  • Are these ones any good?

I usually get the VARTA alkalines from Bunnings… Mainly used in the kids toys…

Good price. BigW's Chevron brand is about $8 for 24 alkaline.

Judging by previous alkaline battery posts on ozbargain, I'll get in first before the 'buy rechargeables' crowd. NiMH cells are great. I use them almost all the time. But they're not suitable for all situations.

    • lol clever move. +1

  • -1

Besides emergency uses, why do we still use non-rechargeables haha

    • +3

NiMH and NiCd batteries deliver 1.2v per cell, Li-ion deliver 3.7v. Not quite right for devices that require 1.5v (not many, but they exist). Apart from that, using rechargeables in devices where normal batteries last years doesn't make much sense. Examples include remote controls, clocks, weather stations, etc.

    • the funny thing, i think, is that there are very few uses left for rechargeable AA/AAA nowadays!

it used to be that cameras chewed through AA batteries and you really had no choice but to use rechargeable ones. but now everything just about have switched to rechargeable proprietary lithium batteries, rechargeable AA became much less useful.

i have two rechargeables in the torch.

then non-rechargeable cells for clock, wireless keyboard (3yr battery life), second wireless mouse (1yr battery life).

      • People still swear by using rechargable batteries in cameras. When you're out in the open with no power point to charge from, the only other alternative is to stock spare batteries.

  • Was at Bunnings today and saw 24 pack (or maybe 30) AA alkaline with a nice Arlec battery tester for $8.xx
Cannot compare branded alkaline with cheap ones, DSE gets them bulk from factory in china. Energizer probably makes them in China as well but they are better quality.

"DSE gets them bulk from factory in china. Energizer probably makes them in China as well but they are better quality."

so whats being madeenchina got to do with anything. what isn't madeenchina.

      • Better QA for a start.
The point wasn't that they are made in China.
btw, I have bought those cheap Coles alkaline (AAA) you posted last year. Out of 7 packs used so far, 1 had leaked before it was even removed from the packaging.
To date I have never had an Energizer leak.

        • FWIW, I've never been too impressed with Energizers (Oi); I've had quite a few leak over the years, and the working life has not been the best IMHO! ;)

Duracell though, completely different story; I've never had one leak & they always outlast any other alkaline I have! Must be that bunny-power! :)

          • @StewBalls: Read on an different post here that some people had bad experience with a batch of Duracell which "exploded".
I guess it depends on the batch. I'm not saying those cheap alkalines are no good, I use them as well, just that you need to decide what's the best choice if you are using them in expensive equipment or toys for toddlers.

          • @StewBalls: By pure coincidence, just an hour ago I took out my Dymo labeller to print a label. The Duracell AA batts leaked inside. Bah.

        • consider yourself lucky it leaked before use =P

I still think rechargeables have many great uses. I use them in wireless game console controllers for the Wii & Xbox 360. If I were using normal batteries I'd be going through quite a lot of them & then be contributing more to recycling (I gather a lot of people still just put them into rubbish going to landfill). Reduction in waste should be better then sending more stuff to recycling.

By the way shops like Battery World can take any old used batteries for recycling so don't bin them.

  • So we've got DSE alkaline, bunnings and chevron for comparable prices.. does anyone know if one or the other is better? Cheers

  • +3

bunnings normal price for 30xAA alkaline is $8.99 (30c per cell).

    • Yup, must have been the same ones I saw but it also included a nice Arlec battery tester.

      • Yes, it's Arlec with the tester as bonus. Just bought one a couple of weeks ago, haven't tested if the tester actually works or not :), but doesn't really care, 8.99 for 30 alkaline (albeit generic/unknown brand) is good enough for me…

  • I recall that they were previously on sale for $4.99 the last time..
They short change us by $1!!!!
