any special on 10m ones? Need some for my office.
Also, does a longer cable mean slower data transfer?

    • -7

      of course it does…

      • No it doesn't. Not in the usual lengths you use for network cables anyway. As slowmo says, ethernet cable is rated upto around 100m without degradation.

        • The questions was

"does a longer cable mean slower data transfer?"

          The Answer is

          "yes it does"

Data will take longer to travel 100m than it does to take 1m… It's called latency…

                    @jv: Now now kids settle!

    • +4

Longer cables = more resistance and higher chance of interference. 10m should be okay though.

                    • -1

@jv: Yes your answer is correct to the question you say in your post.

However, the question mick123 asks is different due to the context it's placed in. Your answer to his question is correct, however, incomplete.

You should of answered "Yes, longer cable is slower data, however, because you're only looking at getting 10m cables, the difference won't be noticed."

                      Here's a video on cabling.

if you worry about interference, then go get STP instead…

also, 100baseT standards catered to up to 100 metres with no degradation.

      • What do you mean SHOULD be ok!? It WILL be fine for at least 100m. Far out…

    • Nope, should work fine.
I can vaguely recall that cat5e can to 1 gigabit @ 100 metres.
I get exactly 1 gig over home network (ramdisk to ramdisk).
My only real limitation is disk speed (~600mbit).

      • yes it can do 1000base-T if you are on a good quality UTP.

though I wouldn't go as far as to exaggerate getting "exactly" 1gbit transfer speed. One can get close to the 1gbit but never at that speed. ;)

irrelevant to topic, maybe you can change your disk speed to SSDs… it'll fix your slow disk issue.. though you would find that the quality of your NIC, your switches/routers, your motherboard and RAM/CPU plays an important role too.

      • CAT-5 is rated to 100M
        CAT-5e is rated to 350M

CAT-6 and CAT6e is rated to 550M or 1000M depending on your source

  • Yeah 10m would be fine. There aren't any special deals on the 10m cable but its a fairly decent price already.

  • I thought you could pick a cat6 2m up for $2 at most places? or is the following good value also?

    http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

    suppose only one colour though.

    • +3

yep, and most geeks have an extensive interior design plan based around the colour of network cable ;-)

      • +1

        actually i do… ;)

red colour always for crossovers, blue/grey for straight and green/yellow/black for console/rollover.

White cables will be matched with colour tips which reflects the above colour coding scheme.

i like my network cables and patching organised.

        • Yeah we get requests for various colours all the time. Pretty handy when you need to figure out what cable goes where. We'll add more colours for our OEM range shortly to ensure they are all available.

          • @warcom: My wife makes me select the colour to match the decor in the room…

            • @jv: So black it is then! I'd always pegged you for an emo jv! ;)

You can get those (MSY also) but they are a VERY low quality cable. The difference between a cheap cable vs. a high quality one is noticeable as soon as you get it in your hands.

If you want a cheap low quality cable the link you provided will be sufficient. But like all things you get what you pay for…

MOD: edited text to remove language

    • +1

The MSY cables are quite good quality.

To get a higher quality cable you have to spend 5x more then MSY.

Its easy to say something is higher quality, but you need proof….

      • Hey Sam - I'm going to do a blog post in the next week or two about the differences in cheap Cat6 cable vs. quality ones. We are waiting on receipt of some name brand cables which I can do some speed tests on and cut in half. I don't want to make it a Warcom OEM cable vs. MSY comparison. Got some Belkin and others on the way.

You don't need to spend big bucks to get quality cabling… but as requested we'll put together some info about the difference in cables we sell.

      what's a yumcha cable?

      • +11

Its often used to refer to a low quality/generic product that usually originates from China. It is also quite a misnomer though, anyone who has actually eaten at a Yumcha restaurant will know that its bloody expensive for what you get.

    • +5

Do you have any proof that their cable doesn't conform to the Cat5e spec, apart from "it dun feel rite in ma hand"?

      • From my experience, MSY have cables that say that they are cat6e or similar(Ritmo and aPower brands)- I don't think cat6e is an official spec yet but i got myself a 30m cable and it does not run at gigabit speeds. The shorter ones(still cat6e from MSY) seem to do gigabit fine though(all this was done through the very scientific analysis of plugging it into my gigabit modem and PC and watching for the gigabit lights to blink- very entertaining I must say). Ended up buying a Belkin cat6 cable for almost 3 times the price but at least that works at gigabit speeds.

        • +1

I have a 50m cable from MSY running over my entire house (up the wall, along the roof, down a wall) and it works great.

    • +7

-ve for you mate. that "yumcha" comment is racist.

      • -1

Im asian (chinese to be specific), and back in singapore we use that word to define cheap and shitty products. I dont see how thats racist if i myself am a chinese. =/

        • I'm caucasian and dont feel racially oppressed by the term either (although I'm not a fan).

Unfortunately, racism claims are not up to me. Instead, an objective test usually applies where the word/slur would likely cause offence.

These days, it seems that it's becoming more subjective though.

  • The MSY cables ARE rubbish. They are quite thin compared to a decent cable.

    For $2, can't go wrong..

  • +1

    +1 vote the argument above

    • I know, I popped out to do some work, I come back to find the kids are a fussin' an' a feudin'; and all without me - I'm so proud of them! :)

  • In case anyone is interested in stats here is the break down by colour of sales so far:

    Black 33%
    Blue 25%
    Red 21%
    White 21%

Thanks for all the support everyone!

    • well blow me down… i would have thought blue would be way in front…

      • +2

Nah, I would've though red. Red ones go faster.

        • LOL Yeah scientifically proven to be 33.34% faster than white. I guess everyone is buying them for the xbox 360 s or elite?

          • +2

@Fuzor: We are currently developing a new cable with speed holes in it.

One minor set back - we are having a hard time keeping the 1's and 0's from falling out of the holes.

            • @warcom: make the holes smaller…

  • Just one question… what's the length limit on a cat6 cable (have some spare clipsal cat6 cable from building the house), I need a quick fix solution to get me 'nets from downstairs to upstairs while waiting for the wiring in the wall to be solved. 100mbps speed is fine, just need something that can keep up with 8mbps cable net with relatively low latency really.

  • ^^^ Courtesy of jv! ;)

CAT-6 and CAT6e is rated to 550M or 1000M depending on your source

    • Sorry didn't see that those kids were giving me quite a headache with their "discussion".

  • Hi Guys
