Best Rate for Changing AUD into NZD

Mrs Cheap Branners and I are going to Kiwiland for a week and we will be needing some NZ bucks.
I have not been for a few years, and even then I remember I got fleeced on the exchange by my local bank.
Any advice for the best exchange rate? Some have suggested a local version of the Aussie banks, some said use a Woolworths checkout.
Any experienced ditch crossers have some input.
Thanks, cuzzies and bro's.

How about a Citibank Debit Card?

Look into it, it served us very well in Europe for 3 weeks.

Basically, no fees and good exchange rate

  • Im in a similar situation, anything for cash?

Get a permanent marker and write "NZ" before "dollars" on each note. Almost a parity anyways.

      • Pretty sure that's illegal.

pffft, next you'll be saying it's illegal to smelt coins when the metal exceeds the face value.

      • I guess that might work. I've been adding zeros to my notes anyway.

        • Kiwis will to too sheepish to realise the difference. You're onto a winner.

    • Why do you need cash?

Get the Citibank card and your bank currency card as a backup. Everywhere uses card these days and if you find a place (say a cafe) that doesn't… Go to another one.

      • Assuming no stores, including small business stores, have a minimum spend for eftpos, buying a $2 item with card is a bit mean.

  • If you do need to convert AU cash in NZ. Try the PostOffice bank. Found that their rates were the best for cash

  • If you're in Melbourne I recommend everforex.com they have an office in the CBD and the exchange rates have been good for USD. Someone else has recommended kvb kunlun but I don't think they publish rates online.

  • I went to NZ for 12 days last December and did not use cash at all. I paid every bill by card. Little NZ cafes are much more likely to accept a card than Aussie ones, even though one did charge me 50c for the privilege.

  • Normally cards are either live exchange rates or its prepaid. I heard there was this card from a bank where the bank holds the funds until the exchange rate is low, thus saving you money. Anyone know if this still exist and which card does this( this wasn't a prepaid card btw)?
