New Car Extras - Are They Worth It?

Considering a new car.

There is a $2,000 premium for leather seats, metallic paint, alloy wheels on the Hyundai i30 that I'm considering.

Just wondering if the extra is worth it, if it will make a difference to my resale value.

Reason why I'm considering the leather seats is because I have 3 kids, between 4 and 11. Leather seats will be easier to clean.

Alternative is to get the fabric version, then pay for seat covers to protect the material until they get older. No idea on cost, but the wooly types feels nice. Not easy to clean though.

    • Fair enough, but I'm onto my second new car in 13 years. The first one cost me $16000, and I had it for more than ten years, then sold it for $3000. My current one cost me $26000, and I intend to hold onto it for 10-15 years provided all goes well.

The cost per year for the car is worth it for me, because I'm not spending that much to begin with. I have previously bought cars for $2000-5000, kept them for around 2 years and then moved on due to the ongoing troubles that came with buying these cheaper cars that hadn't been kept in great condition.

I'm happy with my my decision to have a new car because things rarely go wrong with them, and I keep them serviced. I wouldn't want to spend much more than I did on this last car though, because then the depreciation kicks in even more severely.

Do people actually buy cars and worry about resale value? Every car will go down regardless be it toyota or mercedes, just live a little and buy what you can afford and enjoy it you'll forget all about resell and that nonsense once you have it in your drive way, it's just unneccesory stress.

If you can afford the extra $2000 without burdening the rest of your life then i say go get it

    • People that upgrade every few years will consider resale value. I don't personally, I buy a car with the intention that I will keep it for a long time and only change over when situation changes and cop whatever resale value on the chin.

Because op has bought the car, thus making the replies to this thread largely pointless…

I recommend that you purchase a potato

  • Considering the recent heat weather, I would say go for fabric.

  • Why would you care about resale value unless you're rich and buying a new car every 1-2 years? You're buying it for yourself to enjoy, not whoever comes next, that would be like making your girlfriend keep a traditional hairstyle instead of changing it to something interesting so that she's more appealing to the next boring guy after she dumps you!

  • Since it's a Hyundai i30, an already cheap car; I'd just go as basic as possible and buy something nicer later

  • Love my electric leather seats, wish I'd got the heated seat, for when my back gets sore on those long trips

  • For good resale value, should think above Honda HRV, 25k you might get it now for EOFY sale, big enough to put whole family in it.

  • If you are worried about resale value, I wouldn't be buying an i30… (I bought one recently) If the extras are useful, or u like the look of them and can afford… then get them… The extras I got (afterwards) were, the dash cover, rubber mats, rubber boot lining. I would get the scuff plates for the doors and the reverse camera if i had the extra scratch too.

  • Test drove new Civic today. Damn good car too bad they are not offering good deals.

  • i'd get the option pack but as stated they will become more desperate especially closer we get to end of financial year

Never let them bluff or bully you there is always something else even if they tell you otherwise.

This was my lesson in negotiation "don't be intimidated and don't be afraid to walk away"

Me and my old man went out to buy my little brother a car one day and i will say John Hughes is a man of his word for those from WA

We were getting down to the bits and bobs tinting paint protection etc. and the head of sales he had tried to call our bluff trying on the no these are extra's were not what we had authorised saying we couldn't even buy the car for the price we were negotiating

So out come the chest and he said guys come on people try this on all the time, do you think i'm that stupid, and that never in a million years could we get the car for the price we negotiated. "and called us out in front of the whole showroom" So we started to walk off we had the deal from the other yard.

Still not happy he shouted out out come on and be serious we kept walking and he said if you can buy the car for that price i'd put every single option you want on it, being a smart ass

We turned round and said see you in a few hours and walked out.

We went to the other factory dealer bought the car and asked the salesman to pull all the options and we told him what happened.

We drove back into John Hughes who was actually there that day closing a big sale

We walked up to his sales manager and he said "i tried to warn you that you misunderstood, I'll do the best i can for you but you walked on the deal that was on the table. and a lot of that was done in good faith. my old man said oh where not here for that were here for the extra's you promised. the guy had gone from smug to embarrassed look and he walked off and said get out of here you're just embarrassing yourself.

So we did his trick and called him out in front of the whole showroom

John Hughes walked out of his office to see what was going on it was a short conversation after that.

He asked his sales manager did you say that.. the rest of the team were there so he tried to weasel out of it saying we provided false information and we were being petty.

I'll ask you again before i ask the others did you say it "his face was bright red and he quietly said yes but they don't have a car yet.

My old man said i've got the invoice in my pocket

John said right go get it f(%(& organised and that will teach you for being smug we will discuss the rest later.

so we bought the car at the cheapest price possible from the other factory dealer and courtesy of the smart ass at john Hughes we got every optional upgrade.

    • Did they actually pay up? I was told the same thing by a dealer once never went back to get my extras.

He said I would forget about the extras if you can get the car for that price (from another dealer) I would give you the extras for free.

yep, paid in full or completed the works as discussed that his loudmouth sales manager tried to get out out of plus a couple of extras from JH himself. (all lined up and completed within the week.

So i've not seen a businessman act in that way before backing his customer over the sales manager.

If the sales manager hadn't of tried be the big man and embarrass himself in front of the staff and customers perhaps a different outcome would have occurred and he wouldn't have had to try cowering in his office trying to avoid us.

full credit to JH on this one
