But to activate with Kogan you have to send them all your Private and Identifiable Information over the web, where you have no way of knowing how they might store it, on how many systems, how it will be transferred between them, where their staff and contractors (and whoever else has access now and in the future) can access it and then use it to do practically anything they want.
I checked with them a while back, they wouldn't let me sign up in any other way like the many other providers that are able to verify your choice of photo-identity without taking an actual copy of it, over the counter.
So don't feel bad!
Savings possible using Kogan: a few dollars a month
What's possible when someone anonymous gets hold of your PII: Priceless!
[no way of knowing, etc etc]
Yep. No way of knowing there.
None of that is an undertaking by Kogan that he'll take your PII seriously. It's mostly a copy of Vodafone's standard bilge that promises little and results in less:
It doesn't tell you anything about how or where your PII will actually be stored, transferred, shared or secured. It doesn't limit how many times they can duplicate it, where they can send it, the jurisdictions it is used and stored in, who it will be sold to…
Let alone what controls will be applied to it. If they get hacked and find out it is all compromised, they don't say they'll tell you.
Let alone tell you that they make any regular checks, audits or other details about things they do in case they do the opposite. Which is because they don't do these things, and know they are likely to get caught out making major mistakes if they do.
All you can be sure is that it will be stored duplicated and made available to lots of people all over the world. Call centres that employ people on all kinds of terrible terms and conditions, many of whom have been found selling the info they have access to, as well as updates to it, for a month or a year's wage on a regalar basis.
And all that is the 'acceptable commercial use' of your info, we haven't even begun on what the malicious actors that inhabit most corporate systems today can do with it.
@zerovelocity: i'm not sure i understand your meaning. does Kogan require any more/different information to activate the SIM then any other online-only activation service?
@osaya: I don't know.
But they require more information transferred online than the competition, without adequate safety. And that competition includes Vodafone whose services they resell (as well as your perhaps, your PII). Info that anyone who knows what's what will tell you should not be stored, let alone transferred between computers.
But if you do choose to regularly publish copies of your drivers license or passport online, this may be acceptable to you to net a small saving. Is it worth it though, that depends on your appetite for risk.
@zerovelocity: could you please give some examples of the type of extra information that they require over other competition? i'm about to get the offer, but will think twice if you can provide specific examples.
@osaya: They require digital copies of government identity cards. Government IDs alongside other current and accurate other data is what fraudsters make the most out of trading.
They require digital copies of government identity cards. Government IDs alongside other current and accurate other data is what fraudsters make the most out of trading.
Absolute bullshit. No they don't. A DL number is all they need. Why all the anti Kogan rage?
@Gershom: Really?
Er, I'm not raging, and I'm certainly not swearing either.
When I last created a new account, and tried to signup for a sim, they required digital copies of government IDs.
Are you saying this is no longer the case for a new customer?
But noone should rely on me giving examples, Kogan may require more (or less) info since I tried to signup before. They had a form that submits your data to a third party verification services, that at some point exchanged data with a government API. From a privacy point of view, that is bad enough, but wanting a copy of your license or your passport (to have and to hold, for now and forever, till death and beyond (and in addition to that). This puts your loved ones (certainly anyone that might depend on you now and in future) at risk too.
Remember that they do not need to show anyone that they have deleted it, let alone keep it secure, even when they have no possible need for it anymore. And nobody seems to just delete data just because it gets old.
Might you already have an account with Kogan so their form did not require the digital copy of a government ID? Perhaps they have changed it, I know other online services just do the lookup- Amaysim, for example.
But the fact that Kogan used to require a copy (unless it still does) makes me wonder how much they actually care. Not that Vodafone are any better than Telstra though.
@zerovelocity:
It's just you mate. No one else ever had to do all that, it was just for you. Now maybe step slowly away from the keyboard and have a nice lie down, eh?
@Gershom: No, that is what all customers faced before.
