2gb ram is a joke for Windows 10, plus a almost the slowest CPU, you will be enjoying a click-and-wait PC

    • +3

and "pre-installed Windows 10" usually mean you will need to pay for Windows 10 after 30 days, misleading ads to lure people thought it's comes with license.

      • 4k @ 30hz.

        • -1

seriously what's the frame rate? I bought a i3 2yrs ago but it's struggle with 1080P youtube, not even a real 1080p movie.

        • +3

Errr 30hz is fine for most video content isnt it? Video content and browsing/games are totally different.

        • +4

          @leetec:

A 2 year old i3 would not struggle with 1080P youtube, even with onboard graphics, something is wrong with your Windows.

I have a 9 year old PC that can do 1080P youtube,.

        • @SamR:
PC is not a NUC. The CPU in here is a 6W chip. It's low power. Very different to a desktop class i3 or even desktop Pentium.

        • @promethbastard:
          I never mentioned a NUC

        • @SamR:
Don't mind me, crossing my wires ^_^

      • OEM windows license

Be aware a 2 year old CPU is inside this one. Old NUC model trying to clear stock out.
    1.6Ghz CPU with a boost of 2.4Ghz, 2MB Cache.
This being an old lower spec chip it will likely struggle with any moderate load.

  • I've never understood why these are so expensive.
While Statice says it's not that bad, there is cheaper on eBay.

But here's a NUC with a screen and keyboard that is much better value when the deal is running…

    • Price: US $199.00 + Postage: US $85.58.

      Erm… yeah

      • Oh, yeah - this damn VPN makes me look like i'm in the US, when i'm connected to an Oz node…

Re form factor/parts etc - OK, but i'm still surprised they can build that laptop for $320 but this is only $30 less.

    • I agree there. I also dont blame Kogan for the 2gb ram, its that SKU that comes with 2gb, 32gb.

I see that mwave pccg sells it for $325 $329 so i get there's some discount but the base rrp is crazy… its $239 us rrp… a lot of money for not a lot of speed and parts you need to add (ie. another 2gb module, bigger m2 ssd).

They're expensive than building an equivalent because of the form factor. Also its using mobile parts which are generally more expensive than desktops and less powerful of course.

  • Anyone knows any chance downgrade to Windows XP, or increase memory to 4Gb.
I have ordered but unsure now to return it because of 2 GB RAM.
It will struggle to run anything with Win 10

    • +1

Yes, it can be upgraded. The specifications section in the link lists it.

    • +1

You're far better off getting a current, lightweight distribution of Ubuntu. Something like Lubuntu should run nicely and give you a bit more free memory for applications. At least you'll be getting updates through Ubuntu.

    • +4

Windows XP would be a horrible idea for many reasons.

Windows 10 can hand media playback and Web browsing with 2GB of RAM from experience. I have a compute stick and a tablet that both handle it fine with the z5-8300 CPU. However it is effortless and relatively cheap to add additional RAM which you certainly would do.

Windows 10 runs on modern hardware very well and also on older hardware. I have W10 running on very lousy systems… Pendo Pad with 1.33ghz ATOM processor, old laptop with 2007 era Core 2 Duo @ 2.1ghz, all that low end stuff. It runs smooth. As long as you don't open too many tabs… or use Adobe Flash.

Windows XP you should avoid installing at all cost. It will perform badly because it lacks drivers and such, and most web browsers like FF and Chrome will not support XP (you will be using a very outdated version, usuall an "Extended Support Release" variant which can be prone to malware and exploits)

You can also install Lubuntu or any linux distro with xfce desktop manager, it'll run OK with 2G RAM.

Not to mention Android X86 (TV OS) if you wish to make your own type of Android TV box. This is experimental though and you will encounter bugs.

    • Windows XP - don't even go there

If someone chooses to buy this, I feel sorry for them! You poor thing, OP!

  • +1

Would make a great HTCP with LibreElec. Or even basic desktop stuff. Like other commenters, would recommend a light Linux distro, or for something pretty, ElementaryOS.

  • better off getting this and buy more ram https://www.mwave.com.au/product/asus-vivomini-un45hdm140m-b…

  • +1

This makes a good home server or HTPC, as it is small quiet and low power consumption.

Anyone wanting a cheap general-purpose windows PC should just get a small-form ex-lease office-PC from eBay. That will be cheaper and far higher performance.
The 2 GB is enough for many things, but not for running a modern bloated web browser and office suite!

The cpu in this is equivalent to a Core-2, so I suppose it would be just OK for web use given a RAM upgrade.

  • can you control kodi with a tv remote on this?
