Optus leading the way in terms on Mobile Broadband data.

50GB+50GB = 100GB total for $70 a month with no lock in contract.

Month to month or can be contracted on a 24month deal with a modem.

Edit: I just bought one this afternoon. I can confirm it comes with TV and Music streaming free.

I'm close to ditching my ADSL for this type of offering.

    That is a great deal. I couldn't figure this out easily from reading the site but can you get multiple sim cards to use in multiple devices (eg. a modem, a dual sim phone, an iPad, etc). It sounds like if you have multiple Optus personal plans then you could aggregate the data allowance?

      I doubt that multiple sims on the same plan is possible. Or are you talking about paying for multiple plans.

      The multiple sim cards is called a "Tri Sim" it fits in the 3 types of sim sizes, just push out the size you need.

      If you try to pool now AFAIK they all have to be paid services (so you have to pay for monthly data sims to access it)

      Unlike before where you could do a once off $5 data share sim (up to 5 IIRC)

        I'm currently sharing 5 sims on the Optus data pool
        1 mobile phone sim + 4 data sims using the Huawei E5573 modems for a total of 25gb/month

        I first bought an extra sim for $5 to use this way before Optus phased out that deal.

        After calling Optus for advice I got around it by purchasing another 3x prepaid data sims for $15 which don't need an ongoing monthly charge. You can then join these sims to your shared data pool for no monthly charge. I don't know if they still do this but I'm possibly going to try one more sim?

      I'm going to ask my local store this arvo what that means!

      Edit: To clear thought I don't think it is limited as much as the home wireless broadband (its limited to 12/1 or 5/1)

      So I asked the Sales rep (Immanuel at Engadine) what the limit of speed was.

      He seemed to know his stuff and said its not limited like the 12/1 plan is. It's treated like any other 4G plus device on the network. He indicated that statment in the CIS is there to protect optus when there is congestion?

      I just called them and got ditched 3 times back into the queue when on hold and finally told I need to cancel and re-sign up online. Literally signed up to 50GB 70$ plan 7 days ago … getting very pissed off. Can't seem to sign into my account as they no longer accept phone numbers as username and when I attempt to register email address it errors out …

      Optus Chat - 1 person … 1 explanation … 1 result = Upgrading your plan now. Will take effect at the start of next billing month as our system won't allow us to change part way through the cycle.

      Asked for upgrade over the chat - order placed and told will be processed within next 24-48 hours.
      Tho this one, when month to month, doesn't come with free netflix quota - only music. That's what they told me.

    How does everyone go with speed from these? From my Optus iPhone plan the Speedtest hits about 25mbps, whereas when I use an Unlocked Telstra 4Gx modem or an Optus USB, the speedtest for the data sim only hits 5mbps. It's like it's intentionally capped somehow

    For $20 a month more you can uses vividwireless, which has unlimited data and uses optus 4g network. I use it and it works perfectly. Ditched my old adsl with telstra which was garbage.

    Thanks for this. I've just been looking for options for running an internet based POS & payment terminal at a new business address that only has ADSL available, with the promise of HFC (yes, I know DOCSIS 3.1 is still a year away at best) in the next 3-4 months. This will tide us over nicely, and for our purpose isn't any worse than ADSL.

          This is why I am happier on a crap pre-paid plan. When I was month-to-month, I'd often go over by a few gig and it would cost extra. If they'd cap the plan at 100GB and require you to go online to authorise additional data for that additional cost, I'd be happier with it.

      I believe it throttles it on mobile Netflix app connections. If you access it from the web or any other device it will slurp the data.

        That's right, it sends an email at the different intervals. 85 then 100%.
        You can get an SMS as well as the default email.

          there is often a HUGE lag though. I got an email stating used 85%. I turned off my device, 10 minutes later another message saying I has gone over and been charged for 1gb. 30 minutes later I got charged another GB. I canned the plan after that, totally poor and unacceptable.

          I think my ipad started doing update as I had just bought it. Also this is in WA and there seem to be issues compared with East coast and times

          Had the same thing happen to me while on holidays interstate. I had about 10gb left on a 20gb plan with less than a day to go until the next billing cycle. So I let the kids watch youtube for a few hours. Got the first sms saying you've used up 10.31% then 17.02gb then in less than 10 minutes it jumped to "You have exceeded 20gb, You now have an extra 1gb for $10". It ended up going 5gb over even though I stopped at the second sms of 17.02gb.
          Definitely a lag which is pretty dodgy, just got to plan ahead but this new unmetered netflix is awesome.

