Hi I am travelling to South island in March for 2 1/2 weeks, travelling following the transalpine train route and sceneries. Any recommended things to do or place to visit?
My other question is how frequently do I have to pay in cash over there and how much and where to change AUD to NZD? Are they as much as an "EFTPOS" country like Oz?
I already have a Citibank debit.
Exactly what I did. Avoided ANZ, but all else fee free that I encountered. Almost everywhere accepted the card except didn't work a few times in take away food places, so just made sure has a few hundred cash handy in case.

Nope, not the plus.
My experience is that Visa/Eftpos is accepted even more universally in NZ than it is in Australia.
For cash, ATMs (with the Citibank Plus account) is the way to go.

Just withdraw using your citibank card when you get there.
Out of the maybe dozen times I withdrew money while I was there a year ago using various branded ATMs, only one ATM wanted to charge me a fee - ANZ. So I just went to the different branded one behind it.
