eBay buyer bid more than my buy now price, does it sound dodgy?

Hi all,

i have been a ebay buyer for a long time, but, this is the first time i sold something more than $200. I am surprised & confused when a buyer bought my stuff for more than what i put as my buy now price.

starting bid was $190
Buy now was $230

a seller with high rating bought it for $250, and i have got the notification from paypal saying the payment is onhold and me to update tracking number.

Paypal page reads as follows,

"Make sure you add your shipping or tracking information. This payment will be held in your pending balance until 1 June 2017. It may be available sooner, once we know the transaction went smoothly"

Seller Protection
May be eligible

Eligible when you…
Ship to the address on this page
Save your tracking or shipping information

i would like to ship it tomorrow to him, before that…i want to make sure i dont lose my stuff & money.

is there any foul play you see? why would he bid more than my buy now price? is it normal that paypal holds the payment? is seller protection reliable?

appreciate your opinions….

thanks for your response guys, just got the buyer's message, he says keep the money and send purchased item, gonna send it out thru "registered post with signature required to be on a safer side"

Did someone else bid? If someone bids the buy now disapears and it turns to an auction. Sounds like you lucked out

    • nope, it was just one bid….

      • it couldn't have been one bid, because if it was, it would have been 190.

It had to be someone else bidding as well, or at least another ID bidding, to drive the price up.

does the bidder happen to work in an oil rig? if so. then. go for it. its legit.

    • ha ha…i wish

send the buyer a message saying that payment is on hold and you'll ship the item once it has cleared.

    is your ebay account new-ish?

    • +2

You need to post it normally and the payment is released once all is good and delivered

well, post with signature on delivery.

OP - what was the item?

have you checked your actual paypal account to see what it says there?

I had a bloke negotiate a price for something I was selling - I sent him an invoice via ebay. he then said "I've paid you via paypal, can you ship it now?" checked paypal and nothing. the next day he messaged me again -"I need it soon, I've paid, can you send it". yeah, nah - paypal - zip, zally, nothing. ignored him and never heard from him again.

    • hi Altomic, like is said…i have been with ebay for almost 9 years now. like i said…i have bought like 40 times and sold a few (3 items so far) nothing more than $30.

my sales were usually cash on pickup never dealt with paypal as a seller…

  • I've had that happen before. As the first comment said, once someone bids, it turns into an auction with no Buy It now price.

As long as your PayPal account shows they have paid, send it, but make sure it's registered post with Signature on Delivery

This happened to me with regards to a PS4 I had won that I was selling (already had a PS4). It was sealed in the box.

The dude bought my PS4 for $530 LOL even though my buy it now was like $470, and you could buy them from a store for about $499.

I felt really bad, so when he turned up to pick it up I gave him maybe two or three games I didn't like. He was absolutely ecstatic!

    • i bet he didnt leave feedback either.

      • thats right, he didnt… but, i dont see a reason why not, he hasn't received his purchased item yet. i usually put my feedback only after i receive my item and if its same as what i wanted.

again, i am next to none with my ebay experience.

    • thats exactly what i feel like now….i sent a note to him saying i am happy to give him $20 back, havent heard from him though.

when i was looking around, i found a note from ebay (may be a regular note to first time seller thru paypal??!!)

  • That's the good thing about eBay: there's a larger percentage of idiots just because that's where the most people are.

    • it makes me feel bad though!! i can see you can buy brand new item for $250 (from overseas)….i never hoped to get 250 to be honest, as i said my starting bid was 190…i would have given it to him even if it bid 190. on top…my buynow price was 230.

and i am happy to give him $20 cash to feel better (its a win win)

buy it now prices disappear once someone bids so most likely they didn't even see the BIN price.
Ive see lots of listings with BIN go above the BIN price in auction which is why i mostly keep away from auctions.

thanks mate, but, it was the only bid…

i sent a note to buyer saying i am ok with $230 and happy to refund $20. lets see…

How can it have been the only bid? If your start price is $190 and someone places a max bid of $230, eBay's automatic bid system will place a bid of $190 on their behalf and only increase it if someone else bids more.

thats why i am here, i have no idea….

i just dont want to feel bad…. more importantly, i dont want to lose my item and the money (definitely the second one is more of me).

        • @Damnsmart: if you give him $20 and he pulls a shifty on you, you'll be out of pocket an extra $20 as well.

        • @niggard:

Thats right!! Obviously i dont want that.

        • @Damnsmart: His loss. Don't offer him $20 and send the item signature on delivery. That way he can't pull a shifty on you.

        • @niggard:

just got his response, he says "keep the money" and send the purchase. will be sending it out thru "registered post with signature required"….sounds like it will be ok…

        • @niggard: Yeah I wouldn't refund the 20 until you got the full balance into your account

  • well at least you can put that extra winnings into eBay and PayPal bill for using their service.

  • it sounds very weird. I have sold many items on ebay/paypal and have never had a paypal message saying funds are withheld until item is sent. I would make sure the money is fully cleared before sending…

    • eBay does it for the first 25 items users sell, introduced it about 2 years ago.

  • Possible money laundering trick

  • Are you the first time seller, paypal usually hold on your money on your first few selling. it is quiet normal

    • Yes….first time thru paypal.

      • That is why, it is paypal security measure.

You better add extra on signature on delevery to make sure that had been proper received. Then you will be save