But if what you say is true, it's good they improved their signup process. Because back then, all that info could have been accessed by so many parties, and who knows who else. And anyone that signed up may still have that info accessible now (and by even more).
However just because they no longer require a digital copy of a gov ID now, is no reason to relax. They still store your License or Passport number, numbers that do not change throughout your whole life. And why did they think they should require it before, when digital copies have never been acceptable uses of government issued PII?
After all there is little/no assurance the info you submit today cannot be not sold or abused, or will be at some point without you being told. But naturally, this applies for all providers,
@zerovelocity: I have signed up with Kogan 3 times, the first time 3.5 years ago, the last time 6 months ago. What you describe never, ever, happened. Perhaps you'd feel safer not having a phone service if "there is little/no assurance the info you submit today cannot be not sold or abused, or will be at some point without you being told. But naturally, this applies for all providers,"
@zerovelocity:
Different to any other online sign up how?
Different to any other subscription online how?
You really think anyones information is secure? Heck the tax department and major banks have information stolen from them.
It is a double benefit for Kogan.. the signup ultimately goes to Vodafone for the service and whatever commission they get.. but Kogan still gets a copy of your details without they're own privacy statement protecting it.
I think this is what @zerovelocity is getting at.
Perfect example.. I've purchased a few different iterations of their 365 day prepaids for family members… each time it kept subscribing me back to their newsletter and have to unsubscribe every time… but this is a minor issue and already borders on unsolicited.. who knows who they've onsold my information to.
Targetability is an online currency for retailers where data is king
same as any other telco
@Gershom:
I've signed myself, a friend and 2 relatives up. In each case, all that was needed was a DL number.
They still store your License or Passport number, numbers that do not change throughout your whole life.
hmm, perhaps this has happened to you, but not to us. we've been given a new passport number every time the dfat issues one. driver licence numbers may also change when acquiring a new driver licence in different state or territory.
@whoopdeedoo: Yes… But Kogans not a telco
Yes… But Kogans not a telco

True that but is any network secure these days even a high end network got compromised sony need i say more :)
@stussy: Sony might be 'high end', but not in my mind. They were known for consuming their customers and even attacking them with rootkits, remember? Besides, they are very low care. How a company that led its industry could fall so far is no accident.
Regardless, even with 'secure' organisations getting hacked, it doesn't mean you leave your door open every night, or hand over your PII everytime someone wants to wash your windscreen…
BTW, very few organsiations are any good with security. They give their money to shareholders before building, or maintaining anything properly, let alone well.
Lol true and the funny thing is hackers warned them a month before the incident and sony did nothing to secure it they just let it go and hope for the best :)
@stussy: And not just hackers, imagine what their own devs and IT people were telling their managers about loading up their software with rootkits, let alone practically self-publishing private and confidential data by leaving so many doors wide open.
And a company the size of Sony has audits and all kinds of compliance procedures, that managers have to do to meet their obligations, even if not in their KPIs- which is an obligation for the investors if they wish to avoid disasters like that!
All their valuable fruit was left hanging in the orchard, the gates, and the hen-house, all left unlocked. To think, all those hungry peasants had been storming around for years beforehand and treated so badly by the Lords of the land.
All that, whilst the Chief Execs collected bonuses for scrimping on farm operations, locks, new crop planning, anything they could squeeze profit from, while investors slept.
Strange! I activated by just my driver's licence!!!
Yes. I thought that should all you need as have not done it for a long time.
Anyone knows what they actually need for transferring a no.?
@m2000: The full name of the customer, the account number (if postpaid) and the date of birth.
@m2000:
Transfers are the usual business.
Name, carrier, type of service, date of birth of person.
Not much different to new sign up really.
You would have saved $1.20, not a buck.
If I signed up would the cost of the plan change after 12 months?
Also what network are they on?
Vodafone 4G
Probably
If I signed up would the cost of the plan change after 12 months?
No mate, the cost will be frozen for the rest of eternity.
