Hi OzBargainers,

I was reading THIS recent OzBargain forum discussion on Tailgating and Hoon driving. I particularly liked Kangal's comment and it got me thinking; we need a deal on this bumper sticker.

Tailgating is becoming a huge issue in many Australian metropolitan areas and the consequences can be deadly. Good article from the NRMA entitled The dangers of tailgating Tailgating is a key factor to the most serious common crashes crashes on our roads.

Probably spending too much time looking at the speedo/rear view mirror and not paying attention to the front.

      • +6

what/whoever caused it, appears her own insurance wasn't good enough to fix the dent ;)

  • +3

Someone wise once said. "It does not matter who is right and who is wrong. When an accident happens, everyone lose."

If someone is slow in the right lane, it is annoying for you. Yes. Wait a while and overtake when safe. You dont lose anything.

    • +1

I agree with the sentiment, people need to relax more as the road congestion gets greater every year.

However, when you're waiting patiently for some slow driver in the right-hand lane - whom is either totally unaware of their surroundings, or just completely ignorant and selfish - then you are losing time, the most valuable resource you have.

      • +1

True, you do lose a bit of time.

Lets try to workout the cost. Example. say that the potential rager earns $200/hr

Lets say that it takes 2 min for him to overtake the alleged road hog. That costed him $6.66. The rager is a generous person, rounds it down to $6.50. The price of a starbucks coffee or maccas meal, he is buying everyone a safe journey. Consider it donation to charity. Non-tax deductable.

If this cost too much, they should be a politician and take helicopter rides on public money.

P.S. I am just taking the piss.

  • +1

Cool I'll buy this sticker and put it next to my Jim Beam sticker…

    • +4

Where will you fit it between your longhorn, southern cross and CFMEU stickers?

  • Great message for most commodore and falcon drivers. =]

  • +3

Seriously, there are way more idiots who drives on the right lane at least 10-20km below the speed limit than the idiots who drive like a mad. what gives them the right to slow down on the right lane when others are capable of reading signs and drive safely at the highest possible legal speed?

    • +3

      I presume it's their self-centered attitude?

  • +13

The solution to someone driving like an idiot isn't to also be an idiot. If you want to be a traffic cop then apply to join the police force.

If you want a sticker to discourage driving too close then a simple "If you can read this you're too close" does the job.

btw. If a cop sees you doing this, and especially if you have it on a sticker, expect to be pulled over and fined.

"Failing to show due care and consideration" and "intentionally causing an obstruction" are two traffic offences that can apply to this so a downvote from me.

    • +5

It's just a sticker man, relax.

      • +3

Where's a link to this sticker to put below the other one?

        • -1

Expect to be pulled over and fined?
          Really?

I'd love to see a cop try this one out with The Magi :).

        • +2

          @UFO: Yes.

The police have a rather low tolerance for people being dicks on the road and "but they were a dick first" doesn't cut it. Google it as I think you'll be surprised.

      • +5

Strange. That's what I'd say to those people getting their panties in a twist over some idiot driving too close.

    • +1

Yep, relax + sorry to be a spoil sport, but this isn't a valid neg. see guidelines HERE

      • +2

I thought it better to vote negative than to report it as illegal/inappropriate. It encourages a dangerous and stupid behaviour on the roads as well as a rather dumb mindset. I know many won't agree but that's life.

As I said the job of a driver isn't to police other drivers.
If someone is following way too close your only remedy is to pull over and let them pass.
It's not to brake check and it's not to slow down thinking you can annoy them into driving like a decent person. If you don't like that then you'll have to change the law (and I'd actually support something like rear-view camera footage being acceptable evidence for the police). I hate tailgaters and am an extremely courteous and patient driver (I'll stop and wait for cars in a carpark to reverse out even if I'm leaving because it's safer for them being able to see a stopped car) but this isn't how we fix that problem.

Technically it could probably also come under "Major issue with product in that it doesn't work the way it should" as it sure as hell won't encourage the tailgater to drive better.

And no you're not being a spoilsport just trying to do the right thing.

    • "I don't like this product" is not a valid reason to neg.

  • +1

I can just picture an ice head behind me reading this sticker without an ounce of road rage going through his mind.

  • +1

Never anger the iced up dope fiends that tailgate people - they are prone to murderous rage with no regard for consequences.

Tailgaters don't care if people die or if they go to jail, the speed limit is whatever they say it is.

  • So need this sticker for all those semis that sit on your bum on the Pacific Highway.

    • +2

i'd love to know why some truckies think it's fine to tailgate but will fly into a raging sook when they perceive a car has cut them off?

