Very good flashlight for it's price/performance range. Just a note that it does get quite hot on the max setting, but that's to be expected. I recommend using Panasonic 18650NCR 3400mAh, i use these batteries to power my S2 and it lasts a long time.

    • hello, may I know which type of the NCR18650 will fit (flat top/nipple tipped/others)? Thanks

I just use flat top ones, i haven't tried the others.

        • Thank you MysticalWok!

  • Can I use Sony vtc4's in this safely?

    • Yes, if you know how to handle Unprotected Li-Ion rechargeable batteries.

LED emissions from the company Cree can be found here: http://flashlightwiki.com/Cree

  • I have a whole load of unprotected Sanyo & Samsung 18650 batteries. Is there a simple enough way to add protection to these batteries to safely using with these torches?

    "Torch"

  • Is it suitable for a push bike? How would you attach it?

    • Torches can be mounted to bikes with a suitable holder:
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360-Bike-Cycling-Torch-Bracket-Mu…

But you can also get zoomable 18650-battery-taking torches for less than $5 like this:
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/8000LM-T6-XML-LED-Zoomable-Flashl…

And countless other bike-related lights…so I don't really see the appeal of this torch here, personally. Certainly not for bang-for- buck or bike purposes.

      • Cool, ta mate

Just FYI, this is leagues ahead of the cheap zoomie 18650 lights, although it would be nice if there was a neutral white version on sale as well. It is much better built and the range of outputs is much wider. Plus, when you're addicted to collecting lights, the convoys are really easy to mod.

        • @ebosh:
I already have several cheap zoomable ones (under $5 and under $8). My only complaint is there isn't a setting that goes low (dim) enough to make the battery last. Build quality is great. Light output is great (much more than I need). Zoom mechanism is smooth.

        • @cheepwun: if you're happy with what you've got, then there is no need to get anything better I suppose. Having said that, the right S2+ with a neutral white emitter will give you plenty of output as well as a nice low mode (and a few levels in between). I'm positive you would immediately notice how much better they are, but again, we're talking double the price (still less than $20 though)

    • Supposedly this one has quite a good beam pattern for cycling. It is one I looked at buying for this purpose but I eventually bought locally

  • Does anyone have suggestions for where to buy these batteries and a good charger for them? Just want them for some really bright camping torches.

Nitecore D2 and Nitecore D4 are both good chargers. So is the Liitokala Lii-500. And plenty of others from your favourite Chinese vendor. Personally I got my 18650s from old laptop battery packs, but you can probably try candlepowerforums.com and ask for reputable suppliers of 18650 batteries. Lots of Chinese batteries don't get half the claimed capacity. Personally I wouldn't risk buying them from a non-reputable vendor. Lots of USB power banks have them inside too. Same story for power tool battery packs.

  • Mine arrived a couple of days ago. I've not spent a great deal of time playing around with it but it's a great little torch for the money. Quality seems very good. The packaging was rubbish - a simple cardboard box with no padding that was squashed on arrival - but the torch is very similar to my Astrolux S1 that cost twice as much and is certainly not twice as good. So far I'm very happy with the purchase. Tempted to get another, just coz.
