  • I've been eyeing this for a few days but how does the 20% VAT refund work?

    • State it on your purchase order comments & they will refund your PayPal account on the day it's delivered when you notify them

      • I messaged the guy and he said the same thing (VAT refunded on delivery). Thanks yoyomablue, I'm going ahead with the purchase.

        • I bought 2 & going to self install - YouTube videos are self explanatory.
Both of mine were unbroken security seal, so are brand new (unlike comment below)

        • @yoyomablue: I'm open to self install but when I was looking at videos, I thought I'd probably end up making a mess of it so probably best to pay an expert to do it properly.

Interested to hear from you after you've completed the self installs.

        • @Boba: installed one. Not difficult, except you need to ensure the cable sits behind the curtain airbag, when running under the header trim.

        • @Boba: installed the second - easier than the first. Make sure the rear camera is installed the right way up - the printed text will be upside down when installed correctly.
As for Parking Mode recording feature, I am getting 12 hours running on motion detection direct from the battery so far. The settings have a cutoff feature when the voltage drops below your set limit - I set mine at 12.1 volts. So I doubt I will buy the $300 Cellink B battery.
The road safety camera feature is a nice bonus - distinguishes between red light, speed, combined red light/speed cameras & mobile speed camera zones (which can be a little annoying if you have a lot of zones near your house like me).
On one of the cars, I also use the forward collision warning feature which is effective & the lane departure warning, which isn't is as effective but ok, as the car is already a metre over the line before alerting.

  • So what warranty do you get for a $345 dash cam?

    • Updated description - 1 year warranty

      • Will you ship it back?

        • I'd probably contact Thinkware Australia

        • +2

          @yoyomablue:
Don't, you will be wasting your time. You will have to send it back to the country you purchased it from. They can tell which unit comes from which country and they don't honor the warranty if it's purchased somewhere else.

        • @azzajess:
          That's correct

  • +1

I also suggest you buy this if you want to record in parked mode & not drain your car's battery

    • 6000mAh battery. Would you be better off with a few bricks of xiaomi battery packs?

      • +4

Measuring battery capacity in mAh is a stupid idea and leads to people making the wrong conclusion regarding capacity.
This is not your fault, you're just not fully informed.

The battery that @yoyomablue linked to is a 12.8v 6000mAh pack, yielding a theoretical 76.8 Wh capacity.
For comparison sake a 10,000 mAh Xiaomi pack is typically 3 x 3.7v 3.3Ah cells in parallel, with a theoretical total pack capacity of 37Wh

Also has a charger that can just about fully charge the 78Wh in 1 hour, whereas a battery bank with 1/2 the capacity can take 6-12 hours to charge.

In all fairness it's not your standard Lithium Ion cells.
Uses Lithium Ion Phosphate cells which are pretty safe and have a very high cyclic life.
Also has a charger that can just about fully charge the 78Wh in 1 hour, whereas a battery bank
My personal opinion is that with everything above factored in it's still a little pricey.

  • C5AUS code not working for me. It does, then disappears and total reverts to full price. Perhaps I have already used it.

What were you charged in total, you seem unsure. Did you use the 5% off and cashrewards? Did your pay $421 or $445?

        • @Maverick-au:

I got the 5% discount (use browser)
+ paid ebay shipping. Total $236.55GBP
There was an xtra shipping charge ontop of the $236.55 and not ebay related, seperate transaction automatically charged by paypal not ebay. it was for a freight forwarder company (Pitney Bowes)

I got emails saying it was sent to some forwarder company (Global Shipping Centre).
And now they sending it to me, it wasnt direct thats y.

If you can't do basic maths why do you purchase online? Here are the facts.

The price of the product (not the postage) is £248.99.
With the 5% discount on the purchase price you paid £236.55.
Postage (via PB) is £13.61 and this is sent separately by PayPal.

You paid a total of £250.16 for the transaction.

Next the seller will refund the VAT paid on the product which on £248.99 is £41.50 this takes your total payment to £250.16 - £41.50 = £208.66 or at todays exchange rate AU $356.93.

Don't believe me? Read the email from PayPal that has the details of the payment, look at the ebay listing, get someone who can do basic maths and get them to do the calculations. You didn't pay extra for postage!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got emails saying it was sent to some forwarder company (Global Shipping Centre).
And now they sending it to me, it wasnt direct thats y.