      • +1

I get it that they are under pressure to deliver their load in a timely fashion. But some are very intolerant and either blind you with their lights and/or drive dangerously close. I always pull over the moment that I can.

  • +1

Is it legal to shoot tailgaters? Self defence?

  • +1

Absolutely need this for most of the douche drivers in melbourne….Never follow the speed limits and tailgate the ones who do.

  • looks like we got an angry commodore driver in the house.

  • I'm sure every Audi owner would love this bogantastic sticker on their window.

  • +2

A must have for Prius owners

  • +5

Slowing down when someone is tailgating is the only safe strategy when it's not practical to allow them to pass. It's taught in defensive driving courses.

It sucks that so many people make light of it. The pricks who tailgate risk not only their own lives but those of the people in front.

People are not capable of driving these death machines safely. We've proved that. It's time to give the machines a crack at it, they can't be any worse.

    • +2

That's the problem with driver training in this country. It's "well that seems like a good idea" and not "this is best practice". That may be best practice, but we really don't know. Here's NRMA's take on it and they say don't slow down (though their reason isn't appropriate imo)

      https://www.mynrma.com.au/blog/tag/safe-driving/

The penalty for tailgating is a $433 fine and 3 demerit points. If you are being tailgated by an aggressive driver, do not allow them to indirectly control your speed or observation through intimidation. Get out of their way by pulling over or turning left. Avoid slowing or flashing your brake lights, as this may escalate the situation to road rage. You can report the driver to police or the business to which the vehicle belongs.

  • +3

I'm negging this deal because we don't need any more aggression on the road - including this sort of passive (though bordering on antagonistic) aggression.

    • -1

Sorry to be a spoil sport, but this isn't a valid neg. see HERE

      • +5

Don't be sorry. Just click the REPORT button and carry-on OzBargaining.

    • +7

No it isn't if you have other vehicles around. If you're driving 20km/h slower than everyone else you're creating a hazard.
All it takes is one distracted driver to smash into you and who cares if they're at fault, when your car is smashed and your neck buggered it could've been avoided if you didn't create the hazard to begin with.

    • +4

Time to listen to your friends and family and hand your licence back ;)

    • +3

driving 20-30km/h under the speed limit without legitimate reason is not safe and its not legal.

    • +1

Try sitting even 10km/hr below the speed limit during your driving test for an extended period and you WILL fail.

      • What? The reasonable band is between [limit - 10km/hr] to the limit. I drove in the lower range on my driving test and passed fine with no comment from the examiner. But I stuck to the left lane unless told to lane change.

Greater than 10km/hr under is when it starts to become insensitive to other drivers.

    • +1

Ppl that drive 80 in 100 zone cause havoc on the infrastructure. This is one reason why number of on/off ramps have to be limited.. Locals end up using major highway to get milk for breakfast.. They don't bother speeding up because they are only on the highway til next exit.. Which causes merger issues and jams.. This might be why m1 Gold Coast can be pretty bad.

    • Depends entirely on the conditions

    • +3

You're probably the type of driver that induces road rage in others thinking its perfectly ok to be roadhogging. This sort of reasoning is why some drivers lose it and beat the crap out of others. I don't condone the behavior but I can understand why. Roadhoggers and self-righteous cyclists are the 2 most hater types on the road.

    • Could somebody link me to the legislation that says only 10km/h under is reasonable?

  • +2

rawm wins controversial post of the month I think ;)

    • -1

Not the plan, but happy to have people simultaneously grabbing a good deal and discussing this hot topic.

      • +1

Why would someone vote that comment down?

  • I want a sticker that says, "If you can read this, I will give you a free brake test."

  • +5

I have NEVER had a problem with tailgaters. When I'm in a relaxed mood and I see faster cars, I simply filter left and give way. I don't see any problems with that. People that have to resort to a sticker like this probably aren't very good drivers in the first place, no offense.

What's so hard about giving way to a faster car or sticking to the left lane if you're a bloody slow driver? Neither behaviors will create roadrage but thumbs up and appreciation from fellow drivers instead.

    • And if you're doing the exact speed limit and you're already in the left lane and being tailgated?

      • +3

Faster cars tends to lose patience and will filter out and overtake when they can. No dramas there.

        • +2

+100 to Clubhonda. If we're coming up quick in the left lane, it's likely to get around someone who is in the right lane when they shouldn't be.

    • +3

Any driver who is in the overtaking lane and not overtaking, or has no legal reason to be there, is an inconsiderate law breaking road hazard.

Drivers who consider they have a need for this sticker, most likely need to take a closer look at their own driving habits.

