Xiaomi note 3 not updating

I recently got a note 3, and it's excellent!

Problem i have is that it keeps on prompting for a firmware update, but when i try and update it fails (downloads, cthen states 0% decrypting). I have tried a few times over the last week.

I updated the firmware to the latest version when the phone arrived.

Any suggestions how to get it to update? Do i need to get an mi account? Does it make a difference that i selected location as Taiwan? If i manually download the latest firmware version and use updater, will it wipe the phone?

  • Are you sure it has stock rom on it? With my redmi 3 it came with distributor rom that didn't want to update which I had to reflash it to stock on

    • Yes I updated it straight away when i got it.

  • Do i need to get an mi account?

    No

Does it make a difference that i selected location as Taiwan?

    Shouldn't

If i manually download the latest firmware version and use updater, will it wipe the phone?

No it won't. It uses the exact same process as OTA updates. Give this a try first, but probably you'll get the same result - except without the downloading bit, of course.

Could you tell us what supplier you bought from and what current ROM version you have?

    • Thanks for the info. Bought from aliexpress seller "xiaomi online store". It's a special edition, with currently "miui 8.1 stable 8.1.3.0 (mhrmidi)".I'm currently downloading, and will give it a try after backing up my important stuff.

    • +1

      Success! The website update installed.

It seems unusual that the ota update was about 500mb, while the website version was about 1.4gb. must be different process somehow i guess…

      • Yes the OTA update downloads only the parts it needs. The full download is the whole ROM again, which is why it is much larger.

Glad you had success. May be just a glitch in the last OTA update, so going forward go back to trying OTA updates

        • Will be interesting to see if i get the same issue next update.

  • I would recommend you to install lineage os ROM. It's much better than the stock ROM.
its a bit hard to install it, it will take you some time. but its feel smoother than the stock ROM. Also, it feels more like google ROM.

    • Only things I miss from my last phone are double tap to wake, and an apps folder. If it did that i may be tempted, but really happy with the phone as is for now.

    • how is the battery life with Lineage OS and also do you have any issues with fingerprint scanner?

      • I have redmi 3, so I can't comment on the fingerprint scanner. But the battery life is amazing. I can go 2 days with normal usage. Plus you can install pixel launcher and it will look like you are having google pixel.

The only problem I found the camera not really that great otherwise best rom available out there.
