Isn't Persian and Iranian the same thing?

    • +2

      Yes it is

    • +2

Yes it is. Some know Persian, some know Iranian. Both are the same

        • @Kangal: why the downvotes?

        • Assyrians are Iraqi.

        • @zenex2:
Not at all. Assyrians are neither Iraqi nor Iranian. Though most live in Iran, they don't identify as Iranian. Mostly a religious thing.

But some do identify as Persians.

Thanks OP, just bought some, let's see the quality when it arrives. Free shipping is a good deal too!

    • Thank you. Much appreciated.

Coles & Woolies sell 0.1 gram for $14!!! That's robbery if you sell a whole gram less than that.

    • Have a plus-vote.

    • +1

Perhaps they misunderstood it as cocaine.

      • +1

Friend, cocain is actually cheaper than the coles please ice per gram (about $90/ gram from a quick search)

        • Lol so not true.

Cocaine is $300 a gram or $250 for rubbish

A friend of a friend of mine if you have to ask….

      the man can do maths

    • Whats amazing is the farmers who they farm the actual saffron they get paid about $0.5 or 50 cents for a gram. And the actual thing is being sold for $0.75/gram in irans bazaars.
Woolworths must buy the same saffron for max 30-40cents per gram and they resell it for $140$/gram. Which means they make 40000% profit.

      • They always mark up specialty items. Carolina Reaper chillies are $400/kg in Coles. If you can find a grocer who sells them they're like $10/kg.

    • +24

Thanks for the comment. This is "Pushal"saffron. Pushal is grade 4 saffron which is the lowest grade saffron according to the international rating of saffron. Our saffron is Grade-1 "Sargol" saffron, which is only the best bit of the saffron thread (the red part).

        • Hint: stop digging

  • +3

Vendor in title please. Perhaps …

    Persian Saffron - Grade 1 all red 1g $7.99, 9g $59 free shipping @ Saffron Store

… although I cannot see a 9g pack by clicking on Go to Deal, which shows the 1g pack at $7.59 but the product page says $7.99.

    • +12

Thanks for the comment. Did you buy in Iran and shipped to Australia?

    • +18

We are not in Iran. Just saying

    • +1

They are offering prices that greatly undercut Coles. Not like you can expect them to manage imports and sell without some margin.

There are strict rules for food standards in Australia. OP even said it had undergone lab testing locally.

    • +4

Can you post the deal please?

    • +3

      That expensive?
Wow, the Saffron-store is very good with the pricing then, given all the background work, import, insurances, all paperwork,…
Must be on very lean margin and very effective operations! Importing food to Australia is not cheap and easy process.
      Thanks Rep!

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Safranfaden-1-gr-1-kg-Safran-Sar-… Seems to be best grade and iso.

I was ripped off in Iran, paid Au$10 for 4.6 grams.

  • +2

Anyone remember how much Costco sells saffron for? Also how does this compare with http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/331907393791

Edit: They also have an eBay store http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/saffron_store/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs… if you have any coupons.

    • +2

I think I've paid $21 for the one at Costco. Not that I remember the weight so that probably doesn't help. Much bigger size than Coles/Woolies and better value.

I did buy from the Saffron store last year because price was better than Costco. Also I have to say that Costco had a fair few golden/yellow threads which i believe is lower quality. Surprising as Kirklands products are usually very good! The saffron i received from the store above was bright vibrant red

    Care to explain?

    • +10

Thanks for the comment. Yes, we had a massive sale for our new season's arrivals. Saffron harvest is in November each year and after lab testing, packaging and shipping, it gets to us by February each year. We do have 3-4 sales throughout the year every year.

Today was for our new package introduction and the Heart shaped is discounted. Other products have their regular price which is still much cheaper than any other supermarket or website offering the quality of the saffron we are offering.

Hope you purchase it and enjoy it :)

      • +3

Why the negative vote for Savas?

        • +13

Thanks for the comment. It's not a factory to have a set date every year. It's a farm. Some Flowers's grow in Oct, some floweres grow in Dec. "around" November is when the harvest happenes.
I feel like I'm answering primary school questions sometimes. No offense and please don't take it on yourself, but the type of comments you see here in ozbargain indicates the learning curve we as saffron providers should fill in the community.

There are some websites and Wikipedia I can refer and that's what I did when I first stsrted selling saffron. I read a few books and websites. I wasn't a saffron seller. I'm an engineer. I just loved saffron and knew we could bring premium saffron here with much less of a price tag. That dream took 3 years of research and negotiation but we did it.

Hope I answered your query. Thank you.

        • -1

@Saffron-Store: I learn something new every day. February is "around" November in Iran …

          https://saffronstore.com.au/shop/premium-saffron/saffron-sto…

          … I really didn't know. But $7.99 is a price increase compared with last month's $7.59.

        • -2

          @Saffron-Store:

I feel like I'm answering primary school questions sometimes.

New packaging is not new product. Until Moderator hamza23 kindly amended it your title announced "New Product Sale!" and omitted vendor name in your 22nd post as Store Rep. It did not declare "Price Increase!".

