That's what I tell myself to help me sleep at night.

But srs. I don't regret it!

        • No regrets. YOLO!!

I am out of annual leave and broke. Been to Japan, Indonesia, Hongkong and Seoul in the last year. Really want to go back to Japan XD~

Given the stuff in the news about North Korea, I don't know if now would be a good time to visit Seoul.

    • +5

Now would be the safest time to visit 'South Korea' considering all the US aircraft carriers cruising around the Korean Peninsula plus less amount of Chinese tourists in Seoul and Jeju as the Chinese government banned group tourists from visiting South Korea due to the THAAD conflict.

      • Plus on this. Although, it's a sad news for them losing Chinese customers, I actually had better experience on visiting Jeju few weeks ago as it was not crowded.

        • Hrm, yeah Chinese people make up a huuuge percentage of Jeju Island's tourism, I hope they are doing okay without them.

        • @Lunawinter: oh. Off to Jeju in a couple of hours. Minimal crowds sounds nice after a week in Seoul.

        • @glengyron:

Have an amazing time! It's a pretty chill place even when its "busy" so you should have a nice relaxing time there :)

      • I doubt anything would happen. But safest is not the right word for what you described "aircraft carriers cruising around", it's more like war zone or pre war zone. America's involvement in Iraq or Syria made it anything but safe anyway.

        • The US and other western countries would've pulled out their civilians from South Korea if there was a 1% chance of war taking place. Hence safest would be the best word to describe current situation in South Korea with the added military security for the country. You don't wanna mess with Trump if you were Kim Jung Eun right now.

I don't know if now would be a good time to visit Seoul.

It's Spring time… It's good for the Seoul.

  • Just come back from Seoul last month, give me cheap ticket to Japan or something -(

The price is extraordinary. But the catch is it does not include checked baggage. That's an extra $112 from AU (MEL) to KR. Base fare is $199 and $112 if you actually want to have luggage on the trip (as any person would). No deal.

Does anyone travel to another country with only hand luggage?

    • +6

Yes. When travelling with a partner only 1 of us takes checked luggage and split between 2 people.

      • The fee for luggage, one meal and seat selection is 56% of the overall air fare. That's not a bargain, it's price gouging while retaining a cheap clickbait headline to get people interested.

        • +3

I think most people care most about the final price.

Can you post a link to a cheaper deal that is all inclusive?

        • @maraco: The bargain headline should be edited to state that any luggage is extra, otherwise it's just clickbait.

        • +5

          @Cluster:

Yep went for four and half weeks with just a carry on duffle. No need to take the kitchen sink with you

        • +1

@Jacoby: AirBnB with washing machine provided is awesome

        • @maraco: Isn't it cheap even if you purchase the checked luggage?

    • +9

Does anyone travel to another country with only hand luggage?

Yes, regularly for over a decade. Trip to Japan next with Jetstar for 4 weeks with only carry-on. It's a way to get great travel deals. Plus travelling light can be much easier & you may be more adventurous - freed from your load😯

      • So you're the guy with 4 shopping bags who overfills the overhead compartment every time! ;)

        • +2

          Agh - hate those travellers.

No, small backpack (free in OzBargain deal) - 7kg carry-on. I did say I travel light - also tight. Am just an experienced budget traveller - up to 9 months a year overseas.

But have seen cartons of fruit, bulging shopping bags, etc being carried on on some AirAsia flights ;-(

Shopping bags are such an inconvenient & low class way to travel cheap. Look smart & you don't get hassles from staff at airports & fellow travellers will be grateful. Jetstar staff regularly give me free movies, drinks & meals. Don't think they'd be so nice if I was Mr ShoppingBags😯

I buy / find what I need when I arrive, give away what I don't want to bring back (making room for goodies). Adds a little to the adventure that is now lost in travel. But understandably not for everyone💼

In Osaka last April I gave away so much clothes & a sleeping bag to the homeless. Cheap accommodation (my basic hotel single room was $13/n!) used by budget travellers have a container for useful but not wanted things - so distributed some of that.