Thanks.
i wish i could predict the future…. maybe a psychic would be able to answer your question
but id say the odds of kogan offering the EXACT same deal after 12 months will be pretty low i.e yes the cost will probably change
Change for the cheaper that is.
Add $48.76 or $4 a month to get an extra 5GB of data
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/307785
Tempting :)
With all these new 12 months plans with good data allowance popping up… Do they know something that I don't?
Do they expect that the data will be even cheaper in under 12mo, and I will still be stuck with my 5GB till I change?
I just ordered a free SIM from them for my wife on Amaysim As You Go prepaid. Offer expires at the end of July, so have time to re-think
Thinking about it (don't have time to read other posts, must have been covered already) - will probably go on their 14GB plan for 1 month for $4.90 and buy/activate the the 12 month offer for 5GB once its finished
I'm finishing up my 3GB - 1 year plan this month. It went up to 5gb a few months ago.
I'd say it's possible it could go up, but don't bank on it.
I suspect that is the case.
There is lots of competition in the mobile sector, and customers freely move around. Getting them locked in on a contract (through a phone plan, or these pre-paid contracts) is the best way to save money from a businesses point of view. But, it must still be profitable over the 12 months.
Take this Jeenee Plan for example, $9.90 for 1.5GB of data for 6 months. Could there be significant changes at the start of the next financial year?
Either way, it reinforces the economics of buying a mid-range phone outright and going on a SIM-Only plan vs signing up to a 24 month contract.
Don't be too eager to lock in a contract. Read this………
http://www.news.com.au/finance/money/budgeting/unlimited-dat…
Maybe, but won't be in the same Budget Ballpark as this deal
Unlimited calls is so 2013.
Give me unlimited data and I'll cave in ;)
Then NBN will die or we will be getting 2G speeds on 4G network
I once suggested a friend that was starting some telco business to come up with a plan that combines ADSL/Broadband and mobile data, where you can switch between the 2 at some ration rate. That never happened
Look up vivid-wireless. I'm using their 4G network for unlimited data as my internet service provider at $89.00 per month.
@Tech and cars: I know of Vivid. Don't know what they are like since Optus bought them. Very mixed reviews
I have vivid . Made a website with my referral link and got 12 months free (with 12 referrals in around 2 months time) plus 2 free months on signup (referral signup and GG free month)
I would genuinely rate them 11/10!! I think if you live in the city, and you have reasonably 4g speeds on your phone, you'll be fine.
I watch a lot of netflix content and update my steam library on PC (which consistently hits 1.2-1.5mb/s).
I'm very happy with it. Recommended to a few friends who have said the same.
Wow, where did you make your website!? I used the OzB referral and have got 2 months of free thanks to some kind strangers.
Bought a cheap domain and used a free google Adwords trial offer for traffic
This was primarily an personal experiment that went really well
up to 10mbps. Not really 4G
2 devices streaming full quality netflix. Gaming with low ping. Honestly - it's been more than enough for me. It's always consistent, peak or offpeak.
My parents have ADSL2+ with optus which is technically 25mbps… On a good day they get 6mbps. When it's peak time they get 1.5-2mbps.
I'm happy with it.
I used 477GB last month on Netflix alone so it's true 4G
And it's faster than my previous TPG adsl2+
What's your speed like? Where are you located?
I've read a lot of mixed reviews and I noted they restrict a lot of peoples connections to 10/1.
@easternculture: Their own site says the theoretical max is 10/1: https://www.vividwireless.com.au/content/what-speeds-can-i-g…
Using 477 GB in a month is not evidence against this.
Seconds in a month = (30 days * 24 hours * 60 minutes * 60 seconds) = 2592000
10 Mbit/s => let's assume ~1 MByte/s => theoretically you can download 2592000 MBytes a month.
That's 2.5 TB.
"Proper" 4G can approach 1 Gbit/s, but more practically I've seen ~170/30 from Telstra on a good day, ~110/30 from Optus, etc. In a poorer signal area you could expect maybe 15-30/5.