I have been a regular driver for 50 years. In that time I have not incurred any traffic infringement nor been involved in any accident.

Wisdom garnered from those years of driving would suggest to me, that a bumper sticker stating..'The Closer You Get The Slower I Drive,' should be replaced with a sticker..

'KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING'. Chances are, if you abide by this sticker, you will dramatically reduce occurrences of tailgating.

  • +5
    1. This is not a bargain.
    2. You are asking to be overtaken and cut off/brake tested
  • Now I just need one for the front that reads… "We have Keep Left Unless Overtaking laws in this country too!"

  • +2

Both behaviours are bad but sometimes people are just wicked and brutal on the Motorways
On 2 occasions I've had someone smash their blakes for no reason just for act of wickedness and each of those times, I was not tailgating, just changed to right lane and was approaching at 100km/h, was about 5 seconds away and this driver just smashed his breaks and I think he was doing about 80 - 85km/h.
Good thing I was maintaining a safe distance. When I looked at the back of this car, it was all smashed.
Guess they are looking for someone to fix their car and the annoying thing is, they thought it was fun and funny because when I drove past them, both the driver and the passenger were laughing looking at me and was still on the right lane doing 80km/s.
I believe in teaching by example, am sure they know all about not travelling below 10km/h of the posted speed limit and am sure they know all about keep left unless overtaking and to look after your fellow road users in a way that will not endanger someone's life.
So I drove past and gave them about 500m ahead and when they saw no car was coming behind them that they could do the same thing to, they now decided to speed up and it's always predictable that they will be travelling over th limit when they decide to speed up.

I waited, waited, waited, he was approaching and got closer and I smashed my breaks, and he nearly fell off the kerb because of his speed and the swivel.
This one driver pulled over, I think he might have been in a very deep shock, the other one lost all the smiles/laugh and decided to follow behind me with his high beams on
The beams didn't border me because I was in an SUV and had auto dimmers and it was daylight also.
I obviously calculated it and did it in such a way that no one will get hurt and there was no other cars around.

My point being, sometimes just give someone a taste of their own medicine and they will learn instead of relying on them to be humans and use their initiative. Some people might think otherwise but I can guaranty I cured that behaviour in these drivers because they are bullies that prey on the weak but like all bullies, if you stand up to them, they will stop.

This both incidents happened in QLD Pacific Motorway leading up to Brisbane around Logan and Springwood

  • Nine times out of ten, these stickers are going to be affixed to a underpowered ecoboxes that should never be in the right lane to begin with (unless turning).

All those who are with me might want to pick up one of these stickers instead: http://www.streetfx.com.au/product/move-over-reversed-front-…

    • +2

HAHA Agreed, my comment is about the same as yours.

  • +3

If you have this sticker, or want to buy it. Please stay out of the right lane on motorways… It's usually the most inconsiderate, least courteous drivers who have this sticker. People don't ride your ass for no reason 99% of the time, that 1%, sure, but pullover if they are too close, and report them. Get a dashcam.

  • +3

This sort of attitude should not be encouraged. Neg.

    • -3

Seriously? Is this OzMorals? Can't neg vote based on 'attitude'.
Save your holy red and white box for something special my friend.

      • +6

It's a rubbish product promoting illegal activity, neg.

      • +1

I love the saltiness from this guy. It's hilarious.

  • +3

People that drive 10-20kms under the speed limit in the right lane….

    • +2

In b4 salty reply from an upset op about he/she deems your neg to not be valid.

  • +2

Slowing down and adding further aggravation and frustration to the situation may make you worse than the tailgater. I've seen some very dangerous overtaking caused by such an action - further endangering lives. Furthermore, you may frustrate someone who was not originally tailgating, but got stuck somewhere in the line of traffic stuck behind you - more people to do something silly. If you are doing very close to the limit, stay that way and they will pass eventually. If you are doing 10km/h or more under the limit, perhaps pullover or move to the left when it is safe to do so and let them pass. Do NOT slow down deliberately.

    • can i also add: do not purposely slow down suddenly i.e. brake-checking

      • +1

One of the guys I work with (not the smartest or ethical person) connected a switch disabling his brake lights, and according to his cool story: he brake checked an undercover police car without brake lights, got pulled over for it, but got away because he manage to flick the switch in time.

  • +2

Road rage is no joke and anyone displaying this sticker is just inviting it.

  • Did..did.did Ozbargainers just spend $1.50 on a sticker?

    • +1

No way! Hopefully they used the Cashrewards link and the total cost would be $1.3857 ;)