Brought back free new / almost new set of clothes & ditched my tired clothes.
Also free old Kiminos & Yukata from Tokyo trip - just wore onto flight over ordinary clothes. Got great response from fellow travellers & wonderful souvenirs.

Got to pack my bag for Japan next week - which won't take long😉

        • @Infidel: I gotta try that some time. Normally I pack a whole backpack of goodies just to entertain myself on the flight ;)

I wish airlines never had the idea to slash baggage from the ticket price though. Seems like most passengers try to carry the absolute maximum allowance (or more) and it makes boarding painful.

A neg to the deal? Mate even in the extreme scenario like you described $600 return all inclusive to SK is still cheap!

And who on earth needs so much baggage to SK? I travelled 3 weeks to hot Vietnam without extra luggage and many people do. A deal is a deal, if you could find cheaper & better deals then sure go ahead and neg these worse deals.

      • +1

I guess some people don't know how budget airlines work….they should just pay more to fly with full serviced airlines

    • +1

Went to Korea with Singapore Airlines a few months ago, was able to take 3 check in bags due to my FF status, I still only took carry on. Not everyone needs checked baggage.

    • I know plenty of people who travel for multiple weeks with only carry-on. There's even a subredit dedicated to it at https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/

  • Compared to some Air Asia deals, the total times on some of these aren't horrendous. 16 hours is still a lot longer than the ~10h of a direct flight, but there aren't many direct flights, and most competitors take similarly long.

(Unlike the Air Asia Japan deals, which take 3 times as long and aren't much cheaper than a Jetstar sale)

So, umm, what's good to do in SK?

    • +1

Personally I found it boring compared to Japan and SEA. Great food if you know what to order. Maybe watch live kpop?

      • +4

The train to Strathfield is a lot cheaper if there's only food and bad music to recommend!

      • Yeah Seoul's pretty boring imo. "Concrete Jungle" is the term that gets thrown around a lot when describing Seoul. I'd prefer Japan/China over it any day.

    • Eat, walk it off sightseeing, eat some more.

    • No direct flights from Melb to SK so this is very good.

    • +2

Eating, shopping, sight seeing. The shopping is fantastic especially if you are a woman. Amazingly cheap clothing, makeup and skincare that is very good quality. Food is delicious and cheap, they have very nice cafes as well.

Jeju Island is lovely, I highly recommend Jeju YEHA BUS tours, we did 2 out of their 3 tours and thoroughly enjoyed it.

For people into Kpop you can get tickets to a recording of a music show, check out all the big music company buildings etc.

Take a day trip to the North Korean border if that's your thing.

Visit one of the national parks, temples, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, see the traditional Hanok Village, get dressed in Korean national dress (Hanbok), watch the Cooking Nanta show (meant to be very good)

It's not somewhere you can spend an incredibly long time without getting bored unless you're happy to do a lot of shopping, walking and eating. I went for 8 days as part of a holiday to Japan and Korea and we went to Seoul, Busan and Jeju Island. I felt 8 days wasn't long enough for 3 places but it was a good taste. I'm quite interested in korean culture and Music so not everyone may feel this way. There is much more to do in Japan in comparison, but I'm still happy I went and would go again.

      • +1

Add to this list great museums (national museum, hangeul museum) and I've spent a week here, and look forward to spending one more when we get back from Jeju.

Admittedly travelling with kids we move at a slower pace, but there's a lot to see and it's increasingly accessible.

  • so cheap T_T
came back from Korea feb this year… my flight then was 1.2k… Q_Q

  • +1

You probably wouldn't want to go to Seoul in June. Summer over there can be horrid. April is much better if you can afford the time.

  • Anyone flown AirAsia? Any good?

    • It's a budget airline lol so can't be compared to Qantas and the like. You get what you pay for.

    • I flew to Thailand with them with a stopover in KL. Everything went smoothly. As long as you set realistic expectations you shouldn't have an issue. Just remember that everything costs extra.. everything.
