Help me pick a cologne

Hey guys I'm looking to buy a cologne for myself. About 30 yo, in Sydney.

So far from testing out fragrances at Myers, DJ, and Chemist Warehouse I've liked:
- Chanel Bleu
- Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L'homme

I've also found Armani Code and D&G The One suited me quite well. As well as aquatics in general such as Versace Pour Homme and Acqua Di Gio. I used to own Cool Water but would like to move on from that.

What doesn't suit me are spicy colognes like spicebomb, Burberry London, YSL Opium.

I've recently bought a small 50ml bottle of Versace PH and am looking to buy another cologne preferably to suit the night time and winter time better.

Chemist Warehouse has great deals and I'm eyeing the Armani Code 125ml for $90 or the D&G The One 100ml for $70. The problem with the one is it's a great scent but rather weak and short-lasting. Armani Code is also a great scent but smells more common and alcohol-strong than The One. Both smell nice on me, though not as nice IMO than the higher end ones from DJ / Myers.

From watching / reading reviews it seems La Nuit De L'homme is one of the best cologne to get and indeed smelled great when I tried it on. It is quite expensive at DJ and from reviews the latest formulation of La Nuit is diluted and weaker than old formulations.

Should I go for one of those 2 or go for Chanel Bleu / La Nuit / some other fragrance at DJ or online?

    I use these
Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L'homme
    Valentino Uomo Intense
    Armani Code
    D&G no6
    prada luna rossa extreme

    all very nice

    • Thanks. Which is your favorite (if you have one)? Also where do you get your La Nuit from, shops or online? Myers has the 100ml for $145 which I find expensive (and it looks like the diluted batch too).

      • Valentino Uomo Intense and Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L'homme are my fav
pretty sure i got both at DJ's with a staff discount.

  • CK Obsession Night?

  • I like Dolce and Gabanna The One Gentleman myself (I'm a girl though so I probably won't be of much help).

Have you considered Tom Ford? Expensive but smells sooooooo good

I like Bleu de Chanel, I used to use it all the time. However I am smelling it more these days so I use it a lot less.
I find that it is a scent more suitable for a night out than everyday use. Good sillage and longevity, and I like the dry down smell as well.

Chanel Allure (all the different ones) are quite good and nice for everyday use.

Good tip. Didn't think it was used so much. What's your fave now? And do you buy your fragrances cheap from somewhere?

      • +1

I still like Bleu. That is my fave so far. I just dont use it as much. I think it suits me very well.

        The ones I use often:
Bvlgari Aqva and issey miyake pour homme, nice and easy for all occasions, I buy them from chemist warehouse

chanel Allure sports and pour homme. Chanel is best bought duty free in airports in Asia.
Even discounted from online retailer they are still pricy.

        I am trying to finish:
Gucci black (It is quite nice but i dont think it suits me)
CK one, very average smell, nothing special, but it is cheap.
Bvlgari Blv, I didnt like it that much, smells like an expensive toilet freshener.

I have one or 2 more that doesnt come to mind.

chanel is the most "exotic" ones I have. If I get a chance, I will try some of Tom Ford or the more expensive Gucci. Maybe when I have more transit time in Singapore Airport

Yes Bleu was very zesty, fresh and alluring to me. A very strong assertive kind of cologne.

Airport prices don't seem cheap: https://www.ishopchangi.com/productlistings/beauty-58/fragra…

        • @joeno:

Airport prices are not as cheap for brands like Bvlgari that you can buy from Chemist warehouse.
For brands like Chanel, Dior that are only available in high end retail store, it is cheaper dutyfree.

I was in Andorra recently. OMG the booze and perfume are CHEEEEEEPPPP

If I remember correctly, I paid AUD$90 for 100ml of Bleu (It has been quite a while I cannot recall exactly) in changi airport

        • That's a nice price. On Fragrancenet La Nuit De L'homme is $70 per 100ml… but I think you need to order at least $100 of stuff to get free shipping?

  • I like Issey Miyake, it's similar to the ones you've listed that you like

    • I'm not gonna lie that stuff smells like straight gasoline.

Anybody tried fragrancenet? They seem to have the best prices.

    • Last year. Quick delivery and well packed which is great when your shipping glass bottles of liquid! Sign up and you'll get 1-2 emails per week with discounts and sales.