        I apologise, but this information I provided is not correct. It is actually a public IP. In my case I am using them in Huawei E3372 sticks which are "HiLink" dongles. Such dongles are actually routers and hence provide the attached PC / router with a private address.
        So, to clarify, the Optus service/SIM itself provides a public IP, but you want to place the SIM in a device that isn't "HiLink".

    When mobile data plans get to 200gb per month I will switch from my low speed ADSL2+. At the moment 100gb per month just isn't enough for me.

      Same - I'm currently paying $80 a month for unlimited ADSL2+ with Telstra. My average data use over the past 8 months is 190GB a month. My speed was working completely fine for the first 6 months getting 14 down/0.5 up. Now over the past 2 months I'm only getting 4 down/0.1 up. Have been waiting for 5 weeks for a technician to check it.

      If I could find a 25/5 speed plan for around the $100 a month I'd pay it.

      This comes close - Would buy 2 plans so have 200GB data for $140. Have one modem upstairs and one modem downstairs.

    an ipad on the same? 100GB data plan for $70 a month. I assume a new ipad 32GB LTE is worth a lot more than the modem.

    Then you could sell the ipad and buy a 4G router, or buy a cheap 4G router and keep the ipad.

    Any reason this wouldn't work?

    Anyone else notice a lot of high Data allowance plans lately?

    I wonder if it is because optus and Voda have recently invested a lot of money into their network, or if this will just end up in tears when these popular deals get overloaded with people and congestion causes everyone to suffer.

    coz I don't see Telstra offering this much data, and apparently they invest more in their network than all else.

        Yea, but that's what they always say.

        Reading forums from whirlpool etc, doesn't seem to make mention of any additional investment in network outside of usual maintenance.

        I have a feeling congestion is inevitable.

    Just wanted to post this link to the Whirpool forum wiki.
    It basically answers a few questions about the E5186 modem.

    I downloaded this tool that was linked on the whirpool site and was amazed how it helped. It gave a higher degree of mobile connection info, so much so that I turned the modem 90 degrees and it idicated beter stats and reception, the upload speed went from about 11Mbit/s to 26Mbit/s wow!

      Just looking at the E5186 modem and noticed that it was running on Band 28.
      Band 28 is 700MHZ which means not as fast as 1800Mhz.

      Using the LTEwatch I was able to force it onto the 1800Mhz Band (LTE band 3) and get much higher speeds.

    I have cable internet. I pay for a 100mb plan. Every evening and all weekend I get between 0.5Mbps and 2.5Mbps. Most times it is under 1Mbps. Optus run their services so congested. Optus tell me these speeds are fine because I could us my internet during non peak times.

    I would not sign a service with Optus if I could avoid it. Unfortunately I have called every other internet provider and non can service my house.

      My parents are in Upwey south close to glenfern rd and phone signal isn't the greatest, still works but you wont hit max speeds or anything. There are just way to many trees. But I guess it depends where you are and line of sight to the tower. Location is a huge factor.

      One of those little 4g modems wouldn't cut it for the hills, will need something with powered antenna.

Anyway whats everyones modem of choice? I have been looking for a proper modem with Ethernet ports and a sim slot. This is the best and most reasonably priced one I could find. But it doesn't have Gigabyte Ethernet…

      Data free Mobile TV streaming is not suitable for tethering, hot-spotting to multiple devices or streaming to a bigger screen using services such as Chromecast or Apple AirPlay. If you do tether or stream to a bigger screen, it will use your included data.

      But …

      With the new Netflix Download and Go feature, if I want to download a Netflix TV show or movie and I am an Optus Mobile TV streaming customer, will this be data free?
      Yes, if you are an Optus Mobile TV streaming customer and you have a subscription to Netflix, you can download Netflix video content data free. The download speed will be limited to 1.5Mbps so we suggest you use Wi-Fi to download or watch it on the go without using your data.

      So maybe you can download and then Chromecast? reddit says no but still try as it seems it was a different scenario. The video is encrypted locally and perhaps all that's required is a connection to Netflix for the key and account confirmation which would use a trivial amount of data. You'd have to do this via screen mirroring to stand any chance …