10/1 is below standard 4G even in poor signal areas. It's barely above HSPA, though at least latency is lower.
@easternculture: Good job!
How does the modem come to the modem they provide ? not 4g?
I think it's some other spectrum?
It's 4G LTE on the 2300 MHz spectrum
@easternculture: what about uploads? would be awesome to see a speedtest
@SergeyAU: I got Vivid when I moved to Sydney earlier this year since the installation was simple and I needed broadband urgently. Have had a great experience so far. I average around 120 GB a month. The speed is usually good and so far there has been only one short service outage
@JetBombat: [This] (http://beta.speedtest.net/result/6307244049.png) is what I get (Epping NSW)
Kogan : you can't access 4g while you are on call.
Dont think it is possible with vodafone or optus either. Not sure about Telstra.
I got that update from csr when i raise issue why i get only h+ only while on call
You can enable VoLTE with Vodafone, so still on 4G during phone call.
Edit: with compatible mobile device.
But VoLTE will eat into your data.
@Wokstar: VoLTE doesn't cost you data. The link cleverbook posted states as much.
is Kogan good? I have been using Vodafone all this while in Melbourne CBD.
it uses the vodafone network.
Support is non-existent
Been with Voda for years like you.
Got sick of paying three times as much and only getting a really cruddy phone option.
So bought a phone outright and jumped on this a couple of months ago.
Unless you need access overseas its on par with service I had on vodafone itself (as someone else said it uses vodafone).
Customer care can be a bit shit…but my issue was with porting a number and a problem with my card. Granted the call centre wait times are less than I've had on other Australian call centres…and when they say someone will call you back…they do.
Vodafone network… Is it still as bad as it was a few years ago?
No
It's actually twice as fast as Optus where I live.
You need a phone with band 5 to use its enhanced 4g network.
Vodafone doesn't use b28

For all the Xiaomi/Oneplus/other chinadroid owners, Vodafone's the easiest network to connect to band wise due to that lack of band 28.
While i don't really expect my 1GB plan to be any cheaper, extra data [like the other plans got] would be really nice, PLEASE!
So what happens after 12 months? Do they revert to some expensive plan?
while waiting for reply myself…
I don't think you would want to be on the same plan in 12 month time. Looks like there will be a new 7GB plan offer or just more to a diff company
It's prepaid. There's no obligation after the period
it ends
It's a prepaid plan. After 12 months, it just stops. It doesn't automatically rollover to anything - you have to buy a new plan (whatever is on offer at the time) or port to someone else.
Im not sure it like that;
its a voucher youre buying, and then you use that to pay when you sign up to the plan. So if "auto recharge" is selected when you sign up, then that is what will likely happen, in 365 days, at the 365 day rate. Dont have auto recharge selected and I believe you should be OK. I think you can also change it in "Account Settings".
Great value plans. Ive got all my family on different size plans, as Karl Marx said (if he was writing today)..to each according to their wants.
now i expect the 1gb plan to come for $5 so i can use it in my watch :)
noob question am new to prepaid - can i buy this now and then activate it 1 ~ 2 months down the road?
Should be ok according to terms and conditions
Voucher expires at 11:59pm AEST on 31/08/2017. Activation or recharge must be made before the voucher expiry date.
sweet! thanks mate, might take the plunge and use prepaid, my voda plan's expiring in a month or so
Long enough to keep it until the $5 for the first month combo expires
Is this better than Lebara?
Also interested to know this.
Are you blokes for real? Sheesh!
nice got 14gb for 4.95
I have two bonus data packs on my current kogan plan. I am up for a 12 month recharge.
Does anyone know if the bonus data packs roll over onto your new recharge? I suspect they don't but thought someone on here may know. Thanks.
They don't.
unlimited calls include 1300 & 1800 too?
Yep :)
anyone know what Voda's reception is like in Newcastle area these days?
aw damn i jumped on at $17 a month, couldve saved a buck
