I Bought The Wrong Router or Maybe You Can Help

Our current router is Netgear Surfboard with a Motorola Modem
I bought a TP link D7 archer as I wanted better range, but when I tried to install TP Link the ADSL didnt work. I have now found out we don't have ADSL.
The company won't accept a return so am I stuck with a router I can't use?

If you have a solution please explain like I'm a 5 year old.
Thanks

  • Router scares me. I can deal with any computer problems be it hardware or software but I still can't figure out why my router doesn't work once in a while.

Sounds like you may have cable?

Instead of replacing your current router, what you will want to do is disable the WiFi from your current router, plug the D7 into it via ethernet, and use the D7 for Wifi (as Costanza linked above).

  • Plug in the Ethernet output of the Motorola modem to port 1 of the router (must be port 1), disable all ADSL functions on the D7, and your good to go. You miss out on 1 output port but it'll work.

You can also see if you can swap it for an Archer C7.

They also need to disable NAT on the existing modem router also unless I'm mistaken since the D7 should be the device handling that.

I think you have bought wireless modern router so u need to treat as modern. When you enter in modern setting you might need Id from network provider and password to set it. And at security area will need another password for wifi protection. And you will no longer need Motorola modern. Hope will help. Check YouTube video probably 1 will be there.

      Hi, Zonty. I don't mean to be the spelling police, but it's "m o d e m" not "m o d e r n".

    • If you cannot provide basic, meaningful and clear instructions, it would be best that you do not confuse the intended reader any further.

    Now your begging for it.

  • "I have now found out we don't have ADSL."

    So what Do you have?

  • In all honesty better off returning it and getting the router only version, it'd be cheaper. However, if you don't wanna do that or can't do that, follow the guide above that tells you how to put your modem into bridge mode would be the way to remedy this issue.

So to explain the situation simply, there are two things that the D7 archer has - a modem (which receives the internet signal) and a router (which shares the internet with other devices via cables or wifi). The modem part of your D7 archer won't work so you need to keep your existing modem to receive the internet signal. But the router part with the great wifi will still work. You just need to follow the instructions about to use the D7 as a router. It will involve connecting this to your existing modem and creating a wifi network. Good luck.

  • Google for instructions on how to put your surfboard modem into "bridge mode" so you can connect it to your TP Link.