      • Thanks. I saw a few days ago free international shipping but it's gone now. Shipping kind of kills it for single purchases. Good prices + $25min shipping.

Know if they frequently have $100+ free international shipping?

  • Black XS by Paco Rabanne

    http://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/56957/Paco-Rabanne-Bl…

Only $40 at Chemist Warehouse at the moment and combine with Cash Rewards and code for free shipping and you're set.

    • Yep i agree. Just go light on it, its pretty strong

    • Reviews are mediocre on fragrantic. And i didn't like the strong herbal smell of 1 million. Is this similar?

  • You need a woody fragrance like Dior's Farenheit because it is hot hot hot.
I love every man who has worn this fragrance and I know when it is being worn.
It is just one of those amazing smells on men.

You will get laid wearing this.

    You're welcome.

At least he knows one person it will work on.

      • I am trying to help him.

I also like Hugo Boss' Baldessarini.
        It's a classy fragrance for a 30's man.

Funny - I always thought Fahrenheit smells like Aerogard

  • Chanel allure sport
    Dior eau savage
    Dior egoiste

  • Hugo Boss Unlimited is delicious

  • +2

Wow I didn't know Ozbargain was so cologne friendly.. I use rexona

  • Acqua di Gio - ladies love it…probably?

  • Can anyone vouch for Bvlgari Soir? I haven't been able to try a tester as all the Chem Warehouse have run out. However it's definitely on sale for a hefty discount.

    • It's okay, but has a very "general" smell.
      Nothing to write home about.

      • Thanks. Will skip it.

  • Creed Aventus is the God-tier for me and worth every scent. The other Creed fragrances are also really good (Green Irish Tweed is quite popular but ripped off by other brands, Silver Mountain Water is good, too, as is Himalaya and a few others).

    • You have expensive taste. My local DJ/Myers doesn't have testers of Aventus so don't think I'm going to blind buy a $400 bottle of cologne hehe

  • Diesel - Only the Brave

    Tommy Hilfiger original.
    Nautica Classic.
    Chrome Azzaro
    Bvlgari BLV.
    Joop! Go.
    Davidoff Coolwater.
    Ralph Lauren Polo.
    CK Euphoria.
    Jimmy Choo Man.
    Juicy Couture Dirty English.

    …or you could use a Brut deodorant : )

  • I love paco rabanne one million. So good.

  • Classic Drakkar & Chevignon user here.

Have you looked and tried anything from Mecca Cosmetica? They have things like Serge Lutens which does more unique fragrances, it's a bit more expensive but the sillage is definitely a lot better. There are also other brands such as Comme Des Garcons which are pretty cool. You can also look into more herbal fragrances such as Jo Malone, a lot of their fragrances are pretty unisex, personally I couldn't find anything I liked from their range, but I've only ever gone to the counter once and it was pretty rushed. There's also Bond No. 9 New York which a lot of people rave about, if you're looking for something unique, then you might want to try some testers. I think they're available at David Jones.

  • Aqua di Gio :P

  • Federico Mahora fragrances are very long lasting, and exactly the same as the mainstream fragrances but at a much more affordable price. They also contain a higher percentage of pure essential oil making them very long lasting.
FM 199 for example, ( IDENTICAL to 1 million) $42 for 100ml, free membership to buy all fragrances for 20- 30 % discount. So FM 199 becomes $29 for free members.
My 17 yr old son drowns himself with it every morning, so the member price is such a huge saving for us.

If anyone would like further info or some FREE samples i'd be delighted to help you find your perfect fragrance match.

  • the ex-GF bought me DIESEL only the brave Tattoo Edn. I must say its a decent long lasting daily fragrance that oozes manliness.
Oh and its got quite a nice bottle… main reason why she bought it was because she liked fisting sorry the fist design.
I personally love the scent of VERSACE Eros.

  • Try Penhaligons which is an English brand. A bit more expensive than most, but I get a crazy amount of compliments on it and they often pop up on Ozsale at a reduced price. Suggest something like Sartorial, Juniper Sling or Opus 1870.

  • Anyone know the cheapest place to get Bleu de Chanel online?

  • Buy the cheapest one you like. The people who smell your cologne only smell it initially. After hanging around you their brain gets used to it. That's why you don't smell it during the day as well. You get accustomed to it. Save your cash! :D
