that's three places near me for $10!!!

      • They are a few barber shops around Melbourne city for $15

        • There's a place next to RMIT (Bourke St campus), in the arcade that has Starbucks, that charges $9.95

      • For a bargainist you sure aren't trying hard enough… unless of courser you're female ;)

        • How do you know there's none around me within a 20km radius? Unless you travel an hour for a sub $20 haircut.

This one is the cheapest generic Chinese one, not US made.

    • +1

It doesnt do the job, when I returned it to TGG the lady said i should for US made models …

    • +8

Its fine if you have Chinese hair…

      • I'm a 5th generation Aussie. How can I tell if I have Chinese hair?

        • +3

Gee mate its not rocket scientology, buy one of these and if it cuts it, you must have.

        • Well.. I guess OzB's not the place for ironic comedy.

        • +3

          @uniqualz: Or is it

        • @Tuba: That's not bad mate.

        • I'm a 5th generation Aussie. How can I tell if I have Chinese hair?

limited or no facial hair is a good indicator. limited or no sideburns. limited hairs on arms and legs. limited hairs round you know where.

        • @whooah1979: Yep, gotcha. And if I have a thick, ginger bush..?

        • @uniqualz:

Yep, gotcha. And if I have a thick, ginger bush..?

hello hot irish ginger. do you have green eyes?
          https://www.google.com.au/search?q=irish+ginger&source=lnms&…

        • +1

          @uniqualz: Fanta pants.

    • US made is no longer a guarantee of much as many components for US products are made in china or they make in US for domestic market and china for rest of world. We don't seem to complain that iphones are made in china or the TVs we watch are made in china.

so,let's not knock the clippers because of country of origin as wahl put their brand on it so would be made to spec,

if people know of a particular design fault focus on that with specifics.

      • Sometimes its easier and still true to simply state its a garbage Chinese variant. If company X have two factories, one in China, chances are they havent got the Chinese factory up to spec. Eneloop for example, make batteries in China and Japan. The Chinese variant are not anywhere near as good. We are in the distribution region of the Chinese factory (since the Panasonic branding).

  • +11

Don't bother, its a waste of money. These are garbage. The worst thing about it is that, unless you cut your hair multiple times a month. You won't find out that the clipper only works for 3-4 times til its too late, and the retailer tells you to deal with the manufacturers directly. Not worth the hassle. Spend a couple more bucks and get a decent one.

    • Most big retailers like Harvey Norman will let you just swap it for a new one so maybe you just need to go for better deals.

    • +7

the retailer tells you to deal with the manufacturers directly.

      Unlawful.

      • Yes, but how much time do you want to waste on a 20 (the price that I bought it at) clippers?

  • Bought one from good guys 6 months ago for $19. Cheap but works as good as one I paid $80 for. Highly recommend it.

  • +1

Forget this one, go for wahl designer, wahl balding or wahl legend.Cost more but better investment.

  • +1

What's the regular price for this one?

  • +1

Does this device have to be connected to power source while using or can be charged and used wireless?

    • +2

      They are cabled mate.

  • +6

There are terrible, cheap and nasty Chinese made. Spend the extra and get the USA made Wahl clippers with the Power Drive motor in them. I paid $80 for mine (Wahl Colour Pro) 9 years ago. Still going strong. I replaced the blade in them 2 years ago and they were like new again. They get used every 3 weeks on 3 heads.

    • +29

      Are you from Tasmania?

      • Nah, QLD. Why?

        • +4

Ask one of your 3 heads…

        • +3

          Woosh ;)

I guess you could say that joke went right over your head.

          (•_•)

          ( •_•)>⌐■-■

          (⌐■_■)

        • +3

          @monkeyboy666:
          All three of them

  • +3

Spend more on the Made In USA one. Hve the cordless one. Use it all the time and works great. Had a cheep chines one and it was rubbish.

    • +1. Wahl China != Wahl USA

      • +5

        Wall Mexicano?

        • ahhh donald making america great again……

      • +5

The great Wahl of China prevails…

    • Link please?

  • Any of you gentlemen cut your own hair? I wanna try and do it because the hairdressers always screw it up, but I'm just worried about doing the back.

    • Ready for mental imagery? I do a no blade baldy hairstyle. Use a cordless Philips (approx $60?) which is water resistant, naked in bathtub with hand mirror. First time took about 30minutes, and was pretty uneven and patchy. Asked the wife the clean it up, but took only a few goes before doing it 'by feel' by myself. Now takes about 15mins to cut and shower/clean up. 5 years later still going strong, cut about once a week. Feel free to insert naughty innuendos.

      • so you shaved your head and it took a few goes to get it right?

        • +1

Yep. Start off with a shaved head (ie get someone to do the first one for you), then you are only 'maintaining'. Use a hand mirror to check what you can. Don't be afraid to press the blades against your head (gently). And I use a razor to tidy up the back and sides (again by touch and use my left hand index finger as a guide). I start at the nape, which is probably the hardest to get right due to the terrain and being at the back, but do it slowly and a few times.

        • Start my having a go with longer blades.. Eg if you are cutting to grade 3 then use grade 5. It gives you a chance to go grade 4 then 3 if something goes wrong.

I use my iPad with front camera to see the back of my head.

