is the WIFI Router any good?

    • It's only a router, and not a modem as well right? Wait. .. i'm confusing myself …

      EDIT
      Wait… i unconfused myself.. it's not a modem.

    • I am using it right now..
yes it is not bad for the price I got it at 34 shipped.

Issue is, only two LAN port, not four!

Positives: Dual band, good antenna and USB port allow plug in USB to use as download agent :)
the thing will download for you :)

I've got one of the routers and am happy with it's performance, I don't however use it with the stock firmware, so your millage mat vary. It does only have 100Mb LAN and WAN ports, but this is not an issue for me as I use gigabit switches internally and this as an access point, my NBN maxes out a 100Mb anyway so this limitation is irrelevant in my use case. My favorite feature of the Padavan firmware is it's ability to route all traffic through my VPN.

Which firmware do you use with it and how difficult was it to flash it? Interested in one of these myself.

      • I'm running Padavan, flashed using Prometheus. It's not difficult but it's not straight forward, involving virtual machines and old dev versions of the original firmware. There are plenty of guides to follow but there is always the danger that you will brick the router.

    • My favorite feature of the Padavan firmware is it's ability to route all traffic through my VPN.

Does the stock firmware not do this?

      • Nope.

        • I'll elaborate on that with a 'not by default', there are apps that you can install apparently, which may be able to accomplish that, but I bought it with the intention of flashing the firmware, so didn't look into those options.

    • Description states: "Speed of Ethernet Port: 1000mbps"

  • Hello OP, Would Mijia 1080P IP camera work in Australia?

    • +1

yes, it like xiaofang, can work in Australia, but it's Chinese version.

  • so no gigabit port? whats the point of fast wifi then? If i plug this in my gigabit lan i only get 100Mbps to my nas.? what is the point of n or ac ?

    • It's a price versus features trade-off. Routers with Gigabit ports are more expensive.

With this router, there is a way you can get close to 300Mbps to your NAS - make the connection between this router and the NAS be wireless on 2.4GHz (up to 300Mbps), and then make everything else connect to the router on the 5GHz band (up to 867Mbps).

Even if you don't do that, this router still has an advantage over an N300 router. When you are in your back yard, a fair way from the router, you might get about 30Mbps from a 300Mbps router (1/10th of the speed). But with this router, you might get 86.7Mbps, nearly triple the speed. (but 5GHz doesn't penetrate walls as well as 2.4GHz does, so maybe the improvement will be smaller or non-existent. Placing the router next to a window can make a big improvement!)

I've also heard that AC routers perform better in congested situations with many devices connected, but I haven't tested that myself yet.

  • Any deal for mi notebook air 13 coming up soon?

    • no sir

  • The postage and handling from LighInTheBox is absolutely awful. it took over a week to even be shipped and now, a month later, still no sign of my order and no local tracking.
