  • Just a simple question - Does it really matter what brand Ethernet cable you use?

Also what version of cable should we all be using these days that will futures proof yourself for a awhile

Yeah, dodgey brands can claim a higher cat, have less shielding, etc. You don't need to get the big brands but just be aware of the cheaper ones (as with anything really).

Cable usage depends on what speeds you're getting at home, personally I'm using cat 6 which is up to 10Gbps, and given Australia's internet… should be future proof for a while lol

      • What brand would you recommend if you had to and can I get cat 7?

        • Cat 7 has the disadvantage of being bulkier and not wanting to flex as much - you'll want to make sure you have a need for it. There is even Cat 8 cable these days - https://www.bunnings.com.au/antsig-3m-cat8-s-ftp-ethernet-ne… but it's not going to be an upgrade over a system that isn't bottlenecked by Cat 6.

More often you'll have people buy a reel of a few hundred meters and use it for a few locations for commercial stuff anyway

        • As long as you buy from a reputable seller, you should be fine. There are a lot of brands out there so hard for me to pin point one.

Cat 7 technically isn't an official IEEE standard (although it'll work just fine), if you wanted to step up a notch then I'd go Cat 6a. Cat 8 is probably overkill for home use and as superroach mentioned, more used for commercial

          • @Denaz: Ok thanks
Most of my cables are Cat5E atm but was just asking as I wanted to know what I should be running from the Router

            • @Twisty: Cat 5e still supports 1Gb/s, which for 99% of home users is more than enough. It's still probably the most widely used of the Cat cables. As long as you've got some good quality cables it's fine.

              • @jazzyman9182: Thinking I’m running a brand that I got from EBay

I’ll have to check out the brand