Well DUH, how many times does it have to be explained! The GSP allows people to sell overseas without having to do the paperwork. They supply the dimensions of the product and the weight and the rest is done for them. They sell the product, they are sent a prepaid label and they post the product to the GSP who puts on the customs paperwork and sends the parcels in bulk which keeps the postage costs down. Not that hard to understand and easy to find out about but you keep wanting to whine about how you were apparently ripped off.

FWIW - I purchased 2 of these dashcams from this particular seller at different times. First purchase was a good experience and everything fine. Second one, the seller sent what was clearly a returned unit as the security seal had been broken and some other tell tale signs to suggest not brand new. Seller appeared indifferent to the situation despite talking the talk that all items are brand new and 'fixing it'. Seller after 2 emails stopped responding simply when I asked, how after I returned the item, they would "look after me". First email reply stated they opened the box to check contents before shipping - my reply was this didn't happen in first order where security seal was intact. I didn't return the item as seller never confirmed returned address. Happened just before Xmas 4 days before leaving O/S for a month. It may be the cheapest place to get this cam, but I won't buy from again.

    • This is a pretty big deal breaker. Any seller who tries to pass off anything already opened as 'Brand New' is not trustworthy in my book

      • Sellers do open to test if item is not DOA.
To check the contents before shipping to eliminate false claims from dodgy buyers.

        • Thinkware specifically states on the security seal NOT to accept the product if the seal is broken. I find it dodgy that a Seller would actually contemplate doing such a thing. Seal unbroken, its an issue for Thinkware QC - seal broken not a Thinkware problem and becomes an issue for the Seller. Why would a Seller put themselves in such a position?

        • @ATD:
Cause of too many dodgy buyers with fraudulent claims on eBay and in the world.

Thinkware QC is not affected as seller is not manufacturing the device but simply checking the contents and making sure it's not DOA.

    • Thanks for the information and this definitely breaks their trustworthiness. From their responses, they obviously did not indicate they opened the box for checking DOA. It feels like they knew they were sending you a used unit and then "look after you" because you complained.

I was about to buy from this seller. Now I might not.

      • The two I purchased were untouched

        • Thanks for the info :)

      • I hot email froma ebay saying ita going through customs successfully
        I believe customs open it

    • With my order, I got this message from eBay's Global Shipping Program.

"We are writing to inform you that your GSP order is currently under review for potential prohibited items and may experience a delay of 3-5 business days. "

So the seal might be broken by customs but I'm still expecting it to be new.

    • Pretty sure its the customs they open it to check
Happened to many of my overseas orders before

      • Don't know how you could say that without any knowledge. If customs open it, they must leave a note informing that they have done so. Secondly, the external packaging was not open, cut, accessed etc - only the seal to the cam box. Thirdly, the Seller said they had opened the box. As I noted in my first post, there were indicators to suggest this was a return which had a known fault with some of these cams.

        • Cool
          Unlucky for u isnt it

        • @XucCac: Yeah, but there is a funny side to it though…reading comments that spread misinformation from someone who doesn't know what they are talking about. lol - funny eh?

        • @ATD: unlucky for u then..

      • Pretty sure its the customs they open it to check

        They do?

Happened to many of my overseas orders before

It does? Sounds like you're getting all sorts of dodgy stuff sent to be getting that sort of attention.

  • Anyone know how well it works compared to the Blackvue models?

    • +1

Reviews consider this to be the best dashcam you can get

      • Any links to these reviews please?

I have heard this is better than Blackvue in terms of reliability and picture quality. Features are pretty good.

saw the picture and thought it was a projector :(

  • Anyone know of a good and well priced auto electrician located around Western Sydney?

    • +2

I asked Strathfield Car Radio a few days ago. They quoted $160 or $180 for the front and rear job (I forgot the exact number, had written it down at work).

      • Thanks for the response.
Did they mention whether or not they installed products purchased outside of their store? Some stores have a policy - Carboncarsystems at Blacktown only install products purchased from their store.

        • +1

The guy said to me that they were fine with installing stuff purchased outside their store. But you have to make a booking with them before going in for the install.

Just to be certain, I would suggest that you confirm with them when calling to make a booking. Perhaps different guy, different response.

  • So u just buy and put on comment "PLEASE REFUND 20% VAT" after?

    • I put on a comment and I also messaed the seller. He said he can refund the VAT after I confirm that it has arrived.

    • They refunded me on the same day it was delivered
