Officeworks price matched a (grey) website for me

TL;DR; Tried to get OfficeWorks to price match Apples Educational program discount but they offered to price match a website deal that was cheaper!

I was after 2 iPads for my daughters and made my comments research in here (as usual) to get a better understanding of pricing and whatnot.

Ended up in this deal here:

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/302272

Which was fine, but one of the comment threads mentioned OfficeWorks price matching the Apples Educational program discount. People getting it in the store, by phone, getting rejected… So I thought I could give it a go.

I went to XXX store and the guy pretty much cut me saying "Well, just retail".

I called the YYY store and the guy was completely clueless on what I wanted and said "Highly doubt Apple would sell cheaper than us but it they do, yeah, we price match".

When I went to the store, they said the same thing as the other store "Sorry man, just retail".

And I kinda went further "But… A friend of mine (lol random OzBargainer) had it price matched… Does it vary from store to store??". The guy sighed and said, come here I'll see what I can do.

At that point I thought he would just give me like a $5 discount or some lame frebie or something. Then, he went online to "ifrog.com.au" (the same site of the bargain I read the comments) and said: "What I can do is price match their price + delivery". Which, for my complete disbelieve, WOULD BE CHEAPER than Apples discount!!!

We went to the counter, he told the chick what would be the price to match. He left and the conversation with her was:

She: So, whats the name of the store?
Me: "ifrog.com.au"
She: A website? They have a physical store?
Me: … ehrm… Yes.. I guess… Yes
She (a bit suspicious): Do they have a physical store or not??
Me: Yes. Sure they have. They must have, I guess…
She: Yes or No?
Me: YES.
She: Ok.

A paid as fast as I could and got the hell out of there before someone could change minds about it.

Basically I saved almost 200 dollars on that.

:) Finally something went my way!

I've price matched ifrog on Macs before too. They're an authorised reseller of Apple so I don't think they're grey?

    • Good point… But they are definitely not a physical store, which I think is the first check point for their price match…

But hey, if it's not, is still a (steal) deal :)

iFrog do have a physical store FYI. I posted the original deal and it is local stock (not grey import) and they have stores under their main business name (Queensland computers).

Officeworks policy does not require them to be a local store, but if they aren't local, they have to include postage as part of their price match price.

      • Yeah there isnt a requirement for the store to be a physical store, however if it is online then they do have to include the postage cost as well

I used to work at OW

      • They don't have to have a physical store.

The reason they ask is because if iFrog didn't have a store and it charges for postage, then Officeworks is supposed to factor it into the price.

So it looks like it's a completely legit price beat. They did not price beat a grey import. Move on now.

Also, that guy will probably lose his job (or get a warning) if someone from Officeworks sees what you've posted above. They can check the price match details against the store to work out the transaction. Perhaps edit the content to de-identify them a bit if you really were grateful for their service

Dont see what the guy in the store did that was against the rules of pricematch. Price matching against an online store is allowed as long as you add in postage costs..

I agree completely. What I am saying is that it is not allowed for staff to go and find websites to price beat for customers.

If that were the case, staff would be constantly looking for websites for customers, and it wouldn't be a price matching policy.

Ive done it before as well. Customers have come in and had a 'genuine' price match only to find out that its excluded for xyz. If its not busy and theyre a genuine customer then assisting them to find another price match is good customer service. As long as the new price match still meets all the requirements. 95% of the time though i would just say nah sorry it cant be beat for this reason full price or gtfo

I never had any trouble from management or anything (and my manager was a btard sometimes about price matching too lol)

@k-rokfm: And that is fine, however posting details that identify the staff member on a public forum is perhaps unwise.

You probably didn't get in trouble because you weren't posted on a public forum praising you for bending the rules somewhat.

I say this out of concern for the staff member.
