Portrait Monitor Recommendations

Im looking for a portrait monitor, i was originally after a cheap ultrawide 29" but none of the ones i could find have the option of flipping the screen 90 degrees. Does anyone know of such a beast? There's more expensive options but im not after a gsync or 144hz, just a cheap screen for content whilst gaming on my main 32" 4k monitor.
I would consider a traditional widescreen if the price was right.
I guess another option is getting a vesa mount and removing the non tilting stand from the cheap ultrawide but seems like a bit of work and will up the price somewhat but if someone knows of a reasonable 75cm vesa stand im open to that too.

  • I have a cheap second monitor on my PC - the main screen is in landscape mode and the secondary screen is in portrait mode. I find it greatly helps with productivity.

You don't need hardware support for portrait mode - as long as you have two video ports on your PC, Windows will let you configure it in any orientation you like. Of course, the built-in mount/stand probably won't allow the monitor to rotate, but that can be fixed with a cheap vesa mount from eBay. I know that some Samsung monitors do have rotatable mounts.

The only trouble I have is that my cheap second screen is only 1440 x 900 pixels, and most web sites (including OzBargain) don't like a screen that's only 900 pixels wide - important elements on the right are off-screen and you need to scroll to use them. You should try for at least full HD resolution of 1080 pixels.

So, get yourself a second monitor, but make sure it has enough pixels!

You might like to also have a look at software like DisplayFusion, which lets you (amongst other things) configure programs to open in a particular screen, easily swap windows between monitors, and has many task bar options that Windows itself doesn't offer.

  • A lot of Dell business-grade ultrasharps have stands that support pivot.

BenQ also has a great pivoting monitor: BenQ BL2405HT, and it's a little pricey at $250.

Pivoting monitors are more expensive than ones that do not, but worth that extra coin.

You CAN also get a stand and sort of jerry rig your own portrait VESA setup, but it won't be as simple or elegant as buying a monitor that already does portrait on it's own. They cost around $40~50 for a good one.
