This is a good price for these headphones, but I highly recommend watching this review: (It was great finding someone who has a similar view of the M50x).

I think for the general public that think beats are good headphones will find these pair of headphones would be an up on overall sound improvement, not that it takes much effort.

With sound being a (somewhat) subjective topic, I still always recommend trying out any pair of headphones before buying them.

      • With sound being a (somewhat) subjective topic

Enjoyment of sound is subjective, however, reproduction of recorded sound is totally scientific objective topic. Listen to Andrew Jones halfway through this interview with Patrick Norton about speaker design.
These are genuine professional headphones - their job is to truthfully render source content in studio environment. Truth is mostly boring.

I didn't find their sound quality to be spectacular either..

      • Same here, I personally found the mids recessed for my liking. I'm loving the xiaomi hybrid earphones though!

The mids do feel a bit recessed compared to some other headphones.
The Xiaomi hybrid's a spectacular earphones for the price, I have like 3 pairs of them haha :P

  • I have one of these, I would day they're very good for the price.

  • I like the sound from them. I wouldn't pay full price, but at this price it's a good buy.

'professional' is such a meaningless word now. What profession, exactly, are these specific to? Guys who listen to iphones on trains? Dudes wanting to knock out a quick raid on Terramorphous before bed without upsetting their girlfriend?

  • Sennheiser HD598 is better :)

    • +1

HD598 is open, not an option of commuters.

      • Also not an option when you use them late at night and don't want to wake people up.

Save your money and buy the cheaper ATH-M40x's - they're better ;)

Have both and M50x is definitely better in my opinion but whether or not it's worth paying $50 is up to you. This difference is even more noticeable when plugged into a AMP.

What's the difference between these and the cheaper ATH-M50? I recall purchasing my ATH-M50 headphones on Amazon several years ago for around $100. The material on the earpads fell apart rather quickly but aside from that, I was happy with them. They've broken now though so I'm looking to get a new pair.

    • Removeable cable.
      That's about it.

    • Removeable cable.
      That's about it.

Pretty much that. The M50x comes with 3 different length cables inside the box (1.2m straight, 1.2m coiled, 3m straight).

The cable does lock in place on the headphones so you don't want to worry about yanking it out accidentally.

On the off note, I do find most of my headphones breaking from the cable, so this was somewhat of selling point for me.

    • Purchased the same in 2012 for AU$100 from Amazon. Ive never heard of tech going up in price. Must be very little competition or advancement in the headphone market since then.

  • There's refurbished headphones on Amazon but they don't ship to Australia. Anybody know where I might be able to buy a refurbished pair locally?

Not sure what you're getting from "refurbished" that you won't get from "used" …

      • a warranty

    • Considering that it's $110 USD (~$146 AUD), it'd still be worth buying it new locally if you were to get a US forwarder (~$20ish, depending)

But I would consider picking up a pair locally for that price, as headphones don't really degrade/de-value.

  • as a style icon its ok

    Forget it then.

    • The selling point is the sound/build quality, I don't think they look bad either.

If you're after a "style icon" or branding, just get a pair of beats.