        • +1

Do agree on this point… From what I have read in most saffron picking occurs in October. I guess seasonal variations happens if the weather is too hot or cold etc.

        • +2

@Saffron-Store: Dont worry about all these people who think they are detectives. Dont let their mean spirit deter you from here.

        • +1

@MelbBargainChaser77: Pretty sure they are stating fact now. Unless it is actually picked in November then it shouldn't reference the month.

Should use rice terminology. Crop Year 2016 doesn't need the month you just know it was planted in 2016.

        • +5

If you take those months as numbers (with February being 14 to account for it being the following year) you get 10, 12, 14, 10, 10, 10, 12, 12 which averages to 11.25. Which is November.

        • @morini: Would take the outliers out or use the median. You wouldn't want the outliers influencing the average due to being one of them.

        • @PJC:

You are the cleverest year 5 Student I've ever met.

        • -1

          @DnA-bargain: Thank you!

        • @jlogic: People are too quick to remove outliers. They should be treated as valid data unless you have reason to think they are not. There is only one 'outlier', the February, and taking that out it still averages to 10.8, or late October.

I've heard horror stories from 2 people who work in food manufacturing with similar stories.

If you've got some data on the cleanliness of products from different vendors, please share it. Otherwise, you're simply using a shotgun approach which adds no value.

      • Naw, not sPit… you've got the wrong consonant…

And it's not a random act of revenge by a few twits. It's their "cultural" practice. i.e. Done blanket fashion, by the vast majority. (Only just learned about it today.)

        • -1

Oh, then you're clearly an authority on the matter then.

        • @callum9999: Learning for the first time something is true, doesn't make it false. Going by your logic, someone that hears for the first time they're supposed to put oil in their car engine… means they're an idiot for getting an oil change.

        • -1

          @GregMonarch: Except I said no such thing…

If you love logic so much, perhaps you can come up with a logical explanation as to why millions of people have such an obsession with cleanliness that they go to the trouble to make a makeshift bidet (indeed, as he name suggests it's also a western thing…) instead of using toilet paper yet don't wash their hands?

        • @callum9999: Um… You certainly did imply that with the scarcasm:

"Only just learned about it today."
"Oh, then you're clearly an authority on the matter"

Not sure what you're saying with the bidet bit. But if you're implying the two methods are the same thing - hardly. From everything I've read (including from their own sources they use water and their left hand. A bidet does not emulate that disgusting practice. i.e. Washing with your hand, water only, no soap afterwards, then handling food. Bidets use a jet of water and you still wash your hands afterwards with soap in a hand basin. On the other hand, the cultural practice as now seen on the streets of Paris, is to ignore the public toilets available, and instead empty their bowels in a public fountain, wash their anus using that water, then drink from the same hand immediately afterwards. There's video of this online. (As for the ludicrous reason why this practice is done, the mind boggles.)

I've always been impressed at your great prices and how open and responsive you are when people ask questions or have issues - so I've just bought a 1g pack. Thanks OP :)

    • +2

Thank you very much for the comment. You just made my day! Enjoy the saffron :)

  • +1

This is a very interesting post.
Not sure if its a bargain, but Im buying anyway as price is not too exorbitant.
Cant wait to try some recipes.

The last saffron I bought was in Kashmir a long time ago, cant remember what I cooked but do remember it was special.

    • Looking forward to your order and hope we satisfy your saffron needs.

  • +1

I can confirm that Sargol Saffron sold by this store is a quality saffron brand.

    • Thank you for the kind words :)

  • This is a good deal - not too sure about the 2-3 monthly readvertising on Ozbargain though

  • +2

What exactly am I agreeing to here?
    https://saffronstore.com.au/terms-conditions/

  • +2

Plus-voting because I'm confident your price is unlikely to be beaten.

That was incorrect. I have requested Mods delete it and I revoked my plus-vote. Member Savas correctly remarked this is a price increase, which Store Rep OP already obscured by …

We are fixing the website now.

amending the displayed price. The price for 1 gram in today's post is definitely a price increase and OP's explanation https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4574194/redir is inaccurate and spurious. That "fixed' website shows no product harvested in November https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4574725/redir.

    Furthermore OP's assertion of …

much cheaper than any other supermarket or website

… was disproved by Member scozbargain. For example …

    https://saffronstore.com.au/shop/premium-saffron/premium-bul…
    $169.90
    https://saffronstore.com.au/shop/premium-saffron/premium-bul…
    $126.17 - 5% code CAU5 = $119.86 + Postage $4.07 = $123.93 … a significantt saving.

We come here for bargains. We don't come here to be told price increases are good for us.

    • +3

PJC these website are our own pages. You are comparing our prices agianst our own prices?
I'd be happy to help you if I could understand your query.

    • +3

I don't know why you are comparing the price to the old price? The post is comparing the price to what we would of paid at Colesworths.

A bargain is a bargain, especially for those that don't know about this store.

    • +2

Agreed, this price is average compared to the other eBay sellers plus OP put their price up days before posting on OzBargain to readvertise. Yet all of a sudden everyone is saffron experts and believes the ambiguous OP.

      • +1
