This is perfect timing for those that received the Velcity Explore Gold 3 month challenge from Flybuys. Earn 80 status credits in 3 months and keep Gold for a year. If you are a big spender anyway at Coles this is an easy extra 10 status credits which is the same as you would earn on the cheapest SYD-MEL 'getaway' return flight.

    • Noob question, can you please explain more?

      • +1

Flybuys sent out an offer to a range of Velocity members a few weeks back offering them 3 months of free Gold Velocity Membership. This includes a challenge to earn 80 status credits in the 3 months and you get to keep gold for a further 12 months. You can usually only earn a maximum of 10 status credits per month via shopping at Coles/Liquorland/First Choice (need to spend a total of $1000 per month in any number of transactions). But with this offer you can earn a total of 20 for the same $1000 spend.

Virgin award status credits based on the distance of your flight (<750 miles, 750-1500 miles & >1500 miles)and the type of fare you purchased. The cheapest and most restrictive economy 'Getaway fare' would get you 5 status credits on a single SYD-MEL sector but if you paid more for an 'elevate' fare you would earn 15 status credits and a 'Freedom' fare would net you 25 status credits.

If you never received the 3 month offer or don't fly with Virgin regularly enough to get close to silver or gold then it is really of no value.

  • do we have to spend $100, or is it like cumalative. ie $40+$40+$20 = $100?

    • +1

Op said across multiple transactions, so yes?

      • +1

yes doesn't need to be per $100 transactions, at the end of the month, they add up all the spending and you get your points onto your velocity account usually the first day of the following month.

  • this is going to be a dumb question, ive read about the program and status credits

but if you dont fly that much , then the status credits arent worth it are they? the benefits dont seem to be thta great,

I have woolworths and flybuys points to accumulate,

however the status credits dont seem to be worth it

    what am I misisng?

    • +3

yes, the status credit doesnt help unless you fly and get an eligible sector then your status changes from Bronze to Silver to Gold etc..

      • fair enough, i dont fly at all for work, but I hear a lot of talk about velocity status but not about qantas status so I assumed maybe velocity was better or had advantages

    • +2

You're missing that this is a two dimensional 'activity'. One dimension is the straightforward frequent flyer points you get.

The status credits are a way of keeping track of how valuable you are to the airline in a way that's transparent to you (and to encourage you to fly more).

So in this instance, if you fly occasionally then you can use the status credits earned from flying combined with spend at Coles to qualify for Silver. This gives you a few minor advantages.

However when you fly regularly (and want to requalify) then Gold at VA gives you a number of advantages - the simplest/largest one being access to the lounges and the priority checkins without flying business class. There are other advantages such as earning a bonus on your FF points earning.

At the top level (for frequent flyers anyway) Platinum gives you a bunch more advantages.

So you're right, if you don't fly much then really credits have no use to you at all and you should ignore them when deciding where you want to spend and who you want to fly with.

  • During the promotional period, the nominated linked Velocity member may earn up to a maximum of 20 Velocity Frequent Flyer Status Credits.

    $100 equals 2 Velocity Credits and a maximum of 20 Velocity Credits. That's $2,000.

    • +3

      …$1000, isn't it?

      • $1000, isn't it?

Mea culpa. Me brain ain't with me today.

        • Mine neither. But looks like it'll math okay every now and then.

      • I think it's $50?? 100/2?

        can someone confirm?

        • +1

          Nope, $1000.

          2 VP = $100
          Therefore 20 VP = $1000

  • +2

Don't confuse Velocity Points with Status Credits

This is a promotion for double SC not double VP.

SC is worthless unless you are chasing at least a Silver status.

If you're just collecting points for future flights redemption, this promotion is not much of a value. The conversion of 2000 flybuys points to 870 Velocity points doesn't double.

As mentioned earlier this is a good way for those who are close to obtaining or maintaining their desired status (and associated benefits) to top up SC without actually flying. Like those who have been offered Explore Gold reduced SC requirements to maintain Gold for another year.

  • Has anyone received their double status credits yet for the month of April? Does anyone know if this will show separately in your Velocity account? I was expecting a total of 14SC and only received 6SC. I am 8SC off Velocity Gold from the Flybuys Fast Track promotion so want to make sure I get them in time.

    • Mine came through to my Velocity account a couple of days ago. Spent $980 over the month and received 18 status credits (kicking myself I never spent an extra $20 to get 2 more status credits).

I've just booked flights SYD-BNE-CNS-BNE-SYD for $360 all up as an 'elevate' fare to get another 70 credits and give me gold for another 12 months. I travel with Virgin and their partners a lot so is worthwhile for me.

  • Yes received it, got 14sc appeared as normal, remember it's only on coles and liquor land no coles express so you need to have spend $700 to get 14sc