      • i have the wahl balder …..zero every few days takes a couple of minutes ….. the number of models they make can get confusing as i noticed the balder is about as close as the ones with the lever if lever is used for close shave…. marketing.

        • balder/balding is as close as going to get with a clipper but the motor isnt as strong as ''designer'' or ''legend'' but still very strong in own right.

      • Wow, I thought I was the only one who did the naked in the bath thing!

I can't do the back though so the wife finishes me off…so to speak.

    • they give you different size combs so,it's easy to get a consistent length all round and then use shorter comb on back ….. it's why they give you so many comb sizes in home units ….

    • +1

I'm just worried about doing the back.

Buy a webcam with a nice long USB lead, and use it and your computer (hopefully a laptop) to view the back of your head while cutting.

    • +1

I cut my own hair now (with a set of Wahl clippers like these) and can do a fade haircut after watching youtube videos. Pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

    • +1

I dont do baldy, I stick to number 3, but I do my own often. I might have stray hairs sticking out all over the place and my wife finds it funny so says nothing. Probably points it out to people and laughs while out in public. I bet she does. I cant believe she does that the bitch. I'll fix her.

There is a version made for self use, cant think of it, but maybe look into it.

  • +1

    "professional level"

  • +1

I didn't have much success with Wahl clippers. The cutting was very poor.

The Philips were much better. I have been using this model (or a model prior but looks identical) for about 10 yrs! I tried to upgrade to a $100 Philips model but it didnt cut as well, so I returned for a refund.

    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/philips-hair-clipper-qc5365/…

    • I bought the wahl USA made and they are exceptional, they can be had as cheap as 40 odd dollars if you are a good OzBargainer

    • I didn't have much success with Wahl clippers. The cutting was very poor.
      The Philips were much better.

There must be something with you cutting skills then. Wahl made in the USA is the top brand every hair dresser and barber use.

Philips sells great energy savings light bulbs amongst other things. Their clippers aren't on the must have tools list.

      • Maybe the Wahl were ok for a few months, but they didnt last. I used the oil. They were made in the USA.

But yea, I know the Wahl should be great, but they weren't for me.

      • I'm still rocking philips philishave c644 hair clippers purchased back in 2001 in the UK (now having to using a plug adapter for the transformer).

        16 years of #5 every 4 weeks :)
        That is approximately 200 uses.
        200 * $25 = $5000.

Missed opportunities on the lady front as a result of crappy buzz-cut haircut - what dollar value do you put on that :)

  • Been using this for the last year- no complaints.

    • I wrote to the ombudsman about your hair just last week.

Frightened the bejeebers out of me! ;)

      • Damn it. Well, my mum thinks I'm handsome.

  • For that price it better be made in USA

  • Are the blades and guides the same sizes as the American Wahls? Could be a cheap way to get replacement parts which can be quite extensive individually

  • $25 at good guys and $35 at Myer. Cheapest is this deal but doesn't look like it's usually hard to find at a cheap price elsewhere. Is obviously the Leyland P76 of clippers!

    • Can get price beat at the good guys extra 5% discount which comes to $10

  • Costco had the US made one on sale, not sure if its still going tho

    • +1

They sure do. Was in the Brisbane store yesterday. $45 or 50 ($60 normally) for the combo set I think from memory. They're made in the USA. Only thing I couldn't work out is IF they had the stronger motor in them or not as the box wasn't clear.

  • I have exactly the same one from 3 or 4 years ago, probably ozbargained. I get my hair cut from home ever since and the machine is still doing fine.

  • $10-12 for a buzzcut at my local shopping centre - and the hairdressers are hot

    • +2

Please hand in your Ozbargain membership.

      • -1

I know, a proper OzBaraginer would cop a free feel of boob on the shoulder at a crowded rail station.

        • -1

          On the shoulder?

Sometimes you gotta take matters "in your own hands" mate ;)

  • +1

These are garbage, wouldn't use if free.

    • +2

garbage in what way can you be specific ?

      • I had a problem with a plastic guide tooth snapping under light pressure and the blades blunting real quick, not an issue with my Phillips.

  • Can anyone tell me if the body of it is made mostly with plastic or metal? I couldnt find the weight of it on the website. Funily enough I want a plastic one so its light weight haha

  • +2

Keep those blades well lubed and your US Wahl will buzz away forever. I rechrome my scone 25 times a year. Had my Wahl for 12 years. Replaced the blades once. All the way with the USA. Support the Don. Support climate change. Bloody cold in Melb this morning.

  • Its out of stock ,but you can still have a back order
    Cheers

    • Go to The Good Guys . Get price beat 5% . Comes down to $10 .

  • Just as well its out of stock. Very poorly made and extremely poor cutting performance. Tried returning it about a week after it was purchased (about a year ago), tough HN said "you have used it"! Pity about consumer law "not fit for purpose"!!!! Wife couldn't be bothered arguing for such a small price.
Avoid this product at all costs, you will be disappointed.

    • Did you end up buying another hair clipper after that?

      • +1

I resumed using the old one. That's how bad this Wahl is.

  • Got this today at The Good Guys . Price beat 5% so it came down to $10 .

    • How does that work? 5% of $14 is .70c so shouldn't you have paid $13.30?
